Environmental and geographical drivers of reef fish beta diversity across the depth gradient

    No full text
The swift decline of coral reefs stands out as a significant biodiversity challenge confronting our generation, and mesophotic coral ecosystems (MCEs; reefs between 30 and 150 m) have been proposed as refuge habitats that may be less affected by climate change and human impacts compared to their shallow counterparts. However, MCEs are often distinct from shallow reefs, and studies assessing how marine biodiversity changes along the depth gradient and what factors can influence marine communities in MCEs are still scarce. Here, we conducted underwater visual censuses to evaluate how fish assemblages change among islands and environmental characteristics across the shallow to mesophotic depth gradient within the Cabo Verde Archipelago. Our results show that the beta diversity of reef fish assemblages was mainly driven by depth and environmental factors such as temperature and benthic variables. A consistent trend of increasing beta diversity from the shallow to the lower mesophotic zone was observed among the islands, with the lowest variation in species composition observed between the shallow (5-30 m) and upper (31-60 m) mesophotic depths. Lower species richness and higher turnover was observed within lower MCEs (61-85 m), suggesting saturation in fish richness at small scales, possibly a result of changes in microhabitat heterogeneity. Furthermore, the effect of geography was negligible, and local-scale environment characteristics were the main drivers of differences in species assemblages. Evidence suggests that increased fishing pressure on the most populated island may reduce the biogeographic influence on fish assemblages across the archipelago.2019/24215-2; 2021/07039-6

Repercussions of restaurant corporate social responsibility on positive emotions, memorable experiences and eWOM

    No full text
This study endeavours to (1) evaluate the impacts of consumers’ perceptions regarding the corporate social responsibility (CSR) practices of casual dining restaurants on their memorable experiences (ME); (2) assess the impacts of consumers’ perceptions regarding the CSR practices of casual dining restaurants on their positive emotions; (3) explore the mediating effect of consumers’ positive emotions in the relationship between CSR and ME; (4) examine the impacts of ME on electronic word-of-mouth (eWOM) and (5) investigate whether consumer behavioural engagement on social networking sites (CBE-SNS) moderates the relationship between ME and eWOM. Design/methodology/approach This survey included 394 casual dining restaurant consumers in Portugal. The hypothetical model, grounded in the stimulus-organism-response theory (S-O-R) proposed by Mehrabian and Russell (1974), was evaluated employing partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM). Findings The results demonstrated that restaurants’ CSR (stimulus) directly and positively impacts consumers’ ME and positive emotions (organism). Positive emotions mediate the relationship between restaurants’ CSR and consumers’ ME. Memorable consumer experiences directly and positively impact eWOM (response). Finally, CBE-SNS moderates the relationship between ME and eWOM. Originality/value This study uniquely elucidates the relationships among CSR, positive emotions, ME, CBE-SNS and eWOM within casual dining restaurants. Restaurants can use CSR as a stimulus to affect consumers’ positive emotions and ME (organism), generating repercussions on eWOM. Moreover, ME positively influences eWOM. However, CBE-SNS is crucial to establish strategies for distinct consumer profiles, which would increase the impact on eWOM. This study contributes to the S-O-R and provides practical implications for restaurant owners, managers, marketing professionals and policymakers in the food service sector.UIDB/04011/202

Psychometric examination of the proposed specifiers for conduct disorder self-report (PSCD) among an adult community sample from Brazil

    No full text
The Proposed Specifiers for Conduct Disorder (PSCD) is a promising novel scale that measures psychopathic traits and includes an additional conduct disorder factor that taps the antisocial dimension of psychopathy. The current study sought to broaden the application of PSCD by examining the factor structure, convergent and discriminant validity, and connections to delinquency in a young adult sample ( N = 450; M = 31.91 years, SD = 13.02 years) obtained from the Brazilian community. Participants completed a self-report version of the PSCD along with other theoretically meaningful psychometric measures. Results supported a four-factor intercorrelated factor structure, with male participants scoring significantly higher than female participants on the PSCD total, grandiose-manipulative (GM), callous-unemotional (CU), daring-impulsive (DI), and conduct disorder (CD) factors. The four factors of the PSCD mainly presented positive, moderate to high significant inter-correlations and adequate reliability. The convergent validity with measures of the dark tetrad of personality, difficulties in emotion regulation, and self-reported delinquency also revealed positive moderate significant associations. Our findings support the use of the PSCD as a promising short, time-effective self-report measure of psychopathic traits in young adults.UIDB/00730/2020; 2022.07928.CEECIND/CP1714/CT002

Dynamic behavior of the glassy and supercooled liquid states of Aceclofenac assessed by dielectric and calorimetric techniques

    Get PDF
Aceclofenac (ACF), a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, was obtained in its amorphous state by cooling from melt. The glass transition was investigated using dielectric and calorimetric techniques, namely, dielectric relaxation spectroscopy (DRS), thermally stimulated depolarization currents (TSDC), and conventional and temperaturemodulated differential scanning calorimetry (DSC and TM-DSC). The dynamic behavior in both the glassy and supercooled liquid states revealed multiple relaxation processes. Well below the glass transition, DRS was able to resolve two secondary relaxations, γ and β, the latter of which was also detectable by TSDC. The kinetic parameters indicated that both processes are associated with localized motions within the molecule. The main (α) relaxation was clearly observed by DRS and TSDC, and results from both techniques confirmed a non-Arrhenian temperature dependence of the relaxation times. However, the glass transition temperature (Tg) extrapolated from DRS data significantly differed from that obtained via TSDC, which in turn showed reasonable agreement with the calorimetric Tg (Tg-DSC = 9.2 ◦C). The values of the fragility index calculated by the three experimental techniques converged in attributing the character of a moderately fragile glass former to ACF. Above the α relaxation, TSDC showed a well-defined peak. In DRS, after “removing” the high-conductivity contribution using ε’ derivative analysis, a peak with shape parameters αHN = βHN = 1 was also detected. The origin of these peaks, found in the full supercooled liquid state, has been discussed in the context of structural and dynamic heterogeneity. This is supported by significant differences observed between the FTIR spectra of the amorphous and crystalline samples, which are likely related to aggregation differences resulting from variations in the hydrogen bonds between the two phases. Additionally, the pronounced decoupling between translational and relaxational motions, as deduced from the low value of the fractional exponent x = 0.72, derived from the fractional Debye–Stokes–Einstein (FDSE) relationship, further supports this interpretation.UIDP/00100/202

    No full text
(Arsawan, I. et al., 2021; Ming-Horng, W. and Chieh-yu, L., 2011; Yu, W., and Ramanathan, R. 2017; Gupta, H. and Barua, M., 2018) A região do Algarve, dada a sua singularidade geográfica, económica e cultural, desempenha um papel relevante no contexto nacional. This dissertation aims to analyze the alignment of companies in the Algarve region with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) established by the Agenda 2030, as well as to deepen the understanding of the meaning and relevance of these objectives within the broader business and socio-political context. The research seeks to assess the degree of adherence and commitment of Algarve companies to sustainability, using the fundamental principles of the Business Council for Sustainable Development (BCSD) Portugal and the Jornada 2030 as references, as highlighted in the report "Maturity of Companies in Sustainability - Aggregate Portrait 2022” (BCSD 2022). SMEs play a significant role in industrial environmental impact, constrained by financial, strategic, and technological limitations, as well as low network integration and external support. Assessing their sustainability maturity is therefore essential to identifying challenges and promoting sustainable practices (Arsawan, I. et al., 2021; Ming-Horng, W. and Chieh-yu, L., 2011; Yu, W., and Ramanathan, R. 2017; Gupta, H. and Barua, M., 2018). Given its geographical, economic, and cultural uniqueness, the Algarve region plays a relevant role in the national context. However, this region has not yet been analyzed in the BCSD Portugal study. Therefore, this dissertation proposes a comprehensive exploratory analysis of the maturity of Algarve companies concerning sustainability, applying methodologies similar to those used in the national study. To achieve this goal, this research establishes a series of specific steps: 1. Identification of private companies in the Algarve and sample selection. 2. Construction and application of a questionnaire survey adapted from the BCSD Portugal questionnaire to the selected companies. 3. Treatment and analysis of the collected data, using the transformation of dichotomous variables into means and percentages, and applying comparison charts. 4. Critical evaluation of the maturity of Algarve companies in terms of sustainability and their relation to the global goals of the Jornada 2030. 5. Comparison of the results obtained with those in the report "Maturity of Companies in Sustainability - Aggregate Portrait 2022, BCSD Portugal” and the goals set by the Jornada 2030. This analysis aims to fill a knowledge gap regarding corporate sustainability in the Algarve and contribute to the development of strategies and policies that will facilitate achieving the SDGs established in the 2030 Agenda. This, in turn, will enable a more sustainable future for the region and, consequently, for the country

Seaweed-derived biochar for effective treatment of dye-contaminated wastewater

    No full text
Freshwater scarcity is a growing concern, exacerbated by industrial effluents containing dyes and other pollutants that endanger aquatic ecosystems. This study explores the potential of biochar sorbents, derived from renewable seaweed biomass, as a sustainable solution for water decontamination. Seaweed biomass (sarga & ccedil;o), collected from Portuguese seashores, was carbonized at 300 degrees C and 400 degrees C to produce biochar. Adsorption experiments with methylene blue (MB) revealed that carbonization at 400 degrees C, followed by ball milling, significantly enhanced adsorption performance. Langmuir isotherm analysis demonstrated a maximum adsorption capacity of 500 mg MB/g sorbent for the optimized biochar (400 degrees C, ball milled), with adsorption efficiency improving at elevated temperatures and pH levels up to 12. Infrared reflectance spectra of fresh and post-adsorption biochars confirmed the involvement of pi-pi interactions and hydrogen bonding in the adsorption mechanism. These findings highlight the potential of seaweed-derived biochar as an effective and eco-friendly solution for water purification.FCT-UIDB/04028/2025; FCT-UIDP/04028/202

Exploring the relationship between daily sedentary time and occurrence of multimorbidity in middle-aged and older adults: results from ELSI-Brazil

    No full text
AimTo explore the relationship between varying durations of sedentary time (ST) in hours per day and multimorbidity, while considering covariates such as non-compliance to moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) recommendations, age, sex, and smoking in middle-aged and older adults.MethodsData from the first wave (2015-2016) of the nationally-representative Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Aging (ELSI-Brazil) were analyzed. Ordinary regression analysis was utilized to assess the odds ratio for individuals with varying daily ST durations concerning the escalation in the number of diseases while accounting for covariates such as failure to meet MVPA recommendations, age, sex, and smoking status.ResultsA cohort of 7,314 individuals aged 50-105 years (56,3% females) participated in the study. The most prevalent occurrence of multimorbidity was having 2 conditions (1521/19.3%). A clear trend emerges, showing a rise in the number of multimorbidities as ST increase. Notably, individuals engaging in less than 4 h of daily ST exhibited a significantly lower likelihood of experiencing an increase in the total number of multimorbidity cases, with an odds ratio of 0.842 and a confidence interval of 0.764 to 0.928, even after adjusting for potential covariables.ConclusionsOur findings indicate a progressive increase in multimorbidity with longer durations of ST. Moreover, limiting ST to less than 4 h daily was associated with a lower chance of multimorbidity.UIDP/00617/202

Beyond physical accessibility: a bibliometric analysis about the influence of digital communication and the use of technology on inclusive tourism in WCAG 3.0 era—tourism for all from a more accessible content perspective

    No full text
This study aims to analyze the impact of digital communication and the use of technology in tourism. It also evaluates how new digital and technological trends, such as mobile applications and emerging virtual or augmented reality technologies, can be applied to web pages. Information that is not accessible becomes another barrier for travelers with disabilities and does not contribute to the concept of "tourism for all." A bibliometric analysis through Web of Science (WoS) of published articles related to the influence of digital communication and the use of technology in tourism. A total of 290 articles were analysed using VOSviewer and SciMAT. The web accessibility does contemplate the regulations currently in force and therefore progress continues to be slow in this aspect. Also, technology together with new digital communication channels improve the experience of tourists and visitors to a destination, in turn impacting on their quality of life and enhancing "Tourism for all". Furthermore, it is determined that the "phygital" concept takes on special relevance since many studies are aimed at combining both dimensions so that if a space complies with accessibility regulations, they are also considered from the information point of view in its digital sphere. This study provides an evolution of digital accessibility from a technological and communicational perspective by combining two complementary analyses and allows us to understand tourist behavior from a more inclusive aspect. There are important gaps in other areas of study, especially focused on stakeholders' knowledge of the importance of making improvements in tourism for all

ALMA: Antropofagia, Literatura, Modernismo e Audiovisual

    No full text
