Analysis of algorithms as a teaching experience

    No full text
Teaching analysis of algorithms to students in Computer Science degrees, using the approach popularized by Knuth in his series of books ``The Art of Computer Programming" and later by Sedgewick and Flajolet in the book ``An Introduction to the Analysis of Algorithms", is not a simple task since, in general, these students are more interested in the implementation of an algorithm than in the corresponding theoretical aspects. This approach concentrates on precisely characterizing the performance of algorithms by determining their best, worst and average case performance using a methodology based on symbolic tools such as recurrence relations and generating functions. The most difficult aspect is to understand the average case since this corresponds to studying the algorithm as its possible inputs vary: this represents the most important goal since generally students have no difficulty in understanding the best and worst cases, corresponding to particular input configurations.A compromise that has been successful over the years consists in teaching students the analytical aspects of the problem and then organize a simulation of the algorithm with a system of symbolic computation in order to precisely check the theoretical results

What's in a Name? Les Petits meurtres d'Agatha Christie: filiation, adaptation, métamorphose

    No full text
The French series Les Petits meurtres d'Agatha Christie (2009- ), known as Agatha Christie's Criminal Games in the US, now boasts three seasons and an ongoing ratings success. The Dame’s work, which is openly referred to in the title, also seems to explain the series' appeal to the public. Christie, however, only appears in the background, since, in every episode, viewers discover her plots yet none of her beloved characters. This reflects a strategy that can be linked to the dichotomy identified by Shannon Wells-Lassagne (2017) between short-form and long-form TV adaptations. Using Lawrence Venuti’s theory of interpretants (2007), this article demonstrates that Agatha Christie's Criminal Games is a hybrid adaptation in the sense that it borrows from short-form adaptation the principle of a plot with a fixed beginning and end, that of Christie’s adapted novel, while emphasizing reappropriation which is typical of long-form adaptation. Formal interpretants appear in the use of the detective genre and that of Christie’s archetypes. Thematic interpretants, which show traces of "indigenization" (Hutcheon, 2013, p.24), appear in the importance of narrative arcs that are reinforced by an ensemble cast, and in the series’ nostalgic aesthetic. Agatha Christie's Criminal Games thus seems to prove that TV series are a form of "ordered genetic mutation [of] other narrative forms" (Carrazé, 2007) that go beyond adaptation and engage in a metamorphosis that support the creation of their own identity (Wells-Lassagne, 2017, p. 19).Les Petits meurtres d’Agatha Christie (2009- ) compte aujourd’hui trois saisons, et un succès d’audience qui ne semble pas s’essouffler.

This study examines the Canadian information research landscape through the lens of the eight academic units hosting ALA-accredited programs. We created a citation-based network utilizing the scholarly articles published by the faculty members and PhD students at each academic unit to identify and characterize distinct research clusters within the field. Then we determined how the publications and researchers from each unit are distributed across the clusters to describe their area of specialization. Our findings emphasize how the inter-, multi-, and transdisciplinary nature of the Canadian information research landscape forms a rich mosaic of information scholarship.

In this article we didactically analise the satiric poetry from Abū Bakr al-Ğazzār, an almost unknown author from Saraqusta’s Al-Andalus period, that lived between XI and XII centuries. We emphasise his satires because of his criticism with is opponent, Abū l-Ḥasan ‘Alī. It will be preceded by a short description of the gender and the period that frames his written work. &nbsp

Book Review of Higher Education in the Era of Migration, Displacement and Internationalization

    No full text
This is book review of a timely publication on addressing social justice issues unique to migrant and refugee learners, a vulnerable yet underserved population in global higher education systems.  It examines how higher education institutions globally can increase access, participation, and success of displaced people in the global context.  It fills a gap in the current literature on international higher education.  This book summarizes the existing body of knowledge on international migration, students' voices and experiences from different nations and continents, and higher education policy, leadership, programs, and services for displaced students.  Through presenting cutting-edge scholarship on diversity, equity, and inclusion in global higher education, the book exemplifies critical scholarship and innovative practices in improving atypical students' access to higher education in the global context.

Experiences of Homelessness Among Afghan Refugees in Iran: Empowerment Through a 4Es Model (Education, Employment, Emotional and Economical Support)

    No full text
Displaced people from Afghanistan comprise the largest protracted refugee population in Asia and the second-largest refugee population in the world. For nearly 40 years, most Afghan refugees have been received in neighboring Iran and Pakistan. In Iran, they have been provided with such provisions as healthcare, education, housing, employment, food, visas, and continuing residence. However, many Afghan refugees face significant barriers in accessing services, particularly when it comes to undocumented persons. This study identifies the factors affecting homelessness among refugees, drawing on interviews with eight Afghan men. We explore a four key elements (4Es) construct for supporting the empowerment of refugee people in Iran through education, employment, economic, and emotional support. The study argues that the 4Es approach can alleviate homelessness among refugees

    Locke's Skeptical Realism

    No full text
In this paper I contend that Locke is both a realist and a skeptic regarding the mind-independent bodies which are causally responsible for our ideas of sense. Although he frequently indicates that we have experiential knowledge of these bodies, I argue that this was not his considered position. In support of this conclusion I turn: first, to the basic contours of his accounts of knowledge and perception; second, to his argument for the existence of the material world; and third, to his discussions of judgment and probability. Locke’s considered position, I contend, is that instances of veridical perception do not yield genuine instances of knowledge. Rather, these perceptual encounters give rise to empirical judgments which enjoy a high degree of probability. While this prevents them from being suitable objects of knowledge, since Locke thinks that we can be nearly certain of their truth, he contends that we should not hesitate to think, speak and act as if they were instances of knowledge. I further argue that this account provides us with a more satisfying explanation of Locke’s dismissive attitude towards the skeptical hypotheses which appear throughout the Essay

    No full text
In French-speaking Africa, the tree and/or the forest unites a plurality of imaginations whose strength and characteristics match values and symbolism. With Jean Pliya, he allows a mytho-religious and ecological imagination to interfere, inspired by Animism which seems to him consubstantial. In the light of mythocriticism and ecocriticism, the decryption of the double figure associated with the tree makes possible to understand that it establishes specific and universal cosmic correspondences and combines the human and non-human in their totality to fertilize and fix existence.
