The effect of preservation methods on the viability of microbial symbionts within a periodical cicada (Magicicada sp.)

    Get PDF
Introduction The North American periodical cicadas are in the Magicicada genus, these broods emerge every 13 and 17 years. They are the hosts to a variety of microbial symbionts. (Brumfield et al., 2022) Due to long periods before emergence, there is not much data about their microbiome and at what capacity each microorganism is present. We are finding baseline results of the cicada microbiome and the effects of different preservation methods on microbial viability so that preserved cicadas may serve as a reference point for continuing studies

AI Models for Neuron Segmentation: A Comparative Study

    Get PDF
Project goal: Electron microscopy (EM) provides scientists at The Schroeder Laboratory with a variety of biological insights into neural networks and synapses. However, due to the substantial data generated from the biological specimens being analyzed, the process of manual cell segmentation is labor-intensive and time-consuming. This project assesses and optimizes three different open-source machine learning models. Our objective is to determine which model delivers the highest efficiency, precision, and ease of use for our laboratory needs

Narrowing the Achievement Gap By Developing Students’ Skills for Success

    No full text
Research reveals several skills that help students succeed in college. I would research diagnostic tools that show our students’ skill levels and create evidence-based activities that augment them. I would also revise the Psy101 program to improve our students’ skills for success. I would share these tools with Parkland partners (e.g., CETL, FYE101, Learning Commons, Academic Advising) to enhance student outcomes. This will significantly contribute to my professional growth and renewal by allowing me to return to research, gain scholarly knowledge, narrow the achievement gap, and contribute to the cognitive science of teaching and learning in the APA, Division 2
