Improving the Fabrication of OLEDs to Increase Light Emission
Color poster with text, images, charts, and graphs.Our research focuses on the fabrication of organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs). To produce efficient OLEDs, charges must be injected into the active organic layer where they can recombine to emit light. In our project, we focused on three ways to improve this process. A nitrogen glovebox with an oxygen sensor was designed and built to slow the oxidation process of the active organic layer and to provide an oxygen-sparse environment to store OLEDs. An additional layer (the polymer PEDOT) was introduced into our fabrication process to assist with the injection of charge carriers. Finally, a plasma cleaner was employed in our sample preparation. This both helps remove unwanted material from substrates and improves the work function of the device’s anode to aid in charge injection. With the implementation of these processes, we expect an improvement in OLED light emission, and a more favorable magnetoresistance.University of Wisconsin--Eau Claire Office of Research and Sponsored Program
An Analysis of the Chemical Spill Prevention and Response Practices at XYZ Medical Center’s ABC Laboratory
Plan BThe purpose of this study was to analyze the current chemical prevention and response practices
as well as equipment/supplies at XYZ Medical Center’s ABC Laboratory operations facility. The
lack of a robust chemical spill prevention and response system within XYZ Medical Center’s
ABC Laboratory is placing the organization at risk for experiencing employee, equipment,
property, and hazardous waste generation related losses. To achieve the goals of the study, a
chemical spill supplies and equipment assessment, a document review, a training materials
evaluation, and an employee survey were used to collect data. The collected data revealed that
inadequate chemical spill supplies and equipment were available to employees, the printed
version of the Chemical Hygiene Plan and the spill control procedure were missing prudent
information, and the electronic and printed versions of the Chemical Hygiene Plan failed to
contain documentation of an annual review. Employee training was deemed to be deficient in the
chemical spill mitigation process and for conducting chemical spill drills. The employees also
indicated lacking confidence regarding the ability to effectively mitigate a chemical spill
incident. The recommendations for XYZ Medical Center and ABC Laboratory are to provide
additional adequate chemical spill supplies and equipment, update and streamline documents
with prudent chemical spill mitigation information along with establishing an annual review
process, and to provide additional educational opportunities regarding both chemical spill
prevention as well as response approaches

He recalls being an early adopter of solar hot water heater technology emphasizes the importance of sustainable energy for future generations. Larry believes younger generations will innovate and find solutions to energy challenges, advocating for self-correcting decisions based on new knowledge. Elliot expresses hope for creating better energy practices for a sustainable future. The Influence of Artificial Intelligence Adoption on Educator Perceptions
A dissertation on the influence of artificial intelligence adoption on educator perceptionsThis study sought to identify how educators perceive the influence of artificial intelligence
adoption. More specifically, it focused on generative AI technologies and their impact on
teaching practices viewed from the theoretical frameworks of andragogy and the Substitution,
Augmentation, Modification, and Redefinition (SAMR) model. Employing a phenomenological
framework, the research explores the lived experiences of educators at a Wisconsin Technical
College who navigate emerging assessment strategies, ethical challenges, and shifts in student
engagement because of recent AI innovations. Educators were invited to participate in an
interview to express their lived experiences regarding artificial intelligence in education. Ten
educators took part, and their responses were thematically analyzed. Four emergent themes were
discovered: utility, change, ethics, challenges. The research revealed a nuanced balance between
opportunities of GenAI, such as increased efficiency and personalized learning, with concerns
regarding privacy, overreliance on technology, ethical considerations, and the potential of
reduced critical thinking skills. The findings highlight the importance of targeted professional
development and clear implementation of guidelines to support the responsible adoption of AI in
education. By focusing on the educator perspectives, the study contributes to understanding AI’s
role in changing instructional practices. Also, it offers recommendations that can inform policy
and best practices for integrating GenAI in educational environment
Resurrecting Memory : Uncovering the History of Jungfernhof Concentration Camp Barracks Using Ground Penetrating Radar in Riga, Latvia
Color poster with text, images, photographs, and maps.Ten kilometers outside Riga, a city located on the northern coast of Latvia, stands a public park that may seem mundane, but beneath the surface lies a dark past. Today the site is known as Mazjumpramuizha Park, but it was once the location of the Jungfernhof concentration camp during WWII. while there is one interpretive sign that acknowledges this history, it does not tell the full story and even locals remain unaware of what happened here. This silenced history is the focus of my research project, which aims to locate the prisoner barracks that once stood on the site and have been described by survivor testimonies. To accomplish this, I worked alongside a team commissioned by The Jews of Latvia Museum, utilizing ground penetrating radar— a non-invasive scanning technology that transmits electromagnetic pulses into the subsurface—to reveal what lies beneath. In conjunction with a Topcon-RL-H4C self-leveling laser to determine ground elevation, our team unearthed evidence of the camp’s barracks, including barbwire and the building’s rock foundation. For survivors, our findings provide evidence to help bring closure and launch memorial efforts via the creation of a steel monument inscribed with the victims’ names known as the Locker of Memory.L.E. Predicting Species-Specific Differences in Protein- Ligand Interactions for Prolyl-tRNA Synthetases Using Machine Learning
Color poster with text, images, charts, and graphs.Understanding how proteins and ligands interact is essential for drug discovery, especially for prolyl-tRNA synthetase (ProRS), which is responsible for attaching proline to the corresponding tRNA molecule, a key step in protein biosynthesis in all living organisms. Thus, species-specific inhibitor design for this target holds a key promise in the development of antibiotics with minimal side effects. In the current study, the binding affinities of ligands as well as protein-ligand interactions have been studied for several ProRSs across different host species. Both the physics-based and machine learning models have been utilized, as the latter group of models are computationally inexpensive. The classical physics-based model predicts the affinities by combining the hydrogen bonding, electrostatic, van der Waals, and implicit solvation, while the machine learning model utilizes a deep learning architecture through graph convolutional neural network stitched to artificial neural network. The latter approach enables a faster and more scalable screening of potential drug candidates. Results obtained from the screening method will be compared against a physics-based simulation of molecular interactions and their corresponding binding affinities for the various ProRS enzymes. Generating Symmetric Crossword Grids for The New York Times Mini Puzzle
Color poster with text, images, and charts.A standard crossword puzzle grid contains words of at least three letters, has no completely black rows or columns, and is symmetric. These grids are combinatorial in nature, making them an interesting object of mathematical study. We present code that generates all possible 5×5 crossword grids under specific symmetry constraints, inspired by the format of The New York Times Mini crosswords. Our work builds on existing research by Cote and Merrill (2021) which gave a representation of crossword grids as bipartite graphs with a node for each word and an edge connecting any intersecting words. We construct crossword graphs for all 5x5 grids with various symmetries and study their graph theoretic features. This project contributes new results to the mathematical study of crossword puzzles by exploring non-traditional symmetries in puzzle grids (diagonal, horizontal, vertical) which have not previously been studied.University of Wisconsin--Eau Claire Office of Research and Sponsored Program
Exploration of Viable Alternative Solvents to Dichloromethane in Organic Synthesis and Purification
Color poster with text, images, charts, and graphs.Dichloromethane (DCM) is an organic solvent with complimentary properties such as low boiling point, slight polarity, and efficiency in dissolving organic molecules that have resulted in DCM being used in many chemical industries with various important applications in synthesis and purification. New restrictions of DCM use are taking effect May 2025, that aim to minimize the risk to human and environmental health via controlled exposure limits. In our undergraduate organic synthesis research, DCM is used in separations during the purification process and as a reaction solvent, therefore it is ideal to find viable alternatives to DCM to have an informed decision on when to opt into using DCM. Alternative solvents and mixtures that possess similar properties regarding solubility and volatility have been identified by the American Chemical Society and career chemists, but each reaction needs to be independently optimized. Diethyl ether, ethyl acetate/ethanol (3:1), and dioxane will be tested as both reaction solvents and purification solvents for several organic synthesis reactions and evaluated based on purity and percent yield for viability as replacement for DCM use. De Haití a Cuba: Matices de la afrodscendencia en El reino de este mundo
Esta tesis se sirve de El reino de este mundo, de Alejo Carpentier, para analizar las complejidades que caracterizan la identidad de los afrodescendientes en el Caribe de los siglos XVIII y XIX, antes y durante la Revolución Haitiana (1791-1804). Durante este período, los pueblos de ascendencia africana encuentran formas de expresar y reconstruir su identidad, trazando nuevos caminos y agencias de resistencia y autodeterminación, negando entonces la identidad históricamente centralizada y rígidamente impuesta construida sobre los cimientos de la colonización y la esclavitud de un sistema colonial opresivo. La tesis deja al descubierto las cicatrices del pasado del Caribe desde su primer contacto con los europeos, y explica por qué la reconstrucción de una identidad afrodescendiente es un ejercicio complejo. THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN NEURODIVERSITY ATTITUDES AND THE IMPACT OF STUTTERING ON ADULT STUTTERERS
This study explored the relationship between adult stutterers’ endorsement of neurodiversity attitudes and the perceived impact of stuttering on daily life. Seven adult stutterers completed the Stuttering and Neurodiversity Attitudes Scale (SNAS), adapted from VanDaalen et al. (2024), and the Overall Assessment of the Speaker’s Experience of Stuttering—Adult Research Version (OASES-A-R; Tichenor & Yaruss, 2024). The study hypothesized that greater endorsement of neurodiversity attitudes would be associated with lower reported stuttering impact and that self-identified neurodivergent individuals would show stronger endorsement of neurodiversity attitudes than those who did not identify as neurodivergent. While participants who identified as neurodivergent endorsed stuttering permanence more strongly than non-neurodivergent participants, no significant correlation was found between overall neurodiversity endorsement and OASES impact scores. These findings suggest that neurodiversity-oriented attitudes can be meaningfully measured in adult stutterers and that identity as neurodivergent may influence beliefs about the nature of stuttering. However, in this small sample, endorsement of neurodiversity attitudes alone was not associated with reduced perceived impact of stuttering. The SNAS demonstrates potential as a tool for assessing stuttering-related attitudes and may contribute to future development of neuroaffirming, person-centered stuttering interventions. Further research with larger and more diverse samples is recommended.2027-08-2
