The Necessity of Diagnostic Imaging and its Lacking Availability
No full textThe World Health Organization (WHO) states that 50-75% of people across the globe do not have adequate access to basic diagnostic imaging such as ultrasound and X-ray. Studies have shown that ultrasound and X-ray can address 80-90% of imaging needs in developing countries. A proper understanding of what access to diagnostic imaging means is important to provide equitable and effective solutions. It is not enough to be geographically located near a hospital that has diagnostic imaging, but the imaging must also address the local need, be affordable to the country, and be scientifically valid. No matter the location, whether it be in developed or developing countries, access to diagnostic imaging is a necessity and a problem that needs a solution. Potential solutions exist such as the WHO’s technical review titled “The Needs Assessment for Medical Devices” which demonstrates how to calculate gaps in access to medical technologies specifically by cataloguing what type of diagnostic imaging is available and what should be available. Other solutions include non-profit organizations, such as “RAD-AID”, which are working towards increasing radiology services in developing countries. Finally, donating diagnostic imaging devices is another potential solution to address the need for this technology in places that lack it. However, there are many important factors to consider before making a donation. Overall, diagnostic imaging, such as X-ray and ultrasound, have an important role in patient care and are needed in countries that cannot access any other imaging modalities

La destrucción del idilio familiar en La tía Tula de Unamuno y Familia de Ba Jin, un estudio comparatista
No full textBoth in Hispanic and Chinese philology we usually understand the term idyll as a composition, of pastoral and bucolic character. However, from an aesthetic point of view, it has a more complex meaning, as explained by the Russian thinker Mikhail Bakhtin. Following the interpretation of the idyll by Bakhtin and Beltrán Almería, we will observe the destruction of the family idyll in Modernity from two works by Miguel de Unamuno and Ba Jin, Aunt Tula and Family. Both have had great resonance in Hispanic and Chinese literature, respectively. Their authors occupy places of honor in modern Spanish and Chinese literatures. Literary research on Ba Jin is not developed in Spain. Likewise, Unamuno's novels have not yet received the attention they deserve to have in China. This study aims to approach the common aesthetics (the destruction of the idyll) that founds both novels.Tanto en la filología hispánica y como en la china solemos comprender el término idilio como composición, de carácter pastoril y bucólico. No obstante, desde un punto de vista estético, tiene un sentido más complejo, como explicara el pensador ruso Mijaíl Bajtín. Siguiendo la interpretación del idilio de Bajtín y de Beltrán Almería, observaremos la destrucción del idilio familiar en la Modernidad a partir de dos obras de Miguel de Unamuno y Ba Jin, La tía Tula yFamilia. Ambas han tenido gran resonancia en la literatura hispánica y china, respectivamente. Sus autores ocupan puestos de honor en las literaturas modernas española y china. La investigación literaria sobre Ba Jin no está desarrollada en España. Igualmente, las novelas de Unamuno aún no han recibido la atención que merecen tener en China. Este estudio pretende aproximarse a la estética común (la destrucción del idilio) que funda ambas novelas.
 
Shanghai, A Haven for Refugees: German and Austrian refugees in Shanghai, 1938-1945
No full textThis paper examines the Jewish refugees who fled to Shanghai from Nazis persecution between late 1938 and early 1940. The refugees experience in Shanghai is an underdeveloped topic in Holocaust historiography. This research uses primary and secondary sources and organizes the refugees’ experiences (the history) according to chronology. This is a significant topic because it shows that the Holocaust was not just a European story but an international event that impacted Jewish refugees in Shanghai
Difference equation satisfied by the Stieltjes transform of a sequence
No full textWe study a class of generating functions related to the Stieltjes transform of a sequence of moments with respect to the basis of falling factorial polynomials. Given a recurrence relation for the coefficient sequence, it is shown how to compute the difference equation satisified by its generating function w.r.t. this basis. We give several examples from the class of discrete semiclassical orthogonal polynomials
“How about Asylum Seekers who are Homeless?” The Racialised Logics Behind State Designed Strategies of Containment and Control During Covid-19 and Anti-Racist Alternatives: A Glasgow Case Study
No full textThis paper asks two questions: How has the Covid-19 pandemic been experienced by people seeking asylum who are subjected to United Kingdom (UK) State designed-in destitution? And what might be the alternatives to State produced destitution? To answer these questions, we draw on two case studies from Glasgow, a city unique in the UK for its long history of asylum dispersal and its deeply embedded ecology of third-sector support and asylum advocacy work. We argue that to understand the segregatory power of dispersal and tiered welfare provision as forms of violent migration governance, centring the racialised logics at play is imperative. This provides the framework for developing anti-racist approaches to supporting people made homeless through destitution by design. Using case studies, we explore how the UK Government’s use of ‘emergency hotel accommodation’ for people seeking asylum who are already homeless or are at risk of homelessness, are becoming normalised strategies of containment for racialised others and an extension of the distributed violence of dispersal accommodation that long pre-dates the pandemic. We offer an alternative advocacy-led and rights-based approach to secure refuge for people made homeless by the State

No full textRecent studies of the reception and collection of pre-Revolutionary art in nineteenth-century France have centered on real-life historical examples and individuals such as the celebrated collector Louis La Caze. But what can the destiny of a fictional art collection tell us about the metamorphoses of the mid-nineteenth-century Parisian art market and the very essence and nature of collecting? Honoré de Balzac was an author with his own pretensions to be a great collector and this essay focuses on the complex and often contradictory representation of the art collection in Le Cousin Pons (1847)—one of the last works of La Comédie humaine to be published before the novelist’s death in August 1850.Recent studies of the reception and collection of pre-Revolutionary art in nineteenth-century France have centered on real-life historical examples and individuals such as the celebrated collector Louis La Caze. Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion on Canadian Universities: Where do International Students Fit in?
No full textThis article examines how international students are, or are not, included in the equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) activities at two of Canada’s largest English-speaking universities: the University of Toronto and the University of British Columbia. Our findings point to notable similarities: first, while international students at both institutions are celebrated for their contributions to campus diversity, there are also concerns over the increasing proportion of international students from China. Secondly, we find that understandings of EDI seem derived from legal definitions of discrimination. We argue that international students are largely overlooked in existing organizational structures for EDI, and definitions and initiatives related to EDI should better reflect encompassing definitions of inclusion and equity that take into account the needs and experiences of international students
Liberty and Suspension in Locke’s Essay
No full textI argue for two controversial claims about Locke’s account of liberty in Essay 2.21. The first claim is that Locke does not identify liberty with freedom of action. Instead, Locke places further conditions on liberty beyond to the power to perform or forbear an action at will. The second (and closely related) claim is that Locke takes the power to suspend and examine desire to be necessary for liberty—in other words, that possession of the power to suspend and examine desire is one such further condition upon liberty
