    Schrodinger Wave Equation

    No full text
The father of quantum mechanics, Erwin Schrodinger, was one of the most important figures in the development of quantum theory. He is perhaps best known for his contribution of the wave equation, which would later result in his winning of the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1933. The Schrodinger wave equationdescribes the quantum mechanical behaviour of particles and explores how the Schrodinger wave functions of a system change over time. This project is concerned about exploring the one-dimensional case of the Schrodinger wave equation in a harmonic oscillator system. We will give the solutions, called eigenfunctions, of the equation that satisfy certain conditions. Furthermore, we will show that this happens only for particular values called eigenvalues. The Poetry of the Archipelago- Andrei Tarkovsky\u27s Stalker

    No full text
This presentation will construct an intertextual analysis of Tarkovsky\u27s 1979 film Stalker with a reading of Alexander Solzhenitsyn\u27s Gulag Archipelago. Looking to Tarkovsky\u27s diaries and other writings, we can unpack how Tarkovsky\u27s theory of art, fit into the life world of Stalker. Pressing on the joints of his form content relationship, we see that Tarkovsky’s poetic concern with image, sound, texture and space- is able to embody arts very ability to create meaning. Stalker was Tarkovsky\u27s last creation in the Soviet Union, and the film complicates matters of spiritual conscience, in connection to the violence of the Twentieth-Century. In trying to express the psyche of Russia\u27s historical memory, Stalker\u27s poetic fiction speaks to the nature of not only traumatic experience. But experience itself. This perceptual grid of cultural identity in artistic identity is intimately shared by Solzhenitsyn in the Archipelago. Winning the 1970 Nobel Prize in literature, Solzhenitsyn spent 8 years in Soviet prison for criticizing Stalin. The collection of the Archipelagos, written between 1958 and 1968, outlines Solzenitzen experience in forced labor camp, as well as bringing together hundreds of stories of Soviet trauma. Using the Archipelago to describe the story of Stalker, connects Tarkovsky\u27s ideological concern to the nature of trauma experienced within the Soviet Union. Pulling at the thread of this proliferation of voices, Tarkovsky\u27s characters speak to a historic archetype by way of a poetic awareness. What Tarkovsky teaches us, not about only in his theory, but in his practice, is arts unique capacity to heal a lost sense of freedom. Discipline: Philosophy Faculty Mentor: Dr. Alain Beauclai

    Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome (CHS)

    No full text
One of the biggest upcoming health concern that will be seen with legalizing marijuana is CHS. Chronic use of marijuana leads to CHS, which is “characterized by cyclical vomiting and compulsive bathing behaviors in chronic cannabis users” (Alberta Health Services, n.d.). Marijuana affects the brain and body leading to short-term, long-term health and mental health effects such as confusion, fatigue, decreased blood pressure, decreased memory and concentration, lung infections, and chronic cough (Health Canada, 2017).By legalizing marijuana health effects will be seen in the adolescent population. ”Younger persons have a higher rate of cannabis use and an increased risk for CHS (Ittner, 2016, p.3). Brian development takes place during the adolescent period and the cannabis affects brain development and function (Health Canada, 2017). Hence, legalizing marijuana indicates increased use resulting in increased health concerns such as addictions and mental health. There are currently no Alberta Health Services (AHS) patient handouts available after discharge regarding management of symptoms, prevention, and when to return to the emergency department. Staff awareness of the condition and treatment recommendations will aid in standardized and expedited care of patients.jess Discipline: Nursing Faculty Mentor: Susan Carlso

Differences in Perpetrators of Intimate Partner Violence who Sexually Assault

    No full text
Although there is a vast amount of research on intimate partner violence (IPV), little has focused on sexual assault within an intimate relationship. Over time, research has encompassed intimate partner sexual violence (IPSV) as part of IPV, without distinguishing differences between violence by a partner that includes and does not include sexual assault. Literature has not yet examined similarities and differences of violent perpetrators who physically assault their partners versus those who also sexually assault their partners. The aim of the current study was to examine differences in police reported incidents of IPV in comparison to IPSV. Data came from a larger set of reported IPV occurrences to local law enforcement from 2010 to 2014. The index occurrence was used to categorize perpetrators into IPV and IPSV groups. Analyses were run comparing cases of IPV (n = 6804) to cases of IPSV (n = 164) on demographic information of perpetrators and victims, criminal history and recidivism of the perpetrator, as well as offence characteristics. Findings revealed that perpetrators who sexually assaulted their partners at the index offence were more likely to reoffend. Furthermore, the latency of reporting intimate partner sexual assaults took five times longer than victim reports of intimate partner physical assault. Implications of these findings suggest that there are significant differences in both victims and perpetrators of sexual assault in comparison to physical assault. Information Design: Visualizing the Structure of a Non-Linear Film

    No full text
This project was created for DESN313 Information Design. The goals are to synthesize, organize and display the complex structure and key components of a non-linear film that invites the viewer to navigate the information. The use of text is limited in its capacity to convey complex information because it promotes a linear and sequential way of thinking. Visual diagrams help organize abstract thought and concepts into something tangible to encourage the eye to compare and see relationships among the information. Diagrams are dynamic and multi-layered and expose structures that cannot be represented in pure linear text forms. (Tufte, 199) Discipline: Design Studies Faculty Mentor: Constanza Pacher &nbsp

    Hardy’s Jude the Obscure, Productively

    No full text
Critics often read Thomas Hardy’s novel Jude the Obscure as the individualist tragedy of Jude Fawley, whose hard work and sympathetic heart are not enough to earn him respect, success, happiness, love, or much of anything else. As illuminating as such individualist approaches are, they also take Hardy’s narrative and thematic intentions to a dead end.I would like the read Jude against the grain of Hardy-ism by rethinking traditional assumptions that the novel is premised on a dialectic between natural and social forces of change and the will of the individual. Such readings perpetuate a humanist focus on the value and importance of individual subjects to at least attempt to shape and mold their own identities. The novel reads much more clearly as a purely productive assemblage of bodies that, in line with Hardy’s vision of Jude’s world, does not actually privilege human subjectivity over other life forms and expressions. In my reading, Jude characterizes itself not by the breakdown of its characters beneath “malignant stars,” but by its exaltation of the environment, of nonhuman subjectivity. The Impact of Climate Change on the Wind Velocities and Wind Directions of Alberta

    No full text
Global wind patterns are shifting due to a variety of factors all linking back to climate change and human activity impacting the environment. As the polar regions of the planets move closer in temperature to that of the equator, pressure changes and circulation of the atmosphere are changing. Wind speeds are noticeable decreasing which impacts our ecology, geological processes, engineering, and energy production. Despite this, most climate change attention is focused on temperatures and precipitation. This study seeks to compare the annual wind speeds experienced across the province of Alberta today, to the annual wind speeds of 20 to 30 years ago. A similar comparison of wind direction will also be undertaken using ArcGIS. Results will then be analyzed for consistency with climate change predictions and the impact of wind variations across Alberta’s six natural regions can be investigated. This can be used as a future basis for impact monitoring and risk analysis of changing wind patterns across the province. Discipline: Physical Sciences Faculty Mentor: Dr. Nancy McKeow

License to Kill: A Multivariate Analysis Exploring Possible Racial Discrimination in Instances of US Police Officers using Lethal Force

    No full text
In the past few years police officers in the US have come under fire, being accused of using excessive force against non white suspects. Utilizing a data set obtained from Kaggle.com, we will test to see whether there is any evidence to support such a claim. We will look at classification measures, to see what variables, if any, allow us to separate the victims in our data set by race. Furthermore, we will explore the relationship between variables using methods such as factor analysis and canonical correlation analysis. If necessary, other tests may also be performed.
