NOT JUMPING ON THE BANDWAGON: OLDER WORKERS’ PERCEPTIONS OF INJUSTICE IN AI IN SELECTION PROCESSES
Technological advances are revolutionizing the world of work, with their integration into the workplace on the rise. Artificial intelligence (AI) exemplifies this trend as its adoption in organizational operations grows. However, its use in HR processes, particularly in selection, has prompted researchers to explore how workers perceive AI and its impact on procedural justice and organizational attractiveness. Often seen as a “black box,” AI’s opaque decision-making can potentially create perceptions of unfairness and unattractiveness. These perceptions may vary across social groups, particularly age, as older workers are often more critical of technology implementation due to their contextual experiences. To date, no research has examined how workers of different ages perceive AI usage in selection. Given that older and younger workers may view procedural justice differently, this study explores the moderating role of age in perceptions of AI in selection and its influence on intentions to apply. By merging research on aging, AI in the workplace, procedural justice, and organizational attractiveness, the study can better identify how AI impacts perceptions of the organization. Theoretically, this study is the first to consider age perceptions in relation to perceptions of AI usage in selection. Snapping Hip Syndrome and Muscle Stiffness
Muscle stiffness may contribute to tendon stiffness and increase injury risk, specifically in the case of external snapping hip syndrome (ESHS). The objectives of this research are to determine if there is a correlation between iliotibial band (ITB) stiffness and tensor fascia latae (TFL) or gluteus maximus (GM) stiffness, to compare the ITB stiffness between dancers and controls, to compare the stiffness of the ITB in the dominant and non-dominant legs, and to compare the interaction between dance participation and symmetry of ITB stiffness from limb-to-limb. It is hypothesized that a stiffer TFL/GM will be correlated with a stiffer ITB, dancers will have a stiffer ITB than the control group, the dominant legs will have stiffer ITBs, and dancers will have greater differences in ITB stiffness between limbs. Shear wave elastography (SWE) will be used to determine how muscle stiffness correlates with ESHS. Participants were recruited through flyers and a university's science and dance club. There were 13 participants total, 8 dancers and 5 controls, none of them dropped out and no data had to be excluded. Images were taken of participants TFL, GM, and ITB. The data was analyzed by taking the average of the three images at each location and performing linear regressions to determine correlations between ITB and muscle stiffness. A series of independent samples and dependent samples paired t-tests were run to determine if there were any differences between the dancer and control group’s ITB, or between limbs within the dancer and control groups. TFL was found to have no correlation to the ITB while GM had a correlation. ITB stiffness between dancers and controls was not found to be statistically significant but there was a moderate effect size found. Control ITB from dominant to nondominant was found to be statistically significant while dancers were not, suggesting dancers have more limb-to-limb symmetry than controls

INCREASING OPPORTUNITY AND ACCESS TO HIGHER EDUCATION FOR RURAL BLACK MALES: UNDERSTANDING BARRIERS AND PERCEPTIONS OF EARLY COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL ENROLLMENT
This inquiry explores the systemic challenges and perceptions influencing the low enrollment of Black male students in an early college high school in rural North Carolina. Using the Scholar Identity Model and improvement science methodology, this mixed-methods study seeks to identify barriers to enrollment, including cultural, social, and institutional factors, and to propose strategies for enhancing recruitment and support efforts.
The research highlights disparities in enrollment trends, focusing on Black males' underrepresentation compared to their White and Hispanic peers, despite the demonstrated benefits of early college high school programs. Data from surveys and focus groups inform the study’s findings. Barriers identified include lack of awareness, cultural misconceptions, and systemic inequities within application processes. The absence of specific extracurricular opportunities, such as affiliated sports and formal music programs, further deters enrollment, as do social pressures.
The inquiry emphasizes culturally responsive approaches, advocating for recruitment materials and events that resonate with Black students and their families. By addressing these barriers, the dissertation aims to foster equity, improve college readiness, and expand access to higher education. The findings also contribute to the broader discourse on minority representation in postsecondary pathways, offering actionable insights for policymakers, educators, and community leaders
AI Innovations and Cybersecurity Challenges in Autonomous Vehicles
Autonomous vehicles (AVs) are transforming transportation by improving road safety through advanced technologies. Technologies such as deep learning, computer vision, and reinforcement learning enable AVs to perceive their surroundings, navigate complex environments, and make critical decisions in real-time. However, their reliance on interconnected systems introduces significant cybersecurity challenges, exposing them to threats that could compromise safety and functionality. Addressing these risks requires robust solutions, including encryption, secure communication protocols, and real-time intrusion detection systems.
This thesis analyzes how artificial intelligence developments in autonomous vehicles evolve while analyzing the increasing cybersecurity threats these vehicles encounter. The examination analyzed the use of AI for enhancing intrusion detection by evaluating the Car Hacking Dataset utilizing machine learning models. In addition, this thesis assessed the present autonomous vehicle security practices to determine their compatibility with the NIST Cybersecurity Framework. Research shows that AI intrusion detection systems deployed with NIST-derived security standards significantly advance the security of AV networks and strengthen their capability to defend against changing threats
Language Acquisition among Siblings
Language acquisition may be significantly impacted by sibling relationships. This study examines the differing language abilities among impoverished siblings. The purpose of this study is to describe the relationship between having siblings and language acquisition in impoverished children in a rural elementary school. This qualitative research is conducted through the use of a case study. Data were gathered through interviews and observational field notes. The findings indicated themes related to The Leader and The Follower, and implications are shared for both parents and educators for supporting language acquisition for siblings who fall under these two themes
Reproductive Coercion: An Innovative Intervention for Adolescent Females
According to the literature, one in five women have been coerced into having sex without a condom by their partner, and adolescent females who have experienced RC are five times more likely to report intimate partner violence (IPV). In addition to unintended pregnancies, there is a strong association between RC and the risk of STIs, depression, and substance use with bisexual and lesbian adolescent females at a much greater risk of RC than their heterosexual peers. This novel upstream approach to implement this pilot intervention into current teen pregnancy prevention curricula will be the first intervention of this type to address this population. Over the summer of 2024, a review of the literature was conducted. This review focused on areas such as current innovative interventions, adolescent learning styles, and the use of different behavioral theories. Through the literature, it was determined six modules were supported and the content in the modules will be guided by social cognitive theory. Synthesis of published studies in those areas helped to guide our work. The objectives and activities will be presented from work in Phase II during Spring 2025 regarding the six modules developed. These modules are Module One - Definition of Reproductive Coercion, Module Two - Negative Health Sequelae of Reproductive Coercion, Module Three - Pregnancy, STIs, and Contraception, Module Four - Recognizing Power and Control in Relationship, Module Five- Skills to Improve Communication and RC, and Module Six - You are in Control of Your Body. Cardiac Connection: Virtual Nurse Utilization for Heart Failure Readmission Reduction
Heart failure (HF) is a leading cause of hospital readmissions, resulting in increased patient morbidity and financial strain on healthcare systems. This quality improvement project aimed to reduce 30-day readmissions for HF patients by integrating virtual nurses (VNs) into the discharge process to provide standardized education and schedule timely follow-up appointments. Conducted in a progressive care unit of a community hospital in central North Carolina, the intervention employed the Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) framework to implement and evaluate the new process. Pre- and post-intervention data were collected and analyzed to assess utilization of VN services, appointment scheduling, and readmission rates. During the four-month implementation period, readmission rates declined from 20% to 16.7% overall, and to 18.2% when excluding patients discharged to skilled nursing facilities, those leaving against medical advice, or those who expired during the admission. Despite lower-than-expected VN utilization (19.4%), findings support that VN led discharge education and timely follow-up appointments can positively influence readmission rates. This project demonstrates the feasibility and impact of VN integration as a scalable and sustainable strategy for improving care coordination among HF patients.D.N.P

Dr. Kolasa reviews their draft for technical accuracy, patient friendly language, people first language. She fact checks the study or other evidence-based reference the student provides. If a physician review is appropriate, Dr. Kolasa requests a colleague from ECU physicians to review the article. The final draft is submitted to the Reflector with the editor having the final say. The headline is written by the Reflector headline writer. The food and nutrition column has run weekly since 1987. Starting in 2020, in addition to the Daily Reflector, the article is published in daily and weekly papers owned by the Adams Publishing Group East (https://adamspg.com)
