Foreign Language Acquisition Among Children With Down Syndrome: A Precedent Study for Christian Schools

    Get PDF
Children with Down syndrome (DS) are largely excluded from the foreign language (FL) classroom, and no research exists documenting their abilities to learn a FL. Research is needed to demonstrate the abilities of children with DS to learn a FL so that they might be included in the FL classroom along with their typically developing peers and be afforded the same benefits of learning a second language. This exploratory mixed methods multiple case study is the first to document the participation of elementary-aged children with DS with and without a comorbid diagnosis of autism in a FL class and to measure the receptive and expressive lexical acquisition of Spanish as a FL in students with DS. In the first phase, students underwent a six-week Spanish intervention. In the second phase, vocabulary assessments based off of the Spanish intervention curriculum were developed, and in the third phase, participants were assessed on their expressive and receptive Spanish vocabulary using standardized assessments and the instrumentation developed in stage 2. All students demonstrated measurable evidence of Spanish vocabulary acquisition, with receptive acquisition exceeding expressive, and exposure to a FL did not appear to impact L1 vocabulary development. Students with a dual diagnosis of autism did not differ significantly from their peers with DS only in acquisition. Additionally, L1 receptive ability, performance on a nonword repetition task, maternal education, and L1 expressive ability were found to significantly correlate with FL acquisition. Finally, the qualitative and quantitative data was combined to provide an overall language acquisition profile of each child who participated in the multiple case study. Implications for children with DS, FL teachers, school administrators and other professionals, and Christian schools are discussed

    Get PDF
This descriptive study explored the differences and similarities between Christian and secular universities’ approaches to educating and developing ethical business leaders for work in the marketplace. This study used a qualitative content analysis to analyze and compare published curriculum descriptions of Master of Business Administration (MBA) programs at select Christian and secular higher educational institutions.A review of the precedent literature presented the foundations for Christian education in ethical business leadership. A literature review was also conducted on the current state of business leadership in the United States and the secular approach to business ethics education. This allowed the business leadership curriculum to be approached from a comparative standpoint, assessing ethical themes, specific topics, and level of emphasis in the approach taken to develop ethical business leaders. The results of the study revealed the distribution of the MBA program’s general themes, specific topics, and the level of emphasis placed in each category. This research found increased levels of ethics, ethical decision-making, ethical awareness, and character development content in the required MBA program coursework at Christian universities. Furthermore, secular universities placed nearly all their decision-making emphasis on the use of analytics and quantitative considerations. Meanwhile, Christian universities included ethical considerations in their coursework associated with decision-making

“Very Tender and Earnest in Prayer”: Andrew Fuller, a Man of Prayer

    Get PDF
This dissertation argues that Andrew Fuller (1754–1815) serves as a model for spirituality, and particularly in the practice of prayer. His life as a husband, father, pastor, missionary society leader, and theologian brings together a valuable example to be retrieved for the contemporary church. This dissertation distinguishes itself in Fuller studies by being the first study of its kind to provide an inductive study of Fuller’s practice of prayer in all aspects of his life, relying on his published and yet-to-be published writings. Therefore, this dissertation does not impose contemporary, systematic categories onto Fuller’s life as a means of discerning his theology of prayer. This study displays Fuller as a man of prayer within his culture, context, and theological tradition. Chapter 2 surveys the practice of prayer within the Particular Baptist tradition to provide context to Fuller’s background and heritage. Chapter 3 summarizes Fuller’s practice and theology of prayer displayed in his diary and his yet-to-be-published letters. Next, chapter 4 discusses the towering impact of Jonathan Edwards (1703–1758) on both Fuller and the Particular Baptist tradition, particularly as it relates to corporate prayer. Then, in chapters 5 and 6, Fuller’s published writings are surveyed, first, by looking at some of his major theological works and then, his sermons, to show his practice and theology of prayer. Chapter 7 concludes bringing together the various aspects of Fuller’s life and ministry to show him to be a humble man of prayer and an example worth following

Addressing the Weight of Caring for Souls and the Troubled Heart of the Pastor Through Biblical Counseling

    Get PDF
This thesis addresses how a pastor who is under a holy calling from God to guard his flock as well as his life and doctrine will sometimes find himself weary and isolated in the process. In times like these, he must gauge his need for personal care and know where to turn in difficult times. In this contemporary age self-care has become a mode of care many have turned to. While it is not unhealthy to self-care, this thesis argues that secular self-care models are inadequate for the total care of the pastor. The pastor, under the unique burden of ministry, must turn to one-another care in the church for the complete care of his soul. This thesis argues that in each area of his ministry, the pastor would be wise to look to an older or long-tenured pastor for guidance in certain seasons of life to guard his heart from becoming troubled. When faithfulness to the biblical model of one-another care is present in the pastor’s life his heart can find the care it needs in difficult times. So that he can live a life of faithfulness in his calling of guarding his heart and guarding his flock
