Nocturnal Foraging by Great Blue Heron (\u3cem\u3eArdea herodias\u3c/em\u3e) and Roseate Spoonbill (\u3cem\u3ePlatalea ajaja\u3c/em\u3e)
The Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias) and Roseate Spoonbill (Platalea ajaja) are long-legged wading birds that can forage throughout a 24-hour cycle. Nocturnal foraging enables these species to take advantage of optimal foraging conditions and reduced competition. This study aims to investigate how environmental factors influence the nocturnal foraging behavior of these species. To monitor foraging activity, we deployed 17-18 infrared cameras from dusk until dawn from 4 October 2023 to 24 July 24 2024, covering two sampling periods across different habitats within Fort De Soto County Park, a barrier island complex in Tampa Bay, Florida. We compared the frequency of sightings in open water to mangroves and assessed the influence of sky brightness, tide direction, tide height, and temperature on foraging behavior. Our cameras recorded Great Blue Herons foraging in 26 of 75 observations and Roseate Spoonbills foraging during 20 of 27 observations. Our analysis for periods of nocturnal activity showed that both species were active consistently between dusk and dawn with a prominent peak around midnight. Both species were primarily observed in open water, despite approximately half of the cameras facing mangroves. Great Blue Herons were significantly more likely to forage when the night sky was brighter and the tide was lower. No significant associations were found between the variables and Roseate Spoonbill foraging behavior. Our data confirm that both species forage nocturnally, which increases their ability to forage at the best tides, when human disturbance is lower, and perhaps when there is less competition
The double-edged role of cognitive reappraisal: a moderated mediation model of manager support and emotional exhaustion among hotel supervisors
Applying the Conservation of Resources Theory and the Affective Event Theory, this study explores the interplay between perceived manager support (PMS), negative emotions, and emotional exhaustion among hotel supervisors. The study also examines the moderating role of cognitive reappraisal strategy on the above relationships. Data were collected from a sample of U.S. hotel supervisors. Results showed that negative emotions play a mediating role in the relationship between PMS and supervisors’ emotional exhaustion. Cognitive reappraisal amplified the negative effect of PMS on negative emotions, the positive relationship between negative emotions and emotional exhaustion, and the indirect effect of PMS on emotional exhaustion through negative emotions. The study offers HR practices on how to effectively provide support and use cognitive reappraisal strategy to alleviate hotel supervisors’ negative emotions and emotional exhaustion
Mentoring in the age of uncertainty: why gen z, millennials, and gen x need feedback more than ever
Uncertainty now defines professional and personal life, particularly for Gen Z, Millennials, and Gen X. Despite being highly educated and digitally connected, these generations face growing decision paralysis, burnout, and confidence gaps when navigating careers. HSBC’s Seizing Uncertainty (2024) reports that over half of younger professionals regret missed opportunities, while Gen X struggles to adapt to new realities and lead younger teams. Traditional feedback models—hierarchical, infrequent, and retrospective—no longer meet the demands of today’s fast-changing workplace. This article argues that mentoring, anchored in real-time and emotionally intelligent feedback, is not a “soft skill” but a leadership necessity. Especially in hospitality and tourism, where frontline staff and managers make rapid, high-stakes decisions, mentoring builds adaptability, resilience, and clarity. By reframing feedback as coaching and partnership, organizations can transform uncertainty into opportunity and foster a culture where professionals act confidently, recover quickly, and contribute creatively
Pre-calibration of δ\u3csup\u3e18\u3c/sup\u3eO for paleoclimatic interpretations using stalagmites in Cueva Ensueño, Puerto Rico
Stalagmites are invaluable archivers of past climate conditions, as their oxygen isotopic composition (δ¹⁸Oc) closely mirrors the isotopic signature of the drip water (δ¹⁸Ow) from which they precipitate. This isotopic relationship is governed by the fractionation factor (1000ln¹⁸α), which is temperature dependent. In this research, we studied 1000ln¹⁸α within Cueva Ensueño, a cave situated in Puerto Rico’s northern karst region, as a step toward calibrating δ¹⁸Oc for paleoclimate interpretations using stalagmites. We collected drip waters, measured their temperature in situ, and sampled carbonates from ten selected stations within the cave. Sampling was conducted in December and May, representing months of the dry and wet seasons, respectively. To better understand isotopic variations in stalagmites, we farmed calcite at the same drip sampling locations during both seasons. Our findings reveal a seasonal bias in isotopic fractionation of farmed carbonates at Cueva Ensueño, with higher 1000ln¹⁸α values in May (30.7–32.7) and lower values in December (27.8–29.7), but when these values are averaged, they merge towards the isotopic fractionation of the shaved stalagmites. We also found that stable isotope transfer into the cave is delayed, which could be due to epikarst storage effect and piston flow recharge, with the May drip water likely affected by moisture recycling before reaching the cave (as shown by the high d-excess values). In contrast to stable isotopes, the drip elemental composition suggests an immediate prior calcite precipitation response, which could be evidence of a dual transfer process. This research illuminates our understanding of oxygen isotope fractionation, which is useful for paleoclimate reconstructions and can provide insights into similar settings in the region
Creative Climates: The Impact of Different Environmental Exposure on Group and Individual Creativity
This thesis examined the influence of indoor versus outdoor environmental exposure and individual versus group participation on verbal creativity performance. Guided primarily by Attention Restoration Theory (ART; Kaplan & Kaplan, 1989), it was predicted that outdoor natural settings would enhance creativity through restorative cognitive processes. Additionally, it was hypothesized that groups would outperform individuals due to the cognitive advantages of collective induction and information pooling. Participants (N = 256) completed verbal creativity tasks—Remote Associates Task (RAT; convergent creativity) and Alternate Uses Task (AUT; divergent creativity)—following a 30-minute exposure period in either an indoor student center or outdoor botanical garden setting, performing tasks either individually or in groups of three. Analyses showed that groups significantly outperformed individuals on both RAT and AUT measures, regardless of environmental setting. Environmental effects were marginally present only for the AUT, suggesting tentative support for ART\u27s claim about enhanced divergent thinking in natural environments. Secondary analyses found moderate correlations between convergent and divergent creativity, shifts in positive and negative affect unrelated to environmental conditions, and select contextual and individual differences (e.g., conscientiousness, nature connectedness) that influenced creativity outcomes. Exploratory analyses using nominal group comparisons reinforced the robustness of the group performance advantage. Results extend previous research by highlighting consistent benefits of collaborative group settings in creativity tasks and nuanced, conditional effects of natural environment exposure. Implications for optimizing creative group work and future directions in environmental creativity research are discussed
Untangling the Threads of Hope: A Qualitative Media Analysis of Discourse Relating to Futures for Sickle Cell Disease
Sickle cell disease (SCD) is the most common inherited blood disorder worldwide, with a disproportionate burden on people of African ancestry. Life with this illness is characterized by chronic physical pain, overlapping health conditions, and often early death. In the United States, the physical symptoms of the disease are frequently compounded by experiences of racial inequality and oppression embedded in the medical system that contribute to detrimental outcomes. Because of the complex biocultural web of factors contributing to the suffering of people with SCD, much of the anthropological scholarship surrounding this illness prioritizes deconstructing systems of power, oppression, and inequality. However, this passionate discourse stands in contrast to the contemporary rhetoric of optimism surrounding SCD from the general public. As of December 2023, the FDA approved two gene therapies with the capability of “curing” sickle cell disease. The possibility of this treatment, though still not yet widely accessible, has introduced a compelling enthusiasm to discussions about the future of SCD. Given the potential of such treatments in alleviating the chronic suffering that is characteristic of SCD, this thesis attempted to investigate popular media discourse to identify where the sources of hope truly are for people with SCD. This aim was pursued using an ethnographic content analysis (ECA) to compare discussions of hope in media by and about people with SCD. Participant observation and interviews were also conducted with a sickle cell advocacy group based in Tampa to provide a greater depth of understanding about attitudes towards hope and a “cure.” The findings of this study suggest that emergent gene therapies are not the primary source of hope for people with SCD. Instead, efforts to increase awareness, visibility, and community advocacy for those with the illness were observed to have a greater influence on feelings of hope
