Balancing the Competition in Different Teams
The purpose of this article is to probe further the line of reasoning that the AFL?s (AustralianFootball League) introduction of a team salary cap in 1985 and the player draft after the 1986season has helped to increase competitive balance. Booth (2000, 2003, 2004a, 2004b, 2004c &2005 forthcoming) argues the theoretical case that a player draft and team salary cap (combinedwith revenue sharing) in a conference comprised of one-maximizing clubs (such as the AFL) canincrease competitive balance. Most measures of within-season competitive balance focus on the distribution of team?s seasonwinning percentages, usually the (actual) standard deviation (ASD) of the distribution of winpercents, and sometimes their range. In this article we follow the recommendation of Utt andFort (2002) to continue to use “the tried and true standard deviation of winning percentages (andtheir idealized values) for within-season competitive balance of winning percentages” (p. 373).Following the approach suggested by Noll (1998) and first applied by Scully (1989), thismeasure has been used in the US by Quirk and Fort (1992), Vrooman (1995), Berri (2001) andothers to compare the closeness of competition within seasons. A ratio is calculated whichcompares the actual performance of the league, with the performance the league would haveachieved if all teams were of equal playing strength by measuring the dispersion of teams\u27 winpercents over a season relative to the idealised dispersion when all teams are assumed to haveequal playing strengths. The less is the deviation of the actual league performance from the idealleague, the greater is the degree of competitive balance

Effectiveness Of Personal Training
More and more people looking for the expertise of personal trainers in recent years. With very few previous efforts evaluating the strength of the personal trainingexperience in the scientific literature, this study utilized movement in the stagecoachesof the Transtheoretical Model (STM) to ascertain the efficacy of personal grooming. One hundred twenty nine volunteer participants (customers) (age range: 20 ? 65 yearsold) was designated a university senior personal trainer for a10-week course of study. At an initial meeting, the guests were moved over a form to self-assess their level ofmotivational readiness for exercise adoption (STM) choosing one of five stages: Pre -contemplation (not meaning to make changes), Contemplation (considering amodification), Preparation (getting ready to make a change), Action (actively engagedin progressing to a change but only for a little while) & Maintenance (sustaining thechange over time). Later the initial assessment, the nodes and the trainer then met oncea week and had targeted discussions on problem solving techniques such asdetermining the Benefits of Physical Activity, Barriers/Obstacles to Exercise, Support,System Recruitment, Goal Setting and Relapse Prevention in addition to providingspecific suggestions for the client’s other exercise days during the workweek. At theend of the 10-week personal training program, the clients, then reassessed their stage ofmotivational readiness for exercise adoption. Of the 129 clients tested, 27 were in themaintenance (highest) stage and consequently could not go up. None of these 27 clientsmoved down a level. Of the remaining 102 clients, there was significant (p < 0.01)upward movement at the end of the course of study. 61 clients (60%) went up onestage, 13 clients (13%) went up two stages, 27 clients stayed at the same level (26%)and one (1%) moved down a level. The outcomes suggest that one-on-one personaltraining is an efficient method for modifying positions and thereby increasing theamount of physical action. Secondly, it appears that using problem-solving techniquesis of value for successful behavior modification
Effect of Physical Education and Activity Levels
This study was conducted to determine the effect of physical education class enrollment andphysical activity on academic achievement in middle school children. Methods: Participantswere 214 sixth-grade students randomly assigned to physical education during either first orsecond semesters. Moderate and vigorous physical activity (MVPA) (number of 30-min timeblocks) outside of school was assessed using the 3-d physical activity recall (3DPAR). Studentswho either performed some or met Healthy People 2010 guidelines for vigorous activity hadsignificantly higher levels (P G 0.05) than students who performed no vigorous activity in bothsemesters. Moderate physical activity did not affect scores. Standardized test scores were notsignificantly linked to physical education class enrollment or physical bodily function levels
