    As a fat woman navigating the complexities of modern society, I am constantly confronted with societal expectations and perceptions of beauty. With this body of work, I wanted to explore the idea of how I feel about myself living in a fat body and how that has affected my mental state. This thesis explores the emotional terrain of living as a fat woman, focusing on the intersection of societal beauty standards, size, and identity. Through a series of ten ceramic sculptures depicting figures in various emotional states, I delve into the complexities of body image and self-perception. Through this body of work, I hope to encourage people to rethink their preconceived notions about body image and encourage greater acceptance of different body types

    The Investigation of the Soil Seedbank in a Long-term Mowing and Fertilization Experiment

    Seedbanks, the assemblage of dormant seeds found in soils, play a vital role in plant community dynamics and can aid in environmental restoration efforts. Studies have shown that fire suppression, anthropogenic nutrient addition, and human-altered hydrology can all have negative effects on aboveground vegetation, such as a decrease in biodiversity. However, little is known about the effects of these factors on seedbanks. Here I investigated how fertilization, drainage, and disturbance (mowing) have affected the seedbank community in a long-term experimental study of a coastal plain wetland. After 20 years of mowing, unmowed plots are dominated by trees with a limited understory, while the mowed plots are dominated by herbaceous perennial species. Long-term fertilization and drainage have also altered the species composition of the aboveground plant community, with these treatments causing a decrease in species richness. We collected soil samples from each plot at two depths and used the seedling emergence method to characterize the soil seedbank community in a growth room. Long-term fertilization could alter seedling emergence either through its effect on the aboveground community and the seeds that enter the seedbank or through effects on germination. To explore this, I conducted an additional growth room experiment comparing seedling emergence with or without the addition of nutrients to soils of each treatment plot. I then conducted multiple univariate and multivariate analyses to investigate the effects of both the long-term treatments and the nutrient addition experiment on diversity, density and composition of the seedbank and aboveground vegetation. A total of 2,509 seedlings emerged over the course of the experiment, including 20 families and 59 species. I found that fertilization, drainage, and mowing increased both the total number of seedlings and the number of species that emerged. The multivariate analysis revealed that species composition was also altered by the three treatments. The addition of nutrients increased both the number and diversity of the seedlings that emerged. I calculated a Sorenson similarity index to compare the belowground seedbank community to aboveground vegetation both at the start of the experiment and in the year that soil was collected. Greater similarity was found between the plots that were mowed in the year 2022. While the aboveground plant community demonstrated a decrease and loss of species because of the introduced treatments, the seedbank did not show this pattern. This could be due to the seeds not experiencing the competition the aboveground plant communities face and to a time lag in changes in the belowground environment. The seedbank had species from before the introduction of the treatments and also had species introduced from the new treatments. This time lag demonstrated between changes in the seedbank and aboveground vegetation in this experiment suggests that the seedbank can be valuable tool for conservation efforts. This data set is important because seedbanks are highly understudied, and they are vital to the future and potential restoration of plant communities

    With the occurrence of recent events, the workplaces of many corporations have experienced a major shift into the virtual realm. The formation of online meetings and increased email communication has created an exemplary environment for incivility to run rampant (Liu, 2020; Park, Fritz, & Jex, 2018; Liu, 2020). From, ranging from the lack of context given by emails to the ease of ignoring co-workers in virtual meetings with a multitude of members (Liu, 2020; Park et al., 2018; Pearson, Andersson, & Porath, 2000; Park, Fritz, & Jex, 2018; Liu, 2020). Subsequently, this paper study sought to draw attention to the importance of considering incivility experienced by telecommuting employees. Specifically, data were collected from 341 N participants who were fully employed full-time. Overall, incivility was found to be positively related to burnout, withholding of effort, and work-family conflict [main effect results]. Perceived supervisor support was also shown to be negatively related to burnout, withholding of effort, and work-family conflict. Additionally, perceived supervisor support was found to significantly moderated these relationships whereby perceived supervisor support strengthened the relationships between incivility and its' outcomes [moderator results]. Telecommuting was only shown to significantly moderate the relationship between incivility and work-family conflict for those who were telecommuting, whereby the relationship between incivility and work-family conflict was strengthened for those telecommuting

    Influence of Exercise Types during Pregnancy on Maternal Cardiometabolic Profiles

    Pregnant women can follow exercise recommendations posted by the American College of Sports Medicine for the general population. Various studies demonstrate that exercise during pregnancy is safe for the pregnant woman and the fetus and can have positive effects on maternal cardiometabolic health. For example, maternal exercise during pregnancy is known to lower SBP, moderate weight gain, and lower total cholesterol levels during pregnancy. While current research explores exercise effects on various cardiometabolic factors, there is a gap in knowledge when comparing specific exercise types and when comparing effects between healthy and overweight/obese populations. Based on current research it is expected that combination exercise with both aerobic and resistance training will decrease GWG, blood lipids, and body fat percentage, while increasing HDL cholesterol. To address this gap in knowledge, healthy, singleton pregnancy women between 13-16 weeks gestation were recruited and placed in one of four exercise intervention groups: aerobic, resistance, combination, and attention-control. With a significance level of p<0.05, ANOVA tests were conducted to determine significant differences between groups. All participants were analyzed before and after controlling for attendance, and then participants were analyzed based on their pre-pregnancy BMI. Major findings included that exercise is beneficial for SBP, LDL, and triglyceride levels, and the overall CMR decreased for each exercise group as compared to the control. However, when analyzed based on their pre-pregnancy classifications, CMR decreased for women with a healthy pre-pregnancy, but CMR increased for women who were overweight/obese pre-pregnancy, except for those in the resistance group. Further study is thus needed to evaluate this change in CMR across pregnancies in a large, diverse population

    The present study aims to investigate the potential of deep learning methodologies in enhancing diagnostic accuracy and healthcare outcomes in dentistry. Specifically, the study explores the effectiveness of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) in detecting dental abnormalities and distinguishing between healthy teeth and those exhibiting signs of furcation involvement (FI). The research findings suggest that CNNs outperform traditional machine learning models in classifying dental imaging data, particularly in detecting furcation involvement. This highlights the potential of deep learning algorithms in medical image analysis tasks. The study also presents a developed algorithm utilizing the Faster R-CNN model, demonstrating promising capabilities in accurately detecting individual teeth on radiographs and streamlining diagnostic procedures. The developed analysis tool offers users an interactive interface to select regions of interest and obtain classification results with ease and precision. Overall, this research highlights the valuable role of artificial intelligence in assisting clinicians with early disease detection and treatment planning in dentistry, which can improve patient care and outcomes in dental healthcare

    Educating anesthesia providers about autism spectrum disorder

    Clinical Relevance: Through delivering an educational presentation about ASD to a group of anesthesia providers at their monthly meeting and obtaining a survey afterward, it was ascertained that the information was much needed and benefitted those providers. The autistic patients and their families will indirectly benefit by having providers who are better prepared to understand and accommodate their needs.Healthcare providers (HCPs) who are well-versed in their patients’ conditions can undoubtedly give better care. Due to the increase in access to care, clearer diagnostic criteria, and streamlining of several diagnoses, autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is being more frequently diagnosed today. The nature of anesthesia is particularly impactful for patients who are autistic as the senses are manipulated, the environment is ever-changing, and interpersonal interactions can be stressful. Educating anesthesia providers about ASD is imperative for their practice. By better understanding ASD, providers can give more appropriate and equitable care. Through a posttest survey, most anesthesia providers stated they lacked confidence in providing care to autistic patients prior to the presentation. After the presentation, the providers felt more confident in caring for ASD patients.D.N.P
