An overview of the research and patenting activities that took place in Brazil during the 2010s

    No full text
A National Innovation System is an interconnected network of public and private institutions that aims at the development and diffusion of new technologies. We use the Derwent Innovations platform to study the patent applications in Brazil between 2010 and 2020, and to identify the main technological areas that have benefited from the research conducted in the country. Our main methodological contribution is to present indicators that measure the technological importance and international scope of Brazilian patents. The results show that private companies rarely resort to intellectual property protection mechanisms and that public universities are responsible for most patent applications. This study concludes that private companies innovate little, and, as a result, academic research tends to act as a substitute for business investments in research and development, especially in software development, pharmaceutical outputs, and scientific instrumentation. On the other hand, Brazilian universities and companies are both being excluded from the global race for the Internet of Things patents that has characterized the fourth industrial revolution

Promotion of the quality of life of workers in a higher education institution: a scope review

    No full text
The present study aimed to map the evidence to provide an overview of actions implemented/executed and scales used in public higher education institutions to promote worker health. A scoping review based on the PCC (Population, Concept, and Context) mnemonic was conducted in PubMed, CINAHL, Scopus and Virtual Health Library (VHL). Population included workers from a higher education institution, the concept referred to studies focusing on the assessment of quality of life and health promotion actions and the context to higher education institutions. Electronic searches were held on December 2019. A qualitative synthesis of the data extracted from included studies (i.e. author, year, study design, sample, country, aims, action implemented/performed, thematic focus, evaluation) was performed. Electronic searches retrieved 3,330 articles that were screened by tittles and abstracts. Of these, 34 studies were fully appraised, of which four reported that actions implemented/executed related to sedentariness, posture and stress. The studies show 49 scales were identified to measuring at least one quality of life item. Through this scoping review the available evidence to provide an overview of actions implemented/executed and scales used in public higher education institutions to promote worker health. Future studies should consider more rigorous designs and objective measures to measure the quality of life of these professionals, and develop target interventions based on factors associated with the work. It is also necessary to evaluate whether the strategies work

Nutritional physical examination: historical, methodological and applied approach

    No full text
The historical interest in the use of physical evaluation skills in clinical settings gained new notoriety at the end of the 20th century with evidence that patients in intensive care units experienced increased morbidity and mortality related to poor nutritional status before and/or during their admission. This awareness of the adverse effects of malnutrition led to the need for screening and evaluation tools to identify nutritional risk. no clinical finding of EFN should be considered a diagnosis per se. It is academic, scientific and clinical consensus that its results should be interpreted as suggestive, being crucial to consider the other methods of clinical evaluation of the patient's nutritional status for the correct global nutritional diagnosis. However, the systematic and periodic repetition of the test may help to follow the evolution of the individual's nutritional status, especially in the long term. In summary, although it requires specialized training and continuous practice of the evaluator and/or the team – in addition to requiring complementary nutritional information – the physical nutritional examination can still be considered an effective adjuvant method in the clinical evaluation of the patient’s nutritional status

As a result, 23 articles were included for the discussion of the theme from four categories: Perception about Leadership, Challenges faced; Communication in interpersonal relationships and Professional qualification. It is noticed that, still, the need to reflect on the work process of nurses so that they have the necessary conditions to deepen their scientific research, developing safe and quality care and a management committed to professional and social valorization

Environmental Diagnosis of the Unconfined Aquifer in the Coastal Region of Northeast Brazil

    No full text
Groundwater is a large percentage of sweet easily accessible water and is often the only option for drinking water supply. In general, it possesses better quality due to interactions with the ground during percolation. In urban areas, however, various activities compromise its quality and demand, such as installation of black tanks, wastewater without treatment or with inadequate treatment, improper disposal of solid waste, waterproofing recharge areas, storage of dangerous products in underground or air tanks without basin containment, among others. The aim of this study was to evaluate the contamination of the unconfined aquifer in the North Zone of Aracaju, SE, through the analysis of physical, chemical and biological parameters of water samples from shallow wells, relating to potential sources of contamination, evaluating the effects of seasonality and comparing them to the limits of potability of Decree No. 2,914 / 2011 of the Ministry of Health, the results show that all samples were unfit for human consumption for at least one of the 13 analyzed parameters, with the most significant change in the dry season

This article invites us to reflect on oversharenting and family life that, owing to the proliferation of communications technology and the internet, is intersected by digital cyberculture. The research was carried out on the social network, using the method of searching by hashtag. The results showed that during 2018 in two weeks, 20,781 posts were made using the hashtag “minidiva” and 1,679 with the hashtag “miniblogger”, from which three posts were collected each day. Netnography was used to analyze the images and categorize them: (1) oversharenting and family life, (2) social media and child consumption, (3) child adultization. It was concluded that online social networks (Instagram) are spaces where interpersonal relationships; it was seen that the act of consuming gained relevance in the family and that the child’s exposure occurs without awareness, which can cause a high degree of exposure and consequently have adverse effects for everyone

Successful Parenting in the Contemporary Era of Technology in Pakistan

    No full text
Pakistan is one of the developing countries having low literacy rate in contemporary era of technology (Male: 72.5% and Female:51.8% but varies regionally), holding 180th position in the list of 221 big or small countries of the world. Media (social/electronic/print) has replaced parents, therefore, children learn and follow, as they find/listen/watch on it, parents have no more control over their children and consequently their teaching is no more effective. But in the present era of challenges/difficulties where parents find themselves hopeless/helpless, we find some parents have performed or are very successfully performing their duties. The objective of this research study was to discover the techniques used or parenting style followed by those successful parents. For the purpose, through snowball sampling procedure hundred (100) parents were selected. A questionnaire consisting close-ended questions was distributed among the participants and the purpose was to keep selected respondents on required track or provide them technical terms used in the world or to have fixed responses, while open-ended questions were posed to explore the techniques or parenting style adopted by them. The quantitative responses were analyzed using SPSS, while quantitative responses were sorted, labelled and quantified. The results show that parenting style or technique of using yardstick as per nature of a child is the reason behind successful parenting in the parent era

Experimental Models in Rheumatoid Arthritis:: A Systematic Review using the IRAMUTEQ software

    No full text
Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune and chronic pathological condition characterized by an inflammatory process of the joints It is a complex and multifactorial, involving genetic, epigenetic and environmental factors and the use of experimental models is required to better understand its pathology and for drug testing. The aim of this study was to perform a systematic literature review on experimental models in rheumatoid arthritis using IRAMUTEQ, a software that analysis, qualitatively and quantitatively, text fragments, as a methodological tool. After searching for articles published in the last five years on Scopus database and applying the exclusion criteria, we ended with 84 articles. The most commonly employed experimental models was the arthritis induction by inoculation of the Complete Freund's Adjuvant (CFA), followed by the use of combined methodologies and the collagen-induced arthritis (CIA). The analyses of abstracts by the IRAMUTEQ software provided a classification according to their textual elements in four classes, which were grouped into three main themes: in vivo models (class 1), clinical practice and traditional medicine (classes 2 and 3) and in vitro models (class 4) and it was also possible to build a similarity tree of the terms present in the abstracts and a word cloud with the most cited terms. Thus, the use of the IRAMUTEQ software as a methodological tool has been satisfactory, since it was possible to identify the main experimental models used, keywords, pathological processes and molecules involved in the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis free of the researchers’ bias, in addition to being a tool for visual and intuitive results

The role of unions in intellectual, technological and physical education

    No full text
The aims are to identify the role of unions in intellectual, technological and physical education of the workers and examine the main motivations of Brazilian union centrals for proposing educational initiatives, according to the existing literature on the subject. The central arguments point out that the intellectual education initiatives provided by unions should seek primarily to demonstrate the importance of dialogue in the educational process rather than merely transmit knowledge. The technological education initiatives may take the form of courses, workshops and lectures promoted by such entities, which could predominantly aim at raising workers’ awareness of the notion of “social technology”. The physical education initiatives – many focused on sports practices and body awareness – could predominantly move away from hygienist projects, get closer to the promotion of physical and mental well-being not to improve the workers’ performance in the workplace, but their quality of life outside the workplace, and achieve greater social integration. The authors conclude that, in fact, the most important union centrals in Brazil sought educational initiatives as ways of garnering workers’ support for projects that served the capitalist interests

Middle Childhood Adverse Psychomotor Outcomes from Malaria in Pregnancy: A Study using the Denver Developmental Screening Test-II

    No full text
Objective: to evaluate changes in the development of premature children aged 5 to 6 years, born to mothers with malaria during pregnancy and to compare them to a control group of premature children born to mothers who did not have malaria during pregnancy. Methods: cross-sectional and analytical study. The Denver test-II was applied to 20 children in the study group and 20 children in the control group. Results: in the group of premature children of mothers with malaria during pregnancy, the vast majority showed abnormal performance with more significant changes in the activities of the language sector "define seven words", "say two compound words", "understand four prepositions" and "account five blocks”, “knows three adjectives”. In the fine-adaptive motor sector, the activities "draw people with six parts", "copy disassembled square", "copy +" and in the gross motor sector "swing your foot for six seconds", "swing your foot for five seconds", "swing the foot for four seconds", "rocks the foot for three seconds", were the most important developmental changes. In the control group, the performance of suspected delay or possible abnormality was more concentrated in the gross motor sector. Conclusions: children from 5 to 6 years of age, born prematurely to mothers with malaria during pregnancy, 80% had suspected abnormal performance, a result much higher than the group of children born prematurely to mothers without malaria. These results strongly suggest that malaria disease during pregnancy alters fetal development, producing developmental sequelae that can be detected even at 5 to 6 years of age. In addition, the results support the use of the Denver test-II as a simple screening method for the assessment of delays in child development, covering broad motor coordination (coarse), fine motor coordination (adaptive), language and personal-social adaptation. This test has been used to identify children who are at risk of developing problems and to monitor the child longitudinally
