Air is unsuitable for sperm transfer:
Sexual reproduction in the absence of water requires direct sperm transfer from the male into the female. Most amphibians – the first vertebrate pioneers of conquering terrestrial habitats – remain for reproduction with external fertilization in the water or return to it to deposit their spawn submerged in water. With regard to reproduction, reptiles were the first group that became independent from water and they developed organs for internal fertilization. Terrestrial arthropods have also developed a variety of primary and secondary sex-specific structures for the transfer of sperm on land. The dominating group, the insects, are characterized by their larval stages, which in respect to their ecological function, show striking parallels to the larval stages of the amphibians. The reproductive adaptations of the reptiles to become completely independent from an aquatic habitat have led to the development of intermittent organs for the transfer of sperm, whose variable, partly bizarre structures are influenced by phylogenetic, but also etho-ecological factors
Simulations in the Teacher Training Module “Fit for Heterogeneity through Scenario-Oriented Learning”.: A Theory-Practice Interconnection Concept for Competence Development in the DaZKom-Dimension “Multilingualism”/ Facet “Dealing with Heterogeneity”
Pre-service teachers always have wished for a professionalization that is practice-oriented, but at the same time takes place in a protected framework (Makrinus, 2012). Particularly for cross-sectional topics such as heterogeneity, especially for the heterogeneity dimension of multilingualism, there is often a lack of concepts that 1) make students aware of multilingualism (Karakaşoğlu et al., 2017), 2) link theory and practice and 3) provide opportunities to learn for an action- oriented professionalization. Pre-service teachers also perceive this gap and do not feel well-prepared in many respects (Döll et al., 2017; Ricart Brede, 2019). The article presents a seminar session in which students and actors simulate conflict talks (e.g., parent-teacher) that have their origin in the topic of multilingualism. In this way, pre-service-teachers should be enabled to apply and reflect on their knowledge and perceptions in an authentic and real-world context. The intensive preparation and reflection phase should give them the opportunity to explore their own potential and limits even before entering the professional context. And all of this is situated in a protected environment in which their actions do not yet have any immediate consequences for students, parents, etc. Evaluation results also show that the method presents an exceptional opportunity to learn for practical professionalization in the “DaZKom” (German as a Second Language) model dimension “Multilingualism”/facet “Dealing with heterogeneity”.
What’s disturbing about power? Reflections on teaching US-Arab encounters in the Middle East
Highlights:
– Culturally relevant pedagogy can be an effective tool for decolonising educational practices.
– The experiences of learners and teachers in the classroom are defined by the outside world.
– The case study method is a valuable tool for understanding classroom dynamics.
Purpose: The paper aims to illustrate some of the challenges and outcomes of teaching courses addressing the politics, culture, and history of the US in the Middle East. In doing so, it contextualises an application of Culturally Relevant Pedagogy and describes its implementation.
Methodology: A case study method is applied to qualitative records to illustrate the experiences of both the learners and the teacher, as narrated by the latter.
Findings: Narratives suggest that a curriculum of US import, taught in a context that bears the new and old scars of colonialism, makes US-Middle East encounters capable of deepening students’ understanding of their condition in a world still dominated by ‘others’.
Implications: The findings of the current study bring to the surface the need for decolonising educational practices that allow for imagination of life in dignity and pluriversity
Decolonizing social sciences education at the limits of the archive: A response concerning “postcolonial” social science
Highlights:
– Differentiates ‘postcolonial’ from ‘decolonial’ social science.
– Defines decolonial strategies of double translation, reverse tutelage, double and decolonial repair.
– Theorizes using South Africa as a theoretical limit and political test case.
– Provides examples of a taught Masters curriculum in Social Theory and a global open educational resource.
– Critiques the limitations of performative decolonization and gestures towards alternatives.
Purpose: This article responds to the topic of ‘postcolonial social science education’ by exploring strategies for decolonizing the social science ‘archive’.
Design/methodology/approach: The paper takes a decolonial-critical social science approach to explore the limit and test cases for decolonizing social science education, using two examples: a Social Theory course in Ireland and a global open educational project, Connected Sociologies.
Findings: It explores three decolonial strategies for social science education: double translation, reverse tutelage, and double repair. It theorizes beyond these by thinking with a more expansive, speculative South African project of decolonial repair.
Research limitations/implications: While the practical strategies for decolonizing social theory and broader, speculative ambitions for decolonial repair are not directly comparable, the contrasting loci enable critical, but hopeful reflection on possibilities for decolonizing social science education more broadly, responding to the limit case imposed by neoliberal academic restructuring
