Failure Rates Of The Matrix Triangle Inequality
The triangle inequality is a fundamental principle in mathematics. However, its validity is not always guaranteed in matrix theory, specifically, when dealing with the matrix absolute value. We investigate how often the matrix absolute value satisfies the triangle inequality for different spaces of matrices. By using numerical methods, we quantify the frequency with which the triangle inequality holds and examine possible key factors contributing to its success or failure
Who Owns Ancient Art & Architecture?
The ownership of ancient art and architecture encompasses both public and private spheres and plays a pivotal role in shaping the cultural identity of nations, both past and present. This essay posits that the complex notion of ownership is non-binary, highly nuanced, and that cultural repatriation should be considered on a case-by-case basis. This paper will explore the concept of the universal museum, dissecting its positive qualities and its less flattering aspects, followed by a glimpse into the illicit worldwide antiquities trade and how museums perpetuate the markets\u27 existence. Finally, the Elgin Marbles case study is exemplified to identify issues from perspectives of both public and private ownership
The Role of Property in Gender Diversity among the Indigenous Societies in North America
This study explores the relationship between Indigenous gender diversity, namely Two-Spirit identities, and property ownership and understandings of the land in Indigenous communities in North America, as compared to that of Western colonial ideology. As a society\u27s economic structure can be understood by studying its mode of production and whether property is seen as private or communal, I consider the influence of economic structures in Indigenous gender diversity: If pre-colonial Indigenous societies were inclusive of all genders, then is the absence of private property ownership in these Indigenous societies one of the reasons for their inclusive and equal societies? Along with the harsh socio-cultural changes brought on by colonial assimilationist policies, Indigenous economies and modes of production were also drastically altered under colonization. Accompanying these Western economic influences was a colonial emphasis on patriarchy and cisheteronormativity, which negatively impacted Indigenous non-binary gender identities, suppressing Two-Spirit identities. From an anthropological perspective, I explore these changes in the mode of production among various Indigenous groups in North America to reveal associated shifts in perspectives on gender diversity and Two-Spirit identities. Through a holistic lens, I discuss the role of colonial economic influences as part of the sociocultural changes to the status of Two-Spirit identities in Indigenous societies in North America
Exploring the education of internationally educated nurses in end-of-life care: A narrative review
Introduction: The purpose of this narrative review is to understand what and how Internationally Educated Nurses (IENs) learn about end-of-life care and practices in the host country of employment. Internationally educated nurses (IENs) are nurses from low-income countries that are recruited by high-income countries to assist with the nursing shortage workforce. Methods: A narrative review was completed using a search from the PubMed, CINAHL and PsyclINFO. Articles (n=131) were uploaded to Zotero. After two rounds of review, title and abstract and full-text, eleven (n=11) articles were included in the final dataset. Results: The findings represent the host countries from Asia, Australia, Europe, and North America and the IEN’s country of origin from Africa, Asia, and Europe. Specific countries were listed in the results. Five themes emerged from the data and included IENs Are Unprepared to Practice, Standardized Education is needed to Support IENs, Communication is a Barrier, End of Life Evokes Strong Feeling, IENs have Diverse Skills. Conclusions: While there are many challenges, there are also many opportunities. There are important implications for healthcare leaders in host countries who employ IENs. If IENs remain, at least in part, a solution to minimize the nursing shortage in host countries, leaders must understand the IEN workforce to ensure effective integration into the workplace. Developing a workforce that is culturally competent, and all nurses are able to manage cultural conflicts when IENs and domestic nurses encounter these situations
‘Ambrosio’ Taylor Coleridge: Investigating Three Issues in Banning The Monk
This paper investigates the banning in 1897 of Matthew Lewis\u27s novel The Monk, taking special interest in the dismissal of the text by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Sources reveal how British decency laws and the French Revolution together create a public repression which the Gothic novel both threatens and relieves in the 1890s. By highlighting journalistic reliance on Gothic terminology, the paper argues that banning art to protect citizenry is often a result of public insecurity rather than immoral content
Evolving social values: Intersectional Analysis of Same-sex and Interracial Couples in Magazine Advertisements
This study used a quantitative content analysis and qualitative image analysis to explore the representation and intersectionality of same-sex and opposite-sex couples with interracial and intraracial couples in advertisements from Canadian Living, Châtelaine, Cosmopolitan, Elle, Men’s Health, Reader’s Digest, and Sports Illustrated magazines between January 2021 to March 2024. Observations collected from a sample of 208 advertisements depicting two or more adults were used to tentatively suggest dominant Canadian social values towards same-sex and interracial couples. Advertisement images were coded for gender, race, the activity depicted, the physical touch between adults, and the presence of children. Results showed that representation of same-sex couples, both interracial and intraracial, was higher than the proportion reported in Canada in 2016. Similarly, the representation of interracial couples, both same-sex and opposite- sex, was higher than the proportion reported in Canada in 2021. These two findings suggest growing acceptance of same-sex relationships and interracial relationships. Interracial couples involving a White female partner occurred far more often than those involving a White male partner, suggesting social disapproval of unions between White women and visible minorities may no longer prevail. However, in advertisements with interracial or intraracial couples, depictions of physical intimacy favoured couples that were of the opposite sex. Advertisements with same-sex couples displaying intimacy were more often intraracial than interracial. Displays of intimacy from same-sex couples were almost exclusively between two women, and no interracial couples were engaged in very intimate touch. Results of the intersectional analysis finds a bias favouring intraracial, opposite-sex couples over both interracial, same-sex couples and interracial, opposite-sex couples unless the couples were engaged in simple touch, conveying friendship over intimacy. These biases suggest social approval of interracial relationships and same-sex relationships as long as they appear superficial or casual and potential social disapproval of relationships that are both interracial and same-sex. Only four advertisements depicted children with couples, and these showed a bias favouring opposite-sex, intraracial couples. The overall results from this study indicate that although there is increased representation of same-sex couples and interracial couples, advertisements may continue to reflect and perpetuate heteronormative and intraracial social values in concepts of relationships and family
Successful Aging and Preventative Health: A Business Owner\u27s Perspective
Successful aging can be viewed as a continuous and ongoing holistic process or as a goal-oriented approach. Both views provide sufficient exploration and definition toward development continuing through adulthood into the latter. However, the investigation of successful aging and how its definition can become affected by technological-based health innovation is an under-researched topic. Using literature and qualitative interview findings, successful aging may be considered to also incorporate the use of health-related innovation assets under the umbrella of preventative health, which contributes as an important factor toward how older individuals perceive the success of themselves and the various areas of their life as they continue to develop in late adulthood
Integration determinant: Do I stay or do I go?
Nurse migration is a growing global phenomenon and the integration of internationally educated nurses in host countries, contexts and systems is gaining increasing attention. A qualitative research study which was carried out amongst nurses in a small context in Malta revealed that a main determinant of the integration of internationally educated nurse (IENs) in the respective health system, and one\u27s participation in the host community and inclusion in the local society, was the IEN\u27s plan to stay in the respective health system, context and country or the IEN\u27s plan to go elsewhere. Data was collected through one-to-one interviews with twelve nurses. Thematic analysis of the data was carried out using MAXqda software. Ethics clearance was awarded from the Research Board of the University of Malta and signed consent was sought from all participants. The findings highlight the importance of acknowledging the immense impact that future plans of IENs have on their intention to integrate, their investment in integrating and the outcome of their integration. Implications of this finding for education, policy and management and research are presented.
Generating Functions Related to the Fibonacci Substitution
In this paper, two generating function representations of the Fibonacci Substitution Tiling are derived and proven to converge on the interval -1<x<1. A sequence of signs for the Fibonacci Substitution is established along with a conjecture that the interval of convergence has an infinite number of zeroes
The Fight Against Corruption in Romania: Struggles to Adhere to the Rule of Law and the (De) Legitimization of the ACA.
Romania’s desire to establish an efficient anti-corruption agency (ACA) dates back to its zeal for European Union (EU) membership. The former Prime Minister of Romania, Adrian Năstase (Social Democratic Party), played an important role in establishing the anti-corruption agency (ACA), specifically in the context of the country’s EU accession. In a comprehensive sense, Romania’s legislative and administrative framework for fighting corruption is well established. In this thesis, we will look at the actors involved in delegitimizing the ACA’s success, primarily the political opposition and the media, as well as the actors who have helped legitimize the ACA’s efficacy. Furthermore, the political divisiveness between the political opposition and the ACA has caused multi-level conflict within the Romanian government and will provide us with answers to a variety of questions concerning the delegitimization and legitimization of the ACA. Has the political opposition played a role in the negative impacts of the ACA by tarnishing the National Anticorruption Directorate’s (DNA) credibility? Does the political opposition foment limiting the role of effectiveness in the ACA by raising doubts about the agency’s political motivations
