How Are They Doing? University Outcomes of International Students Studying in Canada
Globally, over the past few decades, there has been a considerable increase in research on the host country experiences of international students. This is not the case for examinations of university outcomes. As a result, in this article, as a first step, comparisons are made between the academic achievement (GPA), satisfaction, and intent of international students to return to their university as compared to Canadian domestic students at three points in time. First, I show that over several decades there has been little difference in the outcomes of international and domestic students. Second, based on cluster analysis and analyses of covariance, outcomes of contemporary students, as embodied in an “‘adjustment index,”’ are compared and
dissected. This procedure shows that while international students suffer from an overall disadvantage in adjustment, there is considerable within group difference. Overall, while there is much room for improvement, the outcomes of international students are hopeful
Blistered Morale: Poison Gas and Troop Morale During and After The Great War
Poison gas was utilized during the First World War as an irritant more than as a deadly weapon, but gas had a large impact on the lives of the soldiers that it affected. When chlorine gas was first infamously used against the Allied forces during the Battle of Second Ypres, it immediately became known as a shocking weapon and horror stories were quickly circulated. Although poison gas was not one of the main casualty-causing arms during the war, it caused long-lasting and painful wounds, exhaustion due to constant vigilance, and psychological trauma
Chosen, Taken, and Returned: Korean “Comfort Women” and the Struggle against Japanese Colonial and Post-Colonial Legacies
The existence of the “comfort women” continues to create social and political controversy as survivors, former colonies, and the Japanese government struggle to align for their own end goals for redress and reconciliation. The question of responsibility and who is to blame range on a variety of accusations that are highly dependent on cultural perspective and public rhetoric. Since the first “comfort women” survivors have come forward to testify in South Korea, their stories have proliferated into different channels run by several activist and political organizations, unfortunately leading to inconsistency in the appropriation of this historical issue. Skepticism of the “comfort women” issue has been fueled by the disorganized efforts of South Korea and other nations with histories of Japanese colonization to construct misinformed and hostile narratives of denial that seek to preserve Japanese international clout. This thesis, which looks at Korean, Japanese and international scholarship and documentation on the “comfort women”, with direct reference to testimonies from survivors, seeks to navigate through the politicized obscurity of the issue and address the core elements present in the history of Korean “comfort women” in order to provide a critical perspective behind the importance of the subject. It argues that Korean women were systematically dehumanized and targeted by Imperial Japan, which was motivated by sexual exploitation and cultural genocide, prior to and during the Second World War. This argument is supported with analyses into the cultural devaluing of women, the experiences of capture and collaboration between survivors, and the current state of redress and reconciliation efforts framed by Korean and Japanese post-war memories
Multiple-peak traveling waves of the Gray-Scott model
We study a reaction-diffusion system which models the pre-mixed isothermal autocatalytic chemical reaction of order m (m > 1) between two chemical species, a reactant A and an auto-catalyst B, A + m B --> (m+1) B, and a linear decay B -->C, where C is an inert product. The special case of m = 2 is the much studied Gray-Scott model, but without feeding. We prove existence of multiple traveling waves which have distinctive number of local maximaor peaks. It shows a new and very distinctive feature of Gray-Scott type of models in generating rich and structurally different traveling pulses than related models in literature such as isothermal autocatalysis without decay, or a bio-reactor model with isothermal autocatalysis of order m + 1 with m-th order of decay
Special Functions in Problem Solving Environments: A personal view
This paper discusses some of the philosophical and historical underpinnings of the talk “The Mathieu Functions: Computational and Historical Perspectives” given at the Maple Conference 2022. I also comment on the role Problem Solving Environments (PSEs) play in curating the computational knowledge of the 19th century, which is so necessary for us to think of special functions as answers rather than questions
Assessing the impact of host predation with Holling II response on the transmission of Chagas disease
Chagas disease is a zoonosis caused by the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi and transmitted by a broad range of blood-sucking triatomine species. Recently, it is recognized that the parasite can also be transmitted by host ingestion. In this paper, we propose a Chagas disease model incorporating two transmission routes of biting-defecation and host predation between vectors and hosts with Holling II functional response. The basic reproduction number R_v of triatomine population and basic reproduction numbers R_0 of disease population are derived analytically, and it is shown that they are insufficient to serve as threshold quantities to determine dynamics of the model. Our results have revealed the phenomenon of bistability, with backward and forward bifurcations. Specifically, if R_v>1, the dynamic is rather simple, namely, the disease-free equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable as R_0<1 and a unique endemic equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable as R_0>1. However, if R_v<1, there exists a backward bifurcation with one unstable and one stable positive vector equilibria, and bistability phenomenon occurs, revealing that different initial conditions may lead to disease extinction or persistence even if the corresponding R_0>1. In conclusion, predation transmission in general reduces the risk of Chagas disease, whilst it makes the complexity of Chagas disease transmission, requiring an integrated strategy for the prevention and control of Chagas disease
