Ceramic Amphora with Sphinxes and Lotus Flowers
Two black-figure sphinxes, striding to the left, are featured on either side of this two-handled storage vessel (called a Pontic-style neck amphora). Decorated with added red and white, one forepaw raised, their feathered wings curving upwards and their tails coiling in spirals, three of the sphinxes have white painted heads, the fourth head is black. Terracotta Head of Young Woman
A painted, mold-made terracotta roof fixture (antefix) in the shape of a woman’s bust. Her oval face is brightened by the archaic smile, the slight upward curve of the mouth. She wears a head cloth under a decorated conical hat (tutulus) and a necklace with acorn-shaped pendants (bullae). The raised hem of her tunic (palla) is marked in molded relief. Adopted from Greco-Roman architecture, variously shaped antefixes were used on Etruscan temples to conceal the joints of the roof tiles at the eaves. Like the korē-figure, the identity of this head remains unclear, but may portray a maenad, a follower of the wine god Fufluns-Pacha (Dionysus or Bacchus).https://digitalcommons.usf.edu/etruscan/1006/thumbnail.jp

Surrounded by a double black border, this polychrome mosaic has numerous gaps unfolding irregularly across the floor. The scene depicted is almost theatrical, and takes place on two registers with 3 couples of dancers. In the upper band, the couple on the left depicts a female figure fleeing from a young man, who was in the large gap to her left. The central couple, is followed by a young man in the act of grabbing a girl by the waist. The last couple has a part of the head of the male figure and the joined legs of the young woman who is presumed to be dragged. The last iconography is incomplete forestry. This mosaic is believed to represent a dance enacting a kidnapping and perhaps, or the rape of the Sabine women, or a pyrrhic dance that evoked mythological subjects.https://digitalcommons.usf.edu/idex_casale/1025/thumbnail.jp

This well-preserved mosaic extends over the surface of the portico within an elaborate frame, consisting of a band in imitation of brecciated marble. The scene depicts a series of cherubic fishermen in pairs on six boats while two cupids are immersed in the water. Along the perimeter a horizon is outlined made up of a succession of villas with large rectilinear arcades, behind which a dense and diversified Mediterranean flora develops. The cherubs, represented naked or dressed in a short tunic, are all distinguished by the classic “V” or “U” sign on the forehead. The waters have numerous fish of different species such as groupers, squids, mullets, torpedoes, seahorses, lobsters, dolphins, eels, moray eels, and two wild ducks that swim in the center as a cherub tries to grab them.https://digitalcommons.usf.edu/idex_casale/1011/thumbnail.jp

This room is considered the most important room inside the manor apartments. In it, 5 scenic representations are depicted with different themes. In the first section (45a), the upper register shows the final moment of a performance by musicians. The second register depicts 2 girls, with many sections lost. The last register reveals the lower part of a pair of tragedy characters. The first, a female figure, holds a mallet for the tympanum placed on a double step base. The second is a young poet reciting verses to a girl. The apse of the room shows a still legible mosaic set against a background with cut shoots full of roses (45b). Human Adipose Stem Cell-Derived Small Extracellular Vesicles Modulate Glial Cell Response in Aged and Young TBI Mouse Models
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a leading cause of long-term neurological impairment, with aging significantly increasing vulnerability and worsening outcomes. Older individuals experience greater cognitive and motor deficits after TBI and often show diminished responses to therapeutic interventions. Both aging and TBI independently promote heightened neuroinflammation and cognitive dysfunction, increasing susceptibility to poor recovery. This study investigated the therapeutic potential of small extracellular vesicles (sEVs) derived from human adipose-derived stem cells (hASCs) to promote neurological recovery and modulate neuroinflammation in a mouse model of TBI. Male C57BL/6 mice aged 3, 15, and 20 months underwent controlled cortical impact (CCI) and received intranasal (IN) hASC-sEVs at 48 hours post-injury; control groups (sham and TBI) received PBS. An initial dose-response study at 7 days post-injury (dpi) identified 20 µg as the optimal therapeutic dose based on improvements in motor function, neuroinflammatory markers, and neurogenesis. This was followed by an extended study to 30 dpi to assess cognitive performance, neuroinflammation, neurogenesis, and proteomic changes in isolated microglia and astrocytes using mass spectrometry. hASC-sEV treatment significantly improved cognitive and motor outcomes and reduced neuroinflammatory markers (GFAP, IBA-1) in the cortex, hippocampus, and (MHC-II) in thalamus, although these effects were less pronounced in older mice. Proteomics revealed that hASC-sEVs reduce inflammatory proteins (TNF-α, IL-1β, IFNG, CCL2), and modulated mitochondrial dysfunction and reactive oxygen species. These results highlight hASC-sEVs as a promising cell-free therapy for improving TBI outcomes, especially in aging population
Behavioral Response of Atlantic Puffins \u3cem\u3eFratercula arctica\u3c/em\u3e to Marine Heatwaves in the Gulf of Maine, USA: A Webcam Study
We observed a family of Atlantic Puffins Fratercula arctica in a burrow on Seal Island National Wildlife Refuge in the Gulf of Maine, USA, during the 2017-2020 and 2022 breeding seasons. The burrow was equipped with a high-resolution web camera, which allowed 24-hour daily observations. We investigated the impacts of elevated sea surface temperature (SST) and marine heatwaves (MHWs), which are linked to low food availability, on chick provisioning and burrow attendance. In 2017, 2019, 2020, and 2022, the female was the primary provisioner, providing twice as many feedings as the male, and the male was the primary burrow guardian, spending twice as much time at the burrow as the female. Using generalized linear models to estimate relationships between SST, feeding rates, and burrow attendance, we found that higher SST was associated with lower feeding rates and burrow attendance. These impacts were amplified in 2018 amid a prolonged MHW. The puffins struggled to find food consistently, leading to lower provisioning rates, smaller bill-loads of mostly low-quality prey, and a visibly under-nourished chick. This prompted the male to trade his burrow-guarding role for additional chick provisioning, and the chick fledged after 69 days, 28 days longer than is typical. This study is the first to demonstrate that Atlantic Puffins can modify their usual parenting roles in response to prey availability, deferring migration and extending chick-rearing by as many as four weeks. We also observed modification in chick behavior amid a high-intensity MHW in 2022, during which the chick was frequently provisioned with American Butterfish Peprilus triacanthus, a deep-bodied fish that is not easily swallowed. The chick consistently consumed butterfish piecemeal, pulling off and swallowing small pieces, until the remaining portion was small enough to be swallowed. This was an effective strategy and a behavior that has not previously been reported
Status of the Least Storm Petrel \u3cem\u3eHydrobates microsoma\u3c/em\u3e in Peru
The occurrence of the Least Storm Petrel Hydrobates microsoma in Peru has been considered somewhat hypothetical by some authors, as its presence was previously supported only by sight records dating back to 1982. In this note, I confirm the presence of the species in Peru based on the re-examination of three specimens deposited in the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles. I also provide a summary of the historical records of its occurrences in Peru. Least Storm Petrel should be considered an uncommon boreal migrant in Peruvian marine waters
