Exploring Perceived Parental Vulnerability in Pediatric Cancer Survivors: A Comparative Thematic Analysis of English and Spanish-Speaking Families.
This study examined how perceived parental vulnerability is expressed among parents of pediatric cancer survivors and explored potential differences between Spanish-speaking and English-speaking families. Data were drawn from an existing ongoing clinical trial in the IHOPE lab of the University of South Florida, who collaborates with over 10 pediatric cancer survivorship clinics across the country. The study used a total of 26 (13 Spanish-speaking and 13 English-speaking) structured interview transcripts from parent participants. The transcripts were the first session with the parent participant, the interventionist spoke the parent’s preferred language (English or Spanish), perceived parental vulnerability was one of six topics discussed in the session. Data were analyzed and coded by 2 coders, through Braun and Clarke’s thematic analysis, supplemented by elements of content analysis, using NVivo 15 software. The main researcher developed a code book detailing codes of: fear of relapse, hypervigilance, parental strain, guilt-driven permissiveness, and difficulty with autonomy, these codes reflect perceived parental vulnerability of pediatric cancer survivors within the transcripts. From those codes, themes of persistent threat perception, emotional residue of illness, and protective parenting responses surfaced. Parental strain was coded the most in all the transcripts, following guilt-driven permissiveness, hypervigilance and difficulty with autonomy, and least coded for fear of relapse. There were more codes in the English-speaking transcripts when compared to the Spanish-speaking transcripts, although the codes were not evenly distributed, with some transcripts having more codes than others. Findings underscore the importance of cultural and linguistic context in understanding how parental vulnerability manifests among pediatric cancer survivors. Recognizing culturally specific communication styles can improve sensitivity of psychosocial intervention
Counting Doors by Integrating POMDP Models and PID Controllers
This paper presents an enhanced hybrid planning architecture that integrates Partially Observable Markov Decision Processes (POMDPs) with Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) control for indoor robot navigation under uncertainty. Our approach uses PID controller feedback—proportional, integral, and derivative signals—as observation variables in the POMDP model, exploiting well tested mechanisms of processing sensor data. A case study is conducted using an iCreate3 robot navigating a university corridor to deliver a load to a specified room by identifying door frames. We evaluate three progressively refined models with increasing sensor integration and probabilistic reasoning. Experimental results demonstrate that the multi-sensor fusion model achieves an 85% task success rate, outperforming simpler PID-only baselines. This framework provides a viable foundation for scalable, robust planning in lowcost robot platforms without advanced localization systems
Non-significant Effect of El Niño on the Nest Occupancy and Breeding Success of Markham’s Storm Petrel \u3ci\u3eHydrobates markhami\u3c/i\u3e
The impact of the El Niño varies across seabirds, usually altering the distribution and causing population declines. Understanding El Niño’s effects is thus critical for conservation. We monitored 296 nests of the little-known Hydrobates markhami during three seasons (2021–2023). We tested annual differences in individual breeding success and nest occupancy against the Southern Oscillation Index and found no effect. Our findings can be explained by the storm petrels’ diet, which is more closely related to primary production than is the prey of other seabirds. Alternatively, individuals may compensate for the effects of El Niño by changing foraging strategies
