    ECONOMIC REALITIES AS DEPICTED IN `KUUSAA GADOO`

    The purpose of this study is to show how Gadisa Biru who wrote the novel `Kuusaa Gadoo` represents the Oromo`s economic issues realistically in the life of characters and the major themes of the novel. The study is qualitative research, it involves textual analysis method together with relevant conceptual tools and frameworks and therefore it is analytical. Furthermore, the data used for the research is taken from a primary source which is `Kuusaa Gadoo`. From the novel, different extracts are taken based on the research questions. Extracts used as data were classified under each topic and analyzed using textual analysis methods and realism theory. Then, the analysis and discussion were undertaken by using the concept of scholars to make the research more visible and logical. As a philosophy of realism theory, realism portrays the world as it appears. Therefore, to evaluate the realistic representations of different agendas of the research, it is crucial to bring the idea in the text to the actual world. From the analysis and discussion made it is found that, in `Kuusaa Gadoo`, all events and episodes were realized in the novel without any fantasy and extraordinary overstatement. Oromos were not economically beneficial during the Derg; the economies of Oromo peoples were used by others i.e. by leaders and investors from other ethnic groups. The Oromo`s resources especially land is highly corrupted by leaders of the time. Oromo peasants had no legal protection for their economy. Hence, the novel `Kuusaa Gadoo` reflects the real-life situation of Oromo peoples during the Derg regime.     Impact of the Covid 19 pandemic on preclinical teaching in medical schools-Lessons learned

    Objectives: The authors analyzed the weaknesses and areas of opportunities with the online teaching imposed by the COVID19 lockdown, and the new measures adopted to control the online examinations for medical students.   Method: In addition to personalized question sets we had location mapping and Open Broadcaster Software (OBS) for monitoring students during the exams as well as disabling the back-button during examination. Results: The academic year was successfully completed on time. There was no change in the exams format or scope, yet the results were similar in terms of grade distribution, average and standard deviation as well as the validity and reliability scores. The students’ perception of online teaching was evaluated through a survey. It revealed the importance and added value of online teaching but also exposed the gaps related to lecturers’ preparedness and need for training. Conclusion: The online experience was a valuable lesson for us, as we discovered not only the weaknesses or areas to improve, but also new ways and opportunities that can be explored to enhance the learning experience. Our plan is to introduce online teaching gradually to all modules and align it with students’ readiness through direct implications of students; however, every center should develop its own long-term plan to address its own problems and weaknesses

    Tan Dun created ​Water Passion after St. Matthew, written to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the death of J. S. Bach. Not only Tan follows the western tradition to use the texts from the Gospel of Matthew, but he also wrote some texts by himself in this piece, for example, the opening words, “A sound is heard in water, in darkness, the tears are crying for rebirth.” This innovation reflects his respect for tradition and oriental philosophy which is there is no beginning and end of life.&nbsp

    THE FEAR OF “OTHERS”: A STUDY ON SOCIO-SPATIAL CHANGES AND SOCIABILITY IN A DISTRICT OF CRICIÚMA, BRAZIL

    São Domingos, district in the municipality of Criciúma (State of Santa Catarina, Brazil), has undergone several transformations arising from the advance of urbanization. Since the 1980s, the neighborhood is no longer exclusively agricultural, with the installation of a ceramic industry, the beginning of a process of fractionation of properties and, more recently, the installation of a prison complex. This article presents the results of research that understand that the changes in the neighborhood are, among other factors, the fruits of the interaction that occurred between the subjects, producing various forms of social relationship. The research focuses on the perspective of the oldest residents of the neighborhood. The results show these changes are understood as a risk to their sense of community and to the values, which has contributed to the establishment of a culture of fear and insecurity, marked by the demarcation of differences between the subjects and the rupture of everyday life

    Aluminum Slag Separation Process Analysis Through a Vibratory Machine in the Foundry Process

    A The aluminum smelting industry has some challenges, due to the characteristics of the alloy that cause reactions that should be controlled. During the foundry process, the alloy is oxidized by contact of the molten aluminum with the ambient air. Oxide films forming on the surface of the molten metal must be removed during the cleaning of the furnaces in order to avoid contamination of the alloy to be used in the production of parts. Analyzing the melting process of a metallurgy at the industrial complex in Manaus, we saw that during the cleaning of the furnaces a metal tool is used to remove the slag, which brings with it a high level of aluminum brought about by the mechanical drag of the tool. As the company in question does not have resources to recover the metal aluminum contained in the slag, it is destined for the other institution which carried out the processing through the process of refusion of the slag and extraction of aluminum. The high level of losses in the process due to the discarding of slag generates considerable financial damage to the institution, reflected directly in the cost of manufacturing the products. In this way, the aim of the present work was to develop equipment for the extraction of the metal aluminum contained in the slag and consequently to reduce the losses in the process. The design of the equipment was chosen through a product development methodology, which made it possible to define the design specification, which can count on a container for the receipt and separation of the slag by means of the vibration brought on by motorvibrators installed at its ends, followed by a slingshot drawer responsible for the storage of the metal after the solidification and support/translate cars of the containers

    Esfiha with added chayote peel flour: physical-chemical characterization and sensory analysis among children

    The aim of the study was to evaluate the sensory acceptability of sfiha added to different levels of chayote peel flour (CPF). Also, determine the physical-chemical composition of the standard formulation and that containing the highest CPF content and with acceptance similar to the standard. Five sfiha formulations were developed: F1 (standard, 0% CPF) and the others added 2% (F2), 6% (F3), 9% (F4) and 12% (F5) of CPF. Sixty evaluators aged 7 to 10 years participated in the sensory evaluation. The addition of levels greater than 2% of CPF reduced sensory acceptability (p<0.05) of the sfiha for all attributes and for the overall acceptance and purchase intention, in relation to the standard product. Formulation F2 was the one with the highest CPF content and with acceptance similar to the standard formulation. Higher levels of moisture, ash and dietary fiber and lower levels of carbohydrate and energy were observed for F2 compared to F1. There was no significant difference (p>0.05) for protein and lipid content between the two formulations. It is concluded that an addition level of up to 2% of CPF in sfiha is well accepted by schoolchildren. In addition, the CPF improves the nutritional value of the product, especially with the increase in dietary fiber and mineral matter

    The Use of Open-Ended Student Worksheet to Improve Mathematics Communication Skills in Algebra

    Communication is the foundation of every learning activity. Mathematical communication is a skill to represent ideas in mathematical language so that it is understood by others who are used in problem-solving activities. This study aims to improve mathematical communication skills by using open-ended student worksheets in algebra. The research sample involved 6 junior high schools in Purworejo Regency, Indonesia which is divided into 2 groups, the experimental group consists of 91 students and the control group consists of 96 students. The study design used a randomized static group comparison design. The research instrument used 5 item essay tests that contained non-routine problems. The data analysis technique used an independent sample T-test. The results showed that the communication skills of students who were subjected to learning using open-ended student worksheets were better than the communication skills of students who were subjected to learning using student worksheets that are commonly used by teachers. These results provide an important impact that teachers should always integrate the presentation of non-routine problems in the form of worksheets as an integral part of mathematics learning

    Startups developed through academic Spin-offs foster the development of products and processes inside and outside the innovation ecosystem that originated them and have become an important research topic with regard to Technology Transfer mechanisms and University-Company cooperation. Therefore, the objective of this article was to bring up information that could contribute to the discussion on academic spin-offs, startups and the benefits initially generated by this cooperation. The adopted methodology was the exploratory descriptive, aiming the perception in the literature used in some arguments and data that would help the understanding of this relationship. In view of this, the results show us that there is a large number of qualified personnel within these firms and that this intellectual capital cooperates with the positive impact on a country's economic and social development

    The Propellant Stimulation and Hydraulic Fracturing

    The Propellant Stimulation is applied to increase the permeability of rocks; a certain quantity of explosive material is donated at the bottom of the well opposite the producing layer, which causes many cracks in the near well area. A good Propellant Stimulation process must consider the explosive material quality and quantity, and the explosion should be prevented from vertically spread so all its energy will be used to crack the rocks. The first part of this chapter explains all the above in addition to the directed explosions and its calculation in an easy way. In the second part, I explained the Hydraulic Fracturing of the reservoir rocks in details, from principal elements of the process passing through cracking fluids, proppants, preparing the wells and ending with evaluating the effectiveness and discussing the methods of hydraulic fracturing. Hydraulic fracturing is the process of pumping fluid into a wellbore at an injection rate that is too high for the formation to accept without breaking. During injection the resistance to flow in the formation increases, the pressure in the wellbore increases to a value called the break-down pressure, that is the sum of the in-situ compressive stress and the strength of the formation. Once the formation “breaks down,” a fracture is formed, and the injected fluid flows through it

    BIOE and the Teaching of Physics: inferences from the Critical Theory of Technology

    This article reads from Andrew Feenberg's Critical Theory of Technology, analyzing the International Bank of Educational Objects (BIOE) in Physics teaching, investigating whether the Educational Objects (EO) available in BIOE contemplate a process of teaching and learning that is critical and reflexive and that articulates with one or more pedagogical conceptions linked to its educational objective. For this, the qualitative approach of the documentary type was used for data collection and content analysis to arrive at the results. Thus, we verify that the EO for Physics available in BIOE do not contemplate a critical and reflexive teaching and learning process articulated to one or more pedagogical conceptions linked to its educational objective; it does not broaden the problematization related to educational practices in physics towards the politicization of science and technology, in understanding the implications of an educational technology; and it is absent in the very understanding of human relations with such objects and the systems in which they operate, including the teaching and learning process
