Semivariance decomposition of country-level returns
No full textA methodology for decomposing the below-mean semivariance into systematic and unsystematic components is introduced. The decomposition of variance and semivariance of asset returns is presented for forty-four country-level indexes. The proportion of risk explained for country-level returns in the Downside CAPM framework is higher than in the CAPM framework. On average for all markets, global systematic risk, as a proportion of total risk, is 42% in the CAPM and 56% in the Downside CAPM. A strong role for semivariance and downside beta is found in explaining the cross-section of country returns. Although skew is highly correlated to semivariance, no cross-sectional confirmation of the role of skew as a priced risk or in explaining the downside risk is identified

When the Therapist is Homosexual: An Examination of Therapeutic Outcome Satisfaction
Get PDFThis study investigated the relationship between client satisfaction and therapist sexuality. The current literature had little or no research on the topic. This article defines psychotherapy, noted that most clients perceived psychotherapy was beneficial, and found research stating therapists should consider all ethical implications when working with clients, particularly in regard to how influential therapist can be on their clients. A questionnaire packet was given to participants, and they were asked to complete: a demographic page, and a vignette that included gender and sexuality of therapist, along with a hypothetical treatment plan, a modified version of the CSQ-8 (Attkisson,1977/2011) which measured satisfaction of the hypothetical therapy, and the Homophobia Scale (Wright, 1999), which measured homophobia of participants. Participants included 80 (male = 41, female = 39) college aged students. The results indicated that males appeared to be more homophobic than females. Males and females scored within the same range on the modified CSQ-8. Indicating that sexuality of therapist did not affect the satisfaction of therapy. Further research with a larger, non college population is recommended
A Funny Thing About Marriage
Get PDFThe purpose of the present study was to examine the relationship between marital satisfaction and the use of humor, and to investigate whether or not this relationship was influenced by the length of marriage. I also examined how humor was appreciated as the couples were married longer and who produced the most humor; the husband or the wife. It was hypothesized that marital satisfaction would be highest among married couples who use higher levels of humor, that couples who had been married longer would have a greater appreciation of humor, and that the male partner would produce the most humor in the relationship. Results revealed no significant relationship between marital satisfaction and humor. Results also indicated that greater appreciation of humor was not related to the length of marriage. Finally, there was a significant difference in the production of humor in a relationship. That is, males seem to produce more humor than females in marital relationships. The study of marital satisfaction, as it relates to humor, provides us with a better understanding of how humor may affect married couples and this understanding may lead to better communication between couples and decrease divorce
Keeping Marriage in the Black: Exploring the Effects of Budgeting and Money Management on Marital Satisfaction

The Marital Satisfaction Inventory-Revised and a series of researcher-created questions were given to 109 married people to ascertain financial behaviors as they relate to marital satisfaction in the marriage. The current research shows that there was no significant difference found between marital satisfaction scores on MSI-R and financial behaviors; however, there was much information to be gained that shows that there may be some relationship between marital satisfaction and financial behaviors. The current research indicates that there may be some relationship between communication skills and good financial practices in a marriage, although no significant relationships were established. This study was intended to enhance awareness of financial issues in marriages for professionals. In addition, it hopes to encourage helping professionals to become knowledgeable in financial matters as they relate to marital satisfaction, so that they are properly equipped to deal with one of the major factors in marital discord and divorce
Designing HVAC Systems Using Particle Swarm Optimization
No full textMany design and operating goals in heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems are optimization problems. For example, building operators want to determine the combination of equipment and set points that obtain the most energy efficient operating conditions. Similarly, HVAC system designers want to determine the best combination of equipment, components and operating conditions that provide minimum lifecycle cost. In both problems, the goal is to find an optimal set of system design variables.
The purpose of this work is to apply a relatively recent optimization technique known as particle swarm optimization (PSO) to the design and operation of HVAC systems. This algorithm is based on the idea of swarms of animals, such as flying birds or insects, searching for food. In these swarms, each member gains knowledge from the whole and in turn contributes his individual knowledge back to the swarm. The result is a very efficient way to find the best available food source. The PSO algorithm is well suited to computers with multiple processors and to HVAC problems because it does not require continuous or well behaved mathematical functions. Another advantage of the method is that it is remarkably simple to implement. This paper illustrates the PSO algorithm by applying it to the design of an HVAC piping system

The Effect of Gender Role and Males\u27 Attitudes Toward Receiving Mental Health Therapy
Get PDFThe purpose of this research study was to build upon previous research pertaining to gender role and young adult male attitudes towards receiving mental health therapy. An additional purpose of the study was to explore the relationship between media exposure and attitude toward mental health therapy. The first hypothesis was that there would be a positive correlation between gender role scores and attitudes with the BEM Sex- Role Inventory (BSRI) and with scores on attitudes with the Attitudes Towards Seeking Professional Psychological Help Scale (ATSPPHS) in young adult males. The second hypothesis was that young adult males who watched a video of a cognitive therapy session would have a positive attitude towards seeking mental health treatment as predicted by Buckley and Malouff s (2005) research study. The participants included 46 young adult males. All participants were students enrolled in undergraduate courses at a university in West Texas. The findings showed there was no statistically significant relationship between gender roles and attitudes among young adult males. There was an unexpected finding in the control group; participants who scored high on the masculinity trait as measured by the BSRI survey scored low on the stigma tolerance factor as measured by the ATSPPHS survey
Coaching Versus Family: The Consequences of the Work-Family Conflict Among Male Collegiate Head Coaches
Get PDFResearchers have shown that coaches experience burnout due to role conflict, role ambiguity, and work-family conflicts (Kelley & Baghurst, 2009). The demands of being a coach are many. When a coach has a spouse and children, a work-family conflict can develop. Work-family conflict in coaching is created when the coach cannot effectively balance the time and attention demands for both the job and home. Naturally, consequences arise as a result of this conflict. The purpose of this study was to better understand what consequences exist in the lives of male, collegiate head coaches and to provide suggestions for effectively managing a balance between coaching and family. A semi-structured interview utilized 8 male head coaches at various collegiate levels. Themes discussed in the interview involved what stressors each coach encounters due to work-family conflict, how each coach responds to those stressors, what perceived consequences of work-family conflict exist, and what each coach suggests for managing work-family conflict
