Equipping Members of Hope in Christ Bible Church in Berkley, Michigan, to Be Zealous for Good Deeds
Get PDFThis project features the indispensable priority of ministers of the Word equipping their members in being more zealous for good deeds. The undergirding presupposition is that this is accomplished most effectively by expository preaching and application of the Word, specifically from the book of Titus. The opening chapter provides a context that affirms the paramount importance of zeal for good deeds being pursued for the glory of God in a local church. Chapter 2 lays out the biblical and theological foundation for a life that is zealous for good deeds based on the entire book of Titus. Chapter 3 then focuses on particular areas of good deeds every church should be pursuing, both in and outside the church context. Chapter 4 details the process of the entire project from beginning to end. The project culminates in an overall assessment of the Zealous for Good Deeds project in chapter 5
Dwelling with God: Psalms 120-134 for Indonesian Worship
Get PDFThis ministry project seeks to discover the biblical and theological significance of Psalms 120-134 and provide suggestions for their use in Indonesian worship. Chapter 1 introduces the Indonesian context and the rationale, purpose, goals, methodology, limitations, and delimitations. Chapter 2 provides the biblical and theological foundation. Although the pilgrimage theme may be present, there is a greater theme: the restoration, renewal, and blessings from God dwelling among His people. Chapter 3 elaborates the canonical, historical, theocentric, Christocentric, eschatological, and devotional reading used in this project. It also proposes the psalm guided worship based on Psalms 120-134 as a paradigm for worship. Chapter 4 describes the Indonesian Church in its religious context, results of the survey, and recommendations to improve the use of psalms in corporate worship. Chapter 5 concludes with an evaluation of the project’s purpose and goals, strengths and weaknesses, theological and personal reflections, and suggestions for improvement

No full textThe purpose of this project was to develop and implement a pastoral leadership course at Seven Oaks Church of Christ in Mayfield, Kentucky for present and future elders. Chapter 1 explains the ministerial context of Seven Oaks Church of Christ and demonstrates the need for a pastoral leadership course for training present elders and future elder candidates. Chapter 2 demonstrates that Scripture reveals that God calls a plurality of men to shepherd his local church for their protection and productivity. Chapter 3 surveys three leadership models used in churches concluding that the plural, pastoral leadership model is biblical and effective, while free from the autocratic, authoritarian, legalistic tendencies of the other two. Chapter 4 provides a detailed process along with the methodology utilized for this project’s implementation. Chapter 5 is an evaluation of this project demonstrating this project was effective in training present and future elders at the Seven Oaks Church of Christ

A Study on The Significance of Jesus' Pronouncement of The Seven Woes and Laments in Matthew 23
Get PDFMatthean commentators have often conducted extensive textual, linguistic, and grammatical analysis about the oracles of the seven woes in Matthew 23. Moreover, we have discovered that the majority of the Matthean scholars offer thorough theological interpretation and careful exegesis along with the Greek text in Matthew 23. Nevertheless, much of the theological analysis and discussions are far too brief to highlight the significance of the comprehensive flow of thought between the oracles of the seven woes and Jesus’ lamentation in Matthew 23. They often overemphasize the individual woes, and thus their discussions underline little comprehensive flow of thought in Matthew 23. Neither commentators’ nor scholars’ discussions are adequately satisfying in addressing the significance of the seven woes and laments in Matthew 23. The interpretation of the Pharisaic hypocrisy is inconsistent with the entire Matthean context (cf. Matt 5:48; 19:21; 22:37-40; 23:13-36). For this specific reason, particular attention, and careful research upon the oracles of the seven woes, Jesus’ lamentation, and reconsideration of the Matthean interpretation of the Pharisaic hypocrisy is essential. Hence, the purpose of this study, primarily, is to discuss the significance of the seven woes and laments in Matthew 23 which conveys two core messages: First, a severity of warning (Matt 23:13-36; cf. 23:1-12); second, an invitation to life – redemption and salvation (Matt 23:37-39). Secondarily, we hope to perform a scrupulous examination to evaluate the difference and common significance (or the intersection point of significance) between and within the oracles of the seven woes and laments. Thirdly, we are committed to observe a closer Matthean interpretation of the Pharisaic hypocrisy in Matthew 23
The Formative Wisdom of the "Bread of Life" Discourse

This provocative thesis statement defines the purpose of Jeffrey de Waal Dryden’s book, "A Hermeneutic of Wisdom" and drives its content forward in terms of telos, ethical trajectory, and moral goal. After the introduction, and within the first part of this thesis project, I will condense the contents of the book into a conceptual framework by showing the characteristics and convictions of wisdom hermeneutics.In the second part of the project, I will situate the contribution of Dryden’s book within the larger discussion of wisdom hermeneutics and its application to narrative and epistolary texts. N. T. Wright and Richard B. Hays will be the main conversation partners, along with Dryden, in this section.
The third section deals with the practical application of narrative hermeneutics to the "Bread of Life" Discourse found in John 6:25 71. Here we discern the key elements of each approach highlighted in part two of the project through a synthesis of narrative hermeneutic methods. This final section will also develop a proposal derived from John's Gospel, brought into contact with Dryden, Wright, and Hays

Chapter 3 considers small group leaders as good coaches. It defines and shows the importance of coaching, providing the process of and principles for coaching from various perspectives. It gives biblical examples of coaching, such as the coaching of Moses by Jethro, of Joshua by Moses, and of Paul by Barnabas.
Chapter 4 explains the project outline and gives detailed information about how to implement it.

Chapter 2 provides an exegesis of Acts 17:16-34, where Paul employs apologetic arguments in Athens. Chapter 3 presents the blessings given to the listeners through apologetic illustrations in preaching. Chapter 5 evaluates the efficacy of the project based on completion of the specified goals. Wingfield Scott Watson and His Struggle to Preserve the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Strangite) After the Death of Its Founder
Get PDFPh. D., Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, 2021Wingfield S. Watson (1828–1922) was a fiercely loyal apologist for the Mormon prophet James J. Strang, a successor to Joseph Smith. In the aftermath of the succession crisis that followed Smith’s unexpected death, Strang attracted hundreds of converts to his theocratic commune on Beaver Island in Lake Michigan, Watson being one of them. After Strang’s own untimely death, Watson stepped forward from among his religious community as a Strangite apologist to ensure that Strangite distinctives of Latter Day Saint restorationism would survive the unstoppable decline of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Strangites) due to internal dissension and external opposition. From primary documents, this dissertation demonstrates that Watson succeeded at maintaining the Strangite identity among its remnant after the death of its founder
Developing the New Baptist Catechism for Use at First Baptist Church of Farmington, Michigan
Get PDFThis project seeks to consider the history of catechism use in Baptist churches and then develop and utilize a New Baptist Catechism for use at First Baptist Church of Farmington, Michigan. Chapter 1 presents the history and ministry context of FBCF and the goals of this project. Chapter 2 considers the biblical rationale for the use and implementation of a catechism by considering Paul’s call to pursue “sound doctrine” and grow in discernment in the pastoral epistles, which is supported by the Old Testament exhortations to know, fear, and love God (Prov 6:6-9; Deut 6:1-9). Chapter 3 explores the history of catechetical instruction in Baptist churches providing a historical-theological analysis of why most Baptists stopped using catechisms by the turn of the twentieth century. Chapter 4 describes the process of composing the New Baptist Catechism as well as its implementation at FBCF. Chapter 5 evaluates the efficacy of the project based on the stated goals. Even though contained only in an appendix, the crowning achievement of the project is the composition of the New Baptist Catechism (appendix 1)
