    Senior Honors Thesis, Department of Neurobiology, University of Wisconsin-MadisonCerebral palsy is the most prevalent childhood motor disorder, affecting approximately 1 in 345 children in the United States (CDC). Perinatal brain injury is a primary cause of cerebral palsy, but little is known about mechanisms by which the infant brain recovers after such injury. Since heightened neuroplasticity is exhibited in the period between birth and 2 years, this constitutes a critical period to optimize intervention. This project sought to longitudinally investigate the individual and compound impact of somatosensory and motor cortical lesions on movement development in infants who experienced perinatal brain injury. Previous work has demonstrated the high interconnectivity of these regions and that they work in tandem to inform movement. Contributions of somatosensory integration to motor recovery after early brain injury have not been isolated or confirmed yet. Here, motor, somatosensory, and combined lesioned cortical volumes of 7 infants were quantified then correlated to Bayley-IV raw motor scores at 4 timepoints within the first 2 years of life. A low negative correlation between gross motor scores and combined, motor, and somatosensory lesion volumes was found, while no correlation was found between fine motor scores and combined, motor, or somatosensory lesion volumes. Results support that motor and somatosensory cortices are both involved in directing the course of motor development after perinatal brain injury

    How Others Feature in Emotional Self-Knowledge

    In this paper, I investigate the role of other people in our emotional self-knowledge. I develop and criticize Richard Moran’s account of emotional self-knowledge, which assumes that only my own interpretations from a first-personal perspective can constitute my emotional states, and other people can only offer observational evidence from a third-personal perspective. I argue that this claim is mistaken, for there is a distinctive second-personal perspective, in which others try to understand us via empathetic interaction. By taking up this perspective, others can participate in co-interpretation and constitution of our emotional states. Central to my disagreement with Moran is a particular conception of ourselves as self-knowers. I argue that as self-knowers, we are not entirely self-sufficient. Rather, we often depend on co-interpretation with other people to know what we feel. This dependence entails that, as self-knowers, we are vulnerable and indebted to others

    Introduction: Mothers of individuals with disabilities often face higher levels of stress, which can lead to various health challenges. Physical activity, such as dance, has been shown to support the well-being of caregivers of individuals with disabilities. Despite this, Latina mothers are frequently underrepresented in such research. Gaining insight into the beliefs and experiences of Latina mothers regarding dance is essential for developing culturally relevant interventions that promote their health and well-being. Thus, this study’s primary purpose was to explore Latina mothers’ beliefs and experiences about dance and their likelihood of participating in a dance program. A secondary purpose of the study was to identify Latina mothers’ preferences for dance programs to inform the development of culturally tailored interventions. Methods: Guided by the Theory of Planned Behavior, we recruited Latina mothers (n = 12; 48.08 ± 8.78) of individuals with developmental disabilities aged 3-32 years living in Puerto Rico. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews conducted in Spanish. The interviews were recorded, transcribed, and analyzed using thematic line-by-line analysis with assistance from NVivo 14 software. Results: After data analysis, six themes were constructed. These themes were: (1) Dancing for joy, connection, and tradition; (2) Dance, a physical activity for my mental and physical health; (3) Priorities, lack of childcare, and unawareness of programs hold me back; (4) I need to go the extra mile; (5) Designing dance programs based on mothers’ preferences; and (6) Empowering Latina mothers’ participation in dance programs through childcare. Overall, the findings revealed that caregiving demands, insufficient support, and lack of programs tailored to mothers’ needs hindered dance participation. At the same time, taking care of themselves to better care for their children with a developmental disability served as a motivator for dance and physical activity engagement. Participants valued programs that help them reach their health goals, including childcare services and a fusion of dance experiences. Conclusion: The results emphasize the need for childcare support systems to aid mothers’ participation in dance. Effective programs should be culturally appropriate and tailored to the mother’s needs. As well as provide a flexible approach that considers the demanding caregiving routines of the mothers

    The use of central nervous system depressants, benzodiazepines and z-drugs, occur in the daily lives of many Americans. They are widely prescribed which consequently makes them a significant focus in forensic toxicology. These central nervous system depressants are commonly detected in postmortem and clinical settings, which contributes to impaired driving incidents, drug-facilitated crimes, and also overdose deaths. The accurate detection and analysis of these drugs are pivotal in forensic toxicology laboratories to support criminal investigations, legal proceedings, and the determination of cause and manner of death. Hence, a study was conducted to develop and validate a robust analytical method for the detection of both z-drugs and benzodiazepines using a simple extraction procedure. The technique utilized a liquid-liquid extraction in conjunction with liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) which provided high sensitivity and specificity for the forensic analysis done at The Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene. The method was optimized successfully to detect both benzodiazepines and z-drugs. Validation was conducted in accordance with the ‘Standard Practices for Method Validation in Forensic Toxicology’ to align with the requirements set by the American Academy of Forensic Sciences and the American National Standards Institute. The method demonstrated strong analytical performance and offered reliability yet efficiency

    EQUITY ANALYSIS OF NITROGEN DIOXIDE EXPOSURE DISPARITIES USING TROPOMI SATELLITE DATA IN THE 50 MOST POPULOUS U.S. CITIES

    In the United States (U.S.), environmental justice (EJ) assessments have traditionally used race/ethnicity and income metrics to measure disparities. Research consistently shows that racial and ethnic minorities, regardless of income, face higher levels of air pollution exposure. However, EJ tools increasingly employ composite metrics that exclude race as a factor, creating a need to understand how these compare to traditional race- and income-based metrics. To evaluate the impact of composite metrics on equity, we employed the Climate and Economic Justice Screening Tool (CEJST)-designated disadvantaged communities and the EJSCREEN’s low-income disadvantaged communities (LIDACs). We used race/ethnicity and income data, and the composite metrics from the EJ tools (CEJST, EJSCREEN), to assess nitrogen dioxide (NO2) disparities based on 2021-2023 satellite data at the block group level in the 50 most populous U.S. cities. Satellite NO2 data is well suited to evaluate the impact of EJ metrics because it offers consistent, high-resolution spatial coverage which allows for an equitable assessment of NO2 exposure across all communities, including historically underserved areas. While race has historically been the most indicative factor for higher pollution exposure, our findings suggest that composite metrics contribute to a more comprehensive perspective. Specifically, composite metrics demonstrated greater NO2 disparities, with average relative disparities of +9.8% (CEJST- designated disadvantaged) and +8.5% (LIDACs). Among traditional metrics, the lowest average relative disparity was found for White populations (-4.5%), followed by Multiracial (+0.3%), Asian (+2.9%), low-income (+4.0%), Latino/Hispanic (+4.9%), People of Color (+5.6%), and Black communities (+7.9%). From 2021 to 2023, NO2 disparities were nearly double (97.5%) between the most and least exposed block groups. In cities with greater intra-urban NO2 variation (≥ 97.5%), underserved communities identified by composite metrics faced an average 2.9% higher disparity. Our findings highlight that composite metrics, while omitting race explicitly, still capture NO2 disparities—suggesting they can be effective tools for identifying pollution burdens in underserved communities. This has important implications for air quality policy and regulatory efforts, as it would support the integration of composite metrics in guiding equitable environmental interventions and public health protections
