    Use of Psychological Skills Training by NCAA Softball Teams

    The purpose of the study was to determine if there were significant differences in the use, administration, frequency, and coaches’ perceived benefit of psychological skills training (PST) among NCAA Division I teams that qualified for a regional tournament, teams that did not qualify for a regional tournament with .500 or above wining percentage, and teams that did not qualify for a regional tournament with below .500 winning percentage. No significant differences were found between more and less successful NCAA Division I softball teams in the use, administration, frequency, and coaches’ perceived benefit of PST based on performance with the season outcome as the measure of success. It is likely that the accuracy to which a coach matches the potential skills, administrators, and frequency of PST to the needs of the team may be the significant component of psychological skills training. Future studies are recommended

    The Effects of Child Sexual Abuse and Posttraumatic Stress on Levels of Self-Efficacy

    Sexually abused children often develop posttraumatic stress disorder, a distressing and potentially debilitating condition that renders children to feelings of helplessness. Past studies have explored these effects in adults concerning sexual abuse, health issues, war, and natural disaster but not much research has been done for children. This study examined childhood sexual abuse, PTSD, and the relation that exists with self-efficacy. Thirty-nine children, 7 males and 32 females, participated in the study. The ages ranged from age eight through age eighteen, with a mean age of 12.5. Each participant was tested for levels of PTSD, using the Trauma Check list for Children, and for levels of Self-Efficacy, using The General Self-Efficacy. It was found that a negative relation existed between levels of PTSD and Self-Efficacy. Implications from this study were that the effects of sexual abuse and the subsequent development of PTSD have the same negative relation with self-efficacy in children as in adults. It is speculated that there is a need to develop therapeutic approaches to lower levels of PTSD and raise levels of self-efficacy in children

    This paper provides an application of the Black-Litterman methodology to portfolio management in a global setting. The novel feature of this paper relative to the extant literature on Black-Litterman methodology is that we use GARCH-derived views as an input into the Black-Litterman model. The returns on our portfolio surpass those of portfolios that rely on market equilibrium weights or Markowitz-optimal allocations. We thereby illustrate how the Black-Litterman model can be put to work in designing global investment strategie

    Preferred Coaching Behaviors of Male and Female Basketball Players: Gender and Level of Competition

    The purpose of this study was to investigate similarities and differences in coaching preferences among male and female basketball players based on gender and level of competition. Participants were 20 male and female basketball programs (2 NCAA Division I Teams, 4 High School Teams, and 4 Middle School Teams). The ages of the players ranged between 12 -24 years of age, with males and females having a comparable age distribution. The instrument used to collect data was the revised Leadership Scale for Sports (LSS) athlete preference version (Zhang & Jensen, 1997). The results of the statistical analyses using a two (gender - male and female) by 3 (level of competition - Middle School, High School and College) ANOVA with a Scheffe post hoc analysis demonstrated that statistically significant differences in preferred coaching behaviors did occur depending on gender, level of competition, and the interaction of gender and level of competition

    County jails have faced a high employee turnover problem for some time. For this study, five county jails were surveyed to determine the predominant predictors for turnover. This county government environment includes management problems not often found In a typical corporate scenario. Certain predictors for turnover are under the control of the sheriff, the government, and the economy. It was concluded that the most important variables a managing sheriff can actually control include communication of genuine interest, realistic promotion opportunities and the full use of employee skills

    A Study of Running Injury Rates in College Age Track Athletes

    Emerson S.E. A Study of Running Injury Rates in College Age Track Athlete’s. 2006. One hundred and twenty college age track athletes filled out a questionnaire on running and injuries. A 4-page questionnaire consisting of 33 questions divided in four sections: personal, activity, presence of a current injury, and injury history. Of the 120 athletes, 43 claimed they were currently injured, while 56 had suffered an injury within the previous 12 months. The most significant factors associated with a current running injury was having a previous injury within the past 12 months (.004) and running mileage (.027). The knee was the most common injury site reported in the study. This finding was similar to that of other reported studies

    Drag reduction characteristics in straight and coiled tubing — An experimental study

    An excessive friction pressure loss due to the small tubing diameter and curvature (which is believed to cause secondary flow) of Coiled Tubing (CT) often limits the maximum obtainable fluid flow rate in most CT operations. Good drag reduction property becomes a desirable quality for drilling, completion and workover fluids for CT applications. Yet, the drag reduction phenomenon in coiled tubing has not been well understood. This paper presents an experimental study of drag reduction performance of commonly used drag reducing agent, high molecular weight, anionic, AMPS copolymer (Nalco ASP-820) in straight and coiled tubing. The flow loop used consisted of three 1/2-in. OD coiled tubing reels with curvature ratios of 0.01, 0.019, and 0.031. A 1/2-in. OD, 10-ft straight section was also included to compare the drag reduction behavior between straight and coiled tubing. Various concentrations of drag reducing fluid were tested. The optimum concentration was then determined from the results of drag reduction exhibited by the fluid. The differential pressure versus flow rate data were reduced in terms of Fanning friction factor and solvent Reynolds number for estimating drag reduction characteristics. The results show that the drag reduction in coiled tubing are significantly lower than in straight tubing. As curvature ratio increases, the drag reduction decreases. A new drag reduction envelope (which is parallel to the Virk\u27s envelope for drag reduction in straight pipes) is proposed to evaluate the essential characteristics of drag reduction in coiled tubing. The test data plotted on this new envelope clearly show the delayed onset of drag reduction and the effects of curvature and polymer concentration on drag reduction. Presently, the correlations for accurately predicting drag reduction characteristics of a commonly used drag reducing fluid in coiled tubing are non-existent. In this study, new drag reduction correlations are developed that can be used for the engineering design of coiled tubing hydraulics. The correlations are also evaluated using the experimental data from full-scale coiled tubing flow experiments and results showed the good agreement with the predictions from the developed correlations
