    Courtyard with Portico Entrance (11 a - d)

    No full text
This space’s shape is reminiscent of a large pentagon with an irregular perimeter. It has a roofless courtyard in the central part and is covered with white limestone slabs that are square or rectangular in shape. Only a few traces remain of the pavement on the south and east sides, but the semicircular fountains to the north and the square fountain in the center remain. The center fountain is lined in white marble, with part of the foundational cocciopesto preserved. Its drainage waters had to flow into the drain placed on its southern side. The surviving mosaic floor of the portico shows a motif of two-colored scales.https://digitalcommons.usf.edu/idex_casale/1033/thumbnail.jp

    Triclinium Triabsidate (57 a-g)

This room is considered, after the basilica hall, the most regal and eloquent of the late antique residence due to the dynamism and sumptuousness of its architecture. The mosaic floor is divided into different scenes. In the central hall (57a) Hercules’ 12 labors are represented on different registers. In the northern apse (57c) Hercules is accompanied by Dionysus and is taken into Olympus by Zeus. In the north (57b) we see Daphne and Cyparissus transformed, respectively, into laurel and cypress. To the south (57e) the myth of Lycurgus is told as he tries to kill the nymph Ambrosia. She is saved by the intervention Maenads and Dionysus. Continuing east (57f), on the right is either Hesion or Andromeda with Endymion. In the apse facing the entrance (57g) are the Giants, pierced by the arrows of Hercules.https://digitalcommons.usf.edu/idex_casale/1017/thumbnail.jp

Antechamber of the North Master Apartment (37)

    No full text
This room can be accessed from the ambulatory of the “Great Hunt” mosaic. It has a square plan with the function of anteroom and hallway for the other rooms of the apartment, and is hypothesized that it was intended solely for the Domina, or for the eldest son of the Dominus, or even used by the landlord as a private studio. The mosaic, bordered by a double braided frame enclosed by serrated bands, depicts Odysseus (Ulysses) in the cave of the cyclops Polyphemus. This section is narrated in Book IX of the Odyssey and represents the moment in which Odysseus, wearing the large red cloak and a short tunic, is offering a cup of his best wine to Polyphemus in order to get him drunk and later to blind the cyclops while sleeping.https://digitalcommons.usf.edu/idex_casale/1004/thumbnail.jp

Measurements of water-film thickness on cave walls and speleothems

    No full text
The water-film that coats cave walls and speleothems is a key player for the regulation of cave microclimate and the control of speleothem growth. In this paper, we demonstrate the capability of a confocal optical sensor to quantitatively measure on-site the rapid variations of water-film thickness when dripping, active condensation, or dryness occur on walls of various caves. Results obtained from a sample of four prehistoric caves and one stalagmite cave from Southwest France, indicate that the measurable thickness of water-films is generally in the 25-70 µm range for cave walls and reaches 200-300 µm on the horizontal plane of active speleothems. The high measurement frequency enables the monitoring of water-film dynamics for a few minutes, especially the tracking of thickness changes triggered by drop dripping and water flow. The optical sensor appears to be a promising tool for the conservation of prehistoric caves facing subsurface warming

Should I Stay or Should I Go?: The Impact of Socially Responsible Human Resources Management Practices on Hospitality Employees

    No full text
This study examined the connection between socially responsible human resource management (SHRHM) strategies and employee outcomes in the hotel industry. Specifically, this study examined the influence of SHRHM on intention to stay and positive word-of-mouth among hospitality employees. PLS-SEM was used to analyze 348 responses from US hospitality employees. The findings of the quantitative study indicated that SHRHM practices are associated with hospitality industry employees\u27 desirable outcomes, including the intention to stay and positive word-of-mouth. Interactional justice and organizational identification were found to mediate these relationships and were underpinned by organizational justice and organizational identification theories, respectively. These findings are significant in light of the post-pandemic labor shortages threatening the hospitality industry. Moreover, the study provides human resources managers with practical recommendations for promoting SHRHM in their respective organizations

    Methods for optimizing a transmittance and/or a self-cleaning property of a substrate using a self-cleaning coating

    No full text
Described herein relates to methods for optimizing a transmittance and/or a self-cleaning property of a substrate using a self-cleaning coating. As such, the substrate may be treated using a photocatalytic reaction of titanium dioxide (hereinafter âTiO2â)-based solution via a light treatment. The substrate may be treated using a combination including but not limited to wet chemicals, dry-cleaning, and/or mechanical polishing. Additionally, the substrate may then be overlayed with a self-cleaning coating, such that the transmittance and the self-cleaning properties of the substrate may be optimized. Furthermore, the methods for optimizing the transmittance and/or the self-cleaning functionality of the substrate may also enhance self-cleaning, anti-fouling, anti-fogging, anti-icing characteristics of the substrate

Cost-effective bulk glass reinforced composite columns

    No full text
A structural column comprises an inner sleeve comprising a first non-glass material, at least one sheet comprising bulk glass, and an outer sleeve comprising a second non-glass material. The inner sleeve has an outer surface and an inner surface defining a hollow interior of the structural column. An inner surface of each sheet is adjacent to at least a portion of the outer surface of the inner sleeve. The outer sleeve has an inner surface that is attached to at least a portion of an outer surface of each sheet, and the inner surface of the outer sleeve is attached to at least a portion of the outer surface of the inner sleeve. The inner sleeve and the outer sleeve can have a rectangular shape in cross-section. The bulk glass can comprise soda lime glass, and the first non-glass material and the second non-glass material can comprise high-density polyethylene

Publicly verifiable and resilient symmetric authentication and privacy systems and related methods

    No full text
A method for publicly verifiable symmetric cryptography is disclosed. The method includes: obtaining an initial encrypted key and a homomorphic public key; obtaining a first message and an initial signature; calculating an initial hashed value of the first message; setting a cryptographic function of the initial hashed value of the first message and an initial private key; generating an evaluated value based on the cryptographic function, the homomorphic public key, the initial encrypted key, and the initial hashed value of the first message; and transmitting, at the verifier, a verification result based on a hashed value of the initial signature and the evaluated value. Other aspects, embodiments, and features are also claimed and described
