Anishinaabeg Elders’ Land-based Knowledge: Enacting Bagijigan for Health and Well-being

    No full text
Indigenous Elders carry knowledge systems that are embedded within their respective land-based systems of knowledge. When Indigenous Elders pass away, their knowledge systems, if not preserved and documented, also pass away, which has lasting impacts on the continuance of Indigenous knowledge and practices of health and well-being. As a result of the enduring presence of settler colonialism, Indigenous Elders pass away at far earlier ages in comparison to their non-Indigenous counterparts. This article shows the results of an Indigenous health and well-being research project led by an Anishinaabe community in partnership with an Anishinaabe researcher. Guided by Anishinaabeg Elders and a Community Advisory Board, this research project preserves and documents Elders' knowledge of the land for community use and asks, how does knowledge of the land inform our health and well-being practices? In this article, we argue that Elders' knowledge is integral for regenerating critical well-being practices. We demonstrate that placing Elders' knowledge at the forefront of our well-being is an actionable practice of ganandawisiwin or good health. Without such knowledge and practices, we risk missing an opportunity to learn about well-being practices from our most precious knowledge holders

Client Perceptions of an FASD-Informed Indigenous Restorative Justice Program

    No full text
Individuals with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) can experience multiple layers of adversity that increase vulnerability to justice involvement. Given the systemic overrepresentation of Indigenous Peoples in the justice system, community-based interventions are important for supporting Indigenous individuals with FASD who are justice-involved, yet little is known about individual experiences with such interventions. In this community-based study, we conducted interviews with 12 adults in an FASD-informed Indigenous justice program, revealing stories of coping, growth, and hope. Findings suggest that blending FASD assessment with restorative justice approaches can contribute to physical, human, family/social, and community/cultural resources that support wellbeing. We describe tangible strengths and processes to leverage in practice and policy for supporting justice-involved individuals with FASD across settings and communities

The Schooling of Forced Immigrant Afghan Youths in Iran: A Study of the Factors Leading to Exclusion

    No full text
This article presents the results of a qualitative study which aims to better understand the educational paths of young Afghans in Iran. We conducted individual interviews with five child-parent pairs living in Tehran. The participants were invited to describe their families’ migratory experiences and the youths’ academic backgrounds. The interview data revealed that different intertwining factors led to the exclusion of the youths from school. These factors were tied to immigration policies and the youths’ social, familial, and educational environments. The results also showed that the youths were resilient; despite the many obstacles they had faced, they continued their efforts to achieve their academic and professional goals. This research highlights the challenges of welcoming and integrating young refugees in a non-Western context and contributes to the advancement of knowledge about the phenomenon of school exclusion in developing countries.

The interaction between family functioning and self-concept in Black individuals with binge eating disorder

    No full text
The present study aimed to identify psychosocial risk factors for binge eating disorder (BED) in Black individuals from the National Survey of American Life (NSAL). A matched pair case-control study design was used to compared individuals with BED (n = 88) against healthy controls (n = 88) on family dysfunction and self-concept. Family dysfunction was assessed through feelings of closeness, emotional support, and frequency of negative interactions. Self-concept included measures for self-esteem, hopelessness, and mastery. Results indicated a higher likelihood of BED when family dysfunction or a weak self-concept was present (Hypotheses 1 and 2). A significant relationship between family dysfunction and low mastery predicting BED was found (Hypothesis 3), but no evidence was found for family dysfunction predicting a weak self-concept in individuals with BED (Hypothesis 4). This study supports the importance of psychosocial factors, particularly family dysfunction and low mastery, as risk factors for BED in Black individuals. Future research should focus on understanding the role of family environment and self-concept, especially as it relates to mastery, in the development and persistence of BED and other eating disorders, which will inform the development of targeted intervention strategies and prevent the development of eating disorders and other psychiatric conditions

    No full text
Series and video games are two media that express themselves through distinct grammars. While both forms of expression draw inspiration from cinema in terms of staging, they differentiate themselves through unique narrative structures and an unprecedented relationship to fictional elements. As the overlap between the worlds of series and video games intensifies, recent examples like the series Arcane (Christian Linke, Alex Yee, 2021) have showcased the potential for skillfully translating complex video game universes into captivating serialized narratives. These adaptations reflect the evolution of the film, series, and video game industries, as well as their growing influence on contemporary culture. From the initial unsuccessful adaptation of Super Mario Bros (Rocky Morton, Annabel Jankel 1993) to the brilliant achievements of the 2020s, a process of recognition and understanding of these distinct media has emerged, giving rise to rich works with skillful points of connection between games and video. Let us explore the elements that ensure a successful adaptation of a video game into a series, one that convinces viewers, critics, and players.

This study investigates the use of institutional repositories for self-archiving peer-reviewed work in the U15 (an association of fifteen Canadian research-intensive universities). It relates usage with university open access (OA) policy types and publisher policy embargoes. We show that of all articles found in OpenAlex attributed to U15 researchers, 45.1 to 56.6% are available as Gold or Green OA, yet only 0.5 to 10.7% (mean 4.2%) of these can be found on their respective U15 IRs. Our investigation shows a lack of OA policies from most institutions, journal policies with embargoes exceeding 12 months, and incomplete policy information.

Strength in the Face of Adversity: Perseverance and Resilience of Racialized Staff in the Homeless Sector During COVID-19

    No full text
The emotional toll that individuals experience while working in the homeless sector ranges from traumatic stress and burnout to depression and decreased job satisfaction. Recent evidence highlights significant levels of post-traumatic stress symptoms among homeless service providers in some regions of Canada, which are higher than those reported prior to the Coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. This study seeks to examine the impact of gender and ethnicity on work-related stressors among frontline staff in the homeless sector. Utilizing data from a survey on mental health stressors and needs completed by a robust sample of 566 frontline workers in the homeless sector across Canada, we investigate traumatic stress, burnout, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), compassion satisfaction, and resilience between three key staff groups including Black, non-Black racialized, and Caucasian. Quantitative analysis revealed key themes related to 1) workplace traumatic experiences reported, 2) lived experience of homelessness, 3) lifetime traumatic events, 4) rates of traumatic stress symptoms, and 5) PTSD scores. Overall, Black staff demonstrated significantly fewer traumatic symptoms and lower burnout, and fewer on-the-job traumatic events, while non-Black racialized persons report slightly higher traumatic stress, burnout, and traumatic events, including traumatic experiences reported on the job. Non-Black racialized staff also report the highest PTSD Checklist (PCL) scores, indicating qualification for PTSD diagnosis. Caucasian staff reported the highest levels of lifetime traumatic events, traumatic events on the job, and burnout. Overall, racialized staff demonstrated lower levels of traumatic stress, and greater overall perseverance and resilience compared to their Caucasian counterparts. While areas such as coping practices and race-specific differences require additional research, the implications of this study can be used to inform institutional and organizational change and address mental health needs for racialized staff within homeless-serving organizations

How Many Dice Rolls Would It Take to Hit Your Favorite Kind of Number?

    No full text
Noga Alon and Yaakov Malinovsky recently studied the following game: you start at 0, and keep rolling a fair standard die, and add the outcomes until the sum happens to be prime. We generalize this in several ways, illustrating the power of symbolic, rather than merely numeric, computation. We conclude with polemics why the beautiful rigorous error estimate of Alon and Malinovsky is only of theoretical interest, explaining why we were content, in our numerous extensions, with non-rigorous, but practically-certain, estimates
