This project was designed to lead families in First Baptist Church of For Payne, Alabama (FBCFP), to participate in orphan care through local foster care and adoption. The leadership process began by assessing how members of FBCFP understood their theological role and responsibility in caring for orphans. Next, church members were equipped for caring for orphans through a five-week teaching series. At the end of the series, church members were given “next steps” for either becoming foster or adoptive parents or for ministering to the families who become foster or adoptive families.
Chapter 1 introduces the ministry context of FBCFP, along with the rationale, purpose, goals, research methodologies, definitions, and delimitations of the project. Chapter 2 provides a biblical and theological foundation for orphan care ministry. Chapter 3 provides a practical and theoretical basis for church-based orphan care ministries. Chapter 4 describes the development and implementation of the project. Chapter 5 provides evaluation of the project and its goals, suggestions for improvements, and further reflection

By studying the New Testament’s teaching on the second coming of Christ, this thesis demonstrates that preachers should preach with urgency because of the imminence of Christ’s return. The second coming of Christ is motivation to preach with urgency due to its warning of judgment to the unconverted and the offer of comfort and eternal reward to the Christ-follower.
The first chapter addresses introductory material, revealing the need for urgent preaching in the modern era and the lack of literature on the subject. Chapter 2 describes the New Testament’s teaching on the imminence of the second advent, and why this is relevant to preaching with urgency. Chapter 3 explains what is to occur at the parousia, detailing the judgment for all humanity, the eternal repercussions that follow, and how this correlates to preaching in earnest. Chapter 4 connects preaching with the return of Jesus by analyzing the apostle Paul’s words in 2 Timothy 4. Finally, chapter 5 addresses the implications for the church, explaining the need for all preachers to preach with urgency and includes a summons to do so
Transforming Mission Culture In Church Revitalization: A Mixed Methods Study
Get PDFThe North American church is on the edge of a precipice. The majority of churches are in need of revitalization. As churches turn inward and focus on their own personal preference, needs, and spiritual growth the church loses sight of their partnership and fellowship in the missio Dei. How can individual church leaders turn their congregants toward outward ministry and reignite their connection with the missio Dei in a way that grows individual believers and revitalizes the local church? The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between mission culture and church revitalization. Phase 1 of the study identified growing, declining and plateaued churches. In phase 2, churches that met the criteria for revitalization were invited to participate in a survey related to their experiences. In phase 3, select churches that identified mission culture as a significant influence on their revitalization participated in interviews. The study identified key factors on how the revitalized churches transformed mission culture in their church. The study also identified implications for church leaders and churches. Finally, research applications are discussed for church leaders and churches desiring revitalization
The Centrality of the Church Covenant among Early Separate Baptists on the New York Frontier
Get PDFThe Separate Baptists who settled New York in the 1780s came from New England. They were both Calvinistic and missions minded. A shortage of pastors necessitated a strong congregational framework and associational ties with other Baptist churches. Many churches were organized without a pastor. These believers, who were settling the newly cleared wilderness, covenanted together in a church relation. The church covenant was not only the instrument to establish a church, but it was also used to sustain its life, as believers covenanted together to provide watch-care over each other. This thesis shows how their congregational polity was exercised in their monthly covenant and conference meetings in which the church covenant was an essential building block. This paper hopes to sound a voice from the past that introduces into current Baptist thinking another model of governance and polity to consider, one used by our Particular Baptist forebearers, in addition to the Presbyterian model prevalent today

Chapter 1 explores the context of ministry at Graefenburg Baptist Church while determining the need for the stated project, as well as the goals and methodology to achieve success.
Chapter 2 provides the biblical and theological foundation for plural eldership in the church today by describing the establishment, qualifications, and duties of eldership in the earliest New Testament churches.
Chapter 3 examines the theoretical and practical issues with plural eldership in Baptist churches by demonstrating the presence of plural eldership throughout Baptist history and its compatibility with a congregational form of government.
Chapter 4 describes the implementation of the ministry project and includes statistical results as well as interpretation of various results within the project.
Chapter 5 presents an assessment of the project purpose, goals, strengths, and weaknesses of the project, and concludes with theological and personal reflections
The Spirit-Led Preaching of Charles H. Spurgeon
Get PDFPh.D., The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, 2020This dissertation centers on the role the Holy Spirit played in the pulpit ministry of Charles Haddon Spurgeon. It argues that Spurgeon was a Spirit-led preacher by examining six criteria of the Holy Spirit’s ministry for preaching is intentionally and explicitly identified as discussed by Greg Heisler in his book Spirit-Led Preaching. These criteria include the following: (1) the inspiration of the text, (2) the illumination of the preacher studying the text, (3) the conviction of the message, (4) the empowerment of the preacher, (5) the Spirit’s Christological witness, and (6) Spirit-filled living. This forms a more complete picture of the cause and nature of Spurgeon’s massive success. Some attention is given to the life of Spurgeon as one that was Spirit-led. Consideration is also provided for how Spurgeon might serve as a model for a modern preaching ministry. The scope of this research is a survey of the Holy Spirit’s influence on Spurgeon’s pulpit ministry by way of his sermons, published writings, lectures, and letters. Evaluating the Legacy Program of the Mighty Oaks Foundation: A Mixed-Method Study
Get PDFPh.D., The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, 2020Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder is a serious diagnosis that plagues many men and women who have served in the United States military. With high veteran suicide rates, an overwhelmed VA system, and a host of treatments that are often ineffective; it is important to find affordable and effective alternative treatment options. Additionally, there is a growing recognition that spirituality plays a key role struggle of PTSD and therefore must play a role in its treatment. The Mighty Oaks Foundation has developed multiple programs that are designed to help men and women struggling with PTSD as well as their spouses and families. The flagship program of Mighty Oaks is the Legacy Program, a week-long residential, peer-to-peer, faith-based treatment program. This dissertation employs a variety of research methods in order to assess the effectiveness of the Legacy Program for men.
Chapter 1 describes the purpose for the current study, lists research questions that will be addressed by the research. This chapter also offers delimitations to the research and provides a procedural overview of the research that was conducted.
Chapter 2 reviews the precedent literature relating to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. This provides an overview of the history of PTSD, various treatments available for PTSD and studies to determine their effectiveness. This chapter also offers insights from biblical counseling literature on the topic of PTSD.
Chapter 3 gives an overview of the Mighty Oaks Foundation. It recounts the history of the ministry, describes its philosophy, and reviews the content of the Legacy Program for Men.
Chapter 4 outlines the methodology of the research undertaken in this dissertation. It includes a restatement of research questions and how each will be addressed in the research. Information on the population studied, instrumentation, and research procedures used are also covered in this chapter.
Chapter 5 provides an analysis of the findings. The quantitative pre/post-test study demonstrated that attendance at the Legacy Program reduces one’s PTSD symptoms and results in an increase in one’s faith. The correlation between these two changes was not demonstrated to a clinically significant degree by the data. The retrospective alumni survey also provided insights into what components were seen as beneficial by participants.
Chapter 6 offers conclusions drawn from the data gathered in the research. Recommendations for implementing this type of program are made and areas for further research are also proposed

Reading the Twelve as a compositional unity sets the biblical-theological stage for examining how the Twelve advances the theme of the kingdom of God. The kingdom of God in the Twelve is examined through the lens of four kingdom sub-themes: Davidic kingship, exile and second exodus, covenant, and the day of the Lord. After investigating each sub-theme within the Twelve, New Testament citations of the Twelve is explored, seeking to ascertain how the authors read, interpreted, and applied the kingdom of God in the Twelve to their literary context
The Influence of Harold Best's Music through the Eyes of Faith and Unceasing Worship on Select Worship Authors and Educators
Get PDFPh.D., The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, 2020This dissertation examines the impact of Harold Best’s Music through the Eyes of Faith (1993) and Unceasing Worship: Biblical Perspectives on Worship and the Arts (2003) on seven representative worship authors and educators. Through interviews and close examination of their writings, lectures, and philosophies, the impact of Best’s primary arguments is traced. His main positions are (1) that human creativity is rooted in the doctrines of common grace and the creation of humankind in the imago Dei, (2) that worship (which is either biblical or idolatrous) is an inherent activity of all humans, and (3) that music is amoral, a premise upon which he builds his advocacy of musical pluralism in worship and in the Christian life.
Following the introduction to the research problem in chapter 1, chapter 2 presents an overview of the leading philosophies of music from both secular and Christian thinkers between 1940 and c. 1990 as a backdrop against which to view Best’s own philosophy of music, worship, and the arts. A survey of the evangelical worship landscape is offered in chapter 3, highlighting major changes in worship philosophy and praxis in the 1940s on through the 1990s. Chapter 4 contains a professional biography of Best, noting specific experiences that influenced the development and articulation of his thought, with reference to Nyack College, Wheaton College, the National Association of Schools of Music, colleagues, and his work as a composer.
An exposition and critique of Best’s books is offered in chapter 5. Through interviews and close examination of their writings, chapter 6 traces the impact of Best’s books on seven representative worship authors and educators: Bob Kauflin, Barry Liesch, David Music, Michael Card, Mike Cosper, D. Clark Measels, and Joseph Crider. Chapter 7 concludes the dissertation summarizing the main areas of Best’s impact
