• Cucurbit Yellow Vine Disease (CYVD) causes substantial damage to important cucurbit crops, including pumpkin and squash.
• CYVD is caused by the Gram-negative bacterium Serratia ureilytica, producing yellowing and vine decline symptoms as well as fruit loss.
• The disease is transmitted by squash bugs (Anasa tristis), which are significant insect pests of many cucurbit crops.
• There is dispute whether transmission of S. ureilytica occurs through a circulative (in the hemolymph) or a non-circulative (within the digestive system) route within the insects
