    Get PDF

Assessing the effects of soil liming with dolomitic limestone and sugar foam on soil acidity, leaf nutrient contents, grape yield and must quality in a Mediterranean vineyard

Aluminium toxicity has been recognized as one of the most common causes of reduced grape yields in vineyard acid soils. The main aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of two liming materials, i.e. dolomitic lime and sugar foam, on a vineyard cultivated in an acid soil. The effects were studied in two soil layers (0-30 and 30-60 cm), as well as on leaf nutrient contents, must quality properties and grape yield, in an agricultural soil dedicated to Vitis vinifera L. cv. ‘Mencía’ cultivation. Data management and analysis were performed using analysis of variance (ANOVA). As liming material, sugar foam was more efficient than dolomitic limestone because sugar foam promoted the highest decrease in soil acidity properties at the same calcium carbonate equivalent dose. However, potassium contents in vines organs, including leaves and berries, seemed to decrease as a consequence of liming, with a concomitant increase in must total acidity. Soil available phosphorus also decreased as a consequence of liming, especially with sugar foam, though no effects were observed in plants. For these reasons fertilization of this soil with K and P is recommended along with liming. Grape yields in limed soils increased, although non-significantly, by 30%. This research has therefore provided an important opportunity to advance in our understanding of the effects of liming on grape quality and production in acid soils

    Get PDF

Attempts at grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) breeding through genetic transformation: The main limiting factors

    Get PDF
Breeding through genetic transformation offers the possibility to add or modify single traits in cultivars without changing desirable characteristics. In grapevine this technology has been scarcely used, taking into account the economic importance of this crop. Up to now, the breeding of grapevine through genetic transformation has been mainly focused on biotic stress resistance, mainly to fungi and viruses. Among the factors that can explain the limited reports of success are the difficulty in regenerating transgenic plants, the availability of only a few characterized genes, and/or the quantitative character of the trait. Another influencing factor is the negative perception of consumers, mainly in Europe. In this review, we discuss the methodology and factors that have limited the success of grapevine transformation, as well as outlining the attempts at breeding grapevine through genetic transformation reported so far. It is expected that the use of transformation, a powerful tool for breeding plants, will increase in grapevine in the coming years as a consequence of the growing knowledge of the function and regulation of grapevine genes and promotors, and of technologies for gene editing

Life History Parameters of Diachasmimorpha longicaudata on Ceratitis capitata Under Laboratory Conditions: Implications for Mass Rearing and Biological Control

    Get PDF
The Mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata, is considered one of the most destructive pests worldwide. The braconid Diachasmimorpha longicaudata is the most widely used parasitoid in biological control programs of tephritids. It has been mass-reared and used in augmentative releases against major fruit fly species in tropical and subtropical countries, and recently in the Mediterranean Basin. After its introduction into Spain and then Tunisia, reproductive and demographic parameters have been studied on C. capitata under laboratory conditions. These parameters were compared to those published elsewhere. The role of artificial diet for rearing the host is discussed. Our findings showed the good fitness of the parasitoids produced on C. capitata in laboratory with a generation time of 28.1 days, a reproductive rate of 39.2, an intrinsic rate of increase of 0.125, a doubling time of 5.2 days and the finite rate of increase (per day) was 1. Involvements on the biological control of the Mediterranean fruit fly in Tunisia are discussed

    Get PDF

    Get PDF

Patterns of ambulatory dispersal in Tetranychus urticae can be associated with host plant specialization

Dispersal can be an essential factor affecting the biological control of pests. Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae) is a cosmopolitan and polyphagous species that may reach the pest status in many cropping systems including clementine orchards, where it may be found both in the trees and the associated flora. In a previous study, we demonstrated that the use of a ground cover of Festuca arundinacea Schreber (Poaceae) offered a better regulation of T. urticae populations than traditional alternatives (bare soil, multifloral wild cover). Therefore, we decided to study the ambulatory dispersal of mites crawling up and down tree trunks in a clementine mandarin orchard grown in association with a F. arundinacea cover for one season. The highest ambulatory migration rate was upward from the cover to the canopy. Multivariate regressions showed that the dynamics of T. urticae populations in the trees was strongly related to that of Phytoseiidae mites, their main natural predators. Surprisingly, canopy populations were not related to those on the ground cover or to those dispersing from it. When T. urticae individuals collected from the ground cover, the tree trunk, and the canopy were subjected to molecular analyses, the optimal number of genetic clusters (demes) was two. One cluster grouped individuals dispersed from the ground cover (e.g. collected on tree trunks) and 27.5 % of individuals collected in the ground cover. The second cluster grouped all the individuals collected from trees and 72.5 % of those collected in the cover. Interestingly, none of the individuals collected from the tree canopies was grouped with the first deme. This result may be taken as indicative that grass-adapted T. urticae individuals are unable to satisfactorily colonize and establish on the trees and provides evidence that host adaptation can hamper dispersal and establishment of the ground cover deme on trees, contributing to a better natural regulation of this pest species in citrus

Development and establishment of an individual aggressiveness test protocol in breeding does

    Get PDF
The present work aims to define the optimal conditions to perform a resident-intruder test in individually housed breeding does as a measure of aggressiveness and describe the biological characteristics of aggressiveness in rabbit does: severity, frequency, duration and latency of aggressive events. Sixty-four nulliparous does at 90 d of age were used for this experiment, half (32 does) as residents and the rest as intruders, testing them once a week for 14 wk. The time and duration of each aggressive behaviour was recorded and analysed to assess the aforementioned measures. According to the results, and regarding the studied effects, the origin of the animals caused no effect, whereas the level of aggressiveness seemed to be clearly increased in weeks 3-7 of the experiment, when animals were 110-140 d of age. In conclusion, a resident-intruder test lasting 1 min is enough to assess individual aggressiveness in adult breeding does, the response of which evolves with age and repetition
