Parentally Perceived Family Environments of Children Identified as Attention Deficit-Hyperactive
Get PDFParental perceptions of the family social environment were investigated for the families of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder boys (ADHD) and those families without Attention Deficit Disorder boys (Non-ADHD). Mothers and fathers from forty-four intact families (20 Non-ADHD; 24 ADHD) independently completed the Family Environment Scale (Form Real and Form Ideal), a symptomology checklist, and a parent stress questionnaire. The Family Environment Scale (FES) was used to identify the factors that were unique to the family of the ADHD children. Following the identification of subscale factors, the relationship between the FES factors and the ratings of the child\u27s symptoms were examined. Families of ADHD children reported significantly less Expressiveness, Organization, Cohesion, and Active-Recreational Orientation, and reported significantly higher levels of Conflict. The family environment ratings of ADHD mothers correlated more often with the child\u27s symptomology ratings. The discussion addresses the importance of including parental perceptions in a therapist\u27s initial assessment
A Comparison of Mexican American Adolescent Educational and Career Decision-making and Perceived Influences
Get PDFPrevious research has considered Mexican Americans as a homogeneous group in studies relating to education and career decision-making of adolescents. In a study of 22 Mexican American adolescents, using an interview format, results report similarities between lower and middle income Mexican American youth in occupational expectations and in value-orientations which are not characteristic of traditionalism. Findings indicate differences between the two groups in educational expectations, degree of certainty, effects of the familial environment, and in hope of success for the future. Both lower and middle income youth respond to parental influence no matter how close the relationship, but parental expectations, possibly affected by perceptions of inaccessible mobility, are. lower for lower income youth. Responses from youth in both groups indicate their counseling needs, in particular those related to the world of work, are not presently being met in public schools
The Attributes of Leadership in Southern Baptist Churches in West Texas
Get PDFThis study deals with leadership attributes in Southern Baptist churches in West Texas. A review of literature indicated that leadership in the congregations would tend to reflect the perceived purposes of the group, would be elected by the church or arise to counter poor leadership by the elected leader(s), probably be relationship oriented, and that the selection of leaders would be affected by the size of the churches and the length of tenure of the pastors. The study attempted to determine if there were characteristics that set leaders apart from non leaders in the churches. Six variable clusters of characteristics of nominated leaders (Self Acceptance, Interpersonal Activities, Need Achievement, Social Status, Church related Activities and Spiritual Orientation), and the effect of the length of the pastor’s tenure and the size of the church on leadership were considered. Primary indicators of leadership were found to be the variable clusters of Church Related Activities, Spiritual Orientation and Self Acceptance. No apparent relationship was found between leadership selection and size of church or length of pastor\u27s tenure

Developing Thinking Competencies and Self-Esteem through Selected Literature and Higher-Level Questioning Strategies
Get PDFThis project developed curriculum focusing upon the importance of using literature and higher-level questioning strategies as a tool to increase a student\u27s self-esteem. The major emphasis of the study was on developing higher-level questioning strategies to promote thinking on the part of the student in order to improve self-esteem. Common conflict situations threatening the improvement of self-esteem were selected. After reviewing the literature, a curriculum containing an annotated, categorized bibliography of relevant books accompanied with specific questioning strategies was compiled to aid the classroom teacher to develop higher-level questioning skills in children
The MMPI-2 Clinical Scales and Clinical Diagnosis: Differentiating between Schizophrenic and Bipolar-Manic Disorders
Get PDFThe validity of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI-2) clinical scales in differentiating schizophrenia and bipolar-manic disorders was evaluated in terms of MMPI-2 congruence with psychiatric hospital treatment team diagnoses. From a pool of 286 MMPI-2 profiles, valid profiles were obtained on 5 schizophrenia (paranoid type) inpatients and 5 bipolar-manic disordered psychiatric inpatients and were assessed by using each of four MMPI profile classification methods. Overall, the rate of agreement between treatment team diagnosis and the MMPI profile classification methods for both the schizophrenia (paranoid type) and bipolar-manic disordered groups was inconclusive. The results suggest that the MMPI-2 is of limited value in differentiating inpatients with schizophrenia (paranoid type) and bipolar-manic disorders
