The mechanical and perfusion basis of exercise limitation in apical hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
Patients with apical hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (ApHCM) commonly suffer symptoms of chest pain and dyspnea. Apical hypertrophy causes cavity obliteration early in systole, persisting into diastole; generating high pressures and creating basal to apical heterogeny in myocardial deformation across the cardiac cycle.1 Conventional measures of systolic function (eg, ejection fraction [EF]) may be supranormal, but other parameters may be abnormal either globally (global longitudinal strain [GLS]),2 or apically (longitudinal, radial and circumferential strain, including twist).3 Cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) demonstrated that apical perfusion defects are a universal feature across the phenotypic spectrum.4 Reduced exercise capacity in HCM is widely reported; however, in ApHCM, functional limitation has been little explored, and the underpinning roles for abnormal myocardial mechanics and perfusion abnormalities are unknown. We hypothesized that patients with ApHCM would have functional limitation associated with abnormalities of global/regional myocardial mechanics (strain, twist) and myocardial blood flow (MBF).FS/17/82/3322
This master's thesis aimed to create, through the Mergin Maps application, a practical and efficient tool for field data collection. It is through QGIS that the projects are created and maintained and, together with Mergin Maps, allow data synchronization. Additionally, a spatial database was created. The selected case studies were the Faia Brava Private Protected Area, in the district of Guarda, and Maio Island, Cape Verde, through the activities of the Maio Biodiversity Foundation. The case studies made it possible to test and evaluate the capabilities of the mobile application in real field context, and to identify the potential of this QGIS | Mergin Maps solution. In the case of the Faia Brava Private Protected Area, the project created in QGIS for use with the Mergin Maps mobile application aimed to collect biodiversity observations. This digital solution is connected to a geospatial database, where all information is stored in a structured and organised manner. A Biodiversity Atlas was organised with species presence or non-detection, based on data collected through Mergin Maps and also from other databases. For Maio Island, a project was also developed for the Mergin Maps mobile application, with the objective of facilitating the collection of biodiversity records. In this case study, all collected information is managed in QGIS, a simpler solution than the one adopted for the previous case. The methodology associated with the use of QGIS and Mergin Maps was compiled into two tutorials. One of them details the specific steps for creating a QGIS | Mergin Maps project (creator tutorial), while the other focuses on the use of the mobile application in the field (user tutorial)
Genetic diversity in the American elephantfish (Chimaeriformes: Callorhinchus callorynchus) and among its congeners
Understanding genetic population structure and connectivity is essential for effective species-specific management and conservation strategies. The American elephantfish Callorhinchus callorynchus is targeted and retained as incidental catch in commercial and recreational fisheries in Chile and Argentina. Its wide-ranging distribution across southern South America may require transnational co-operation to ensure sustainable use, but its current population structure is not known. In this work, we analysed the levels of genetic diversity and differentiation within C. callorynchus in South America using two mitochondrial markers, the control region (CR) and the cytochrome oxidase subunit I gene (CO1). Moreover, we assessed levels of genetic diversity within, and divergence among, the three extant callorhinchids (genus Callorhinchus), a group that exhibits allopatric geographical distributions in the southern hemisphere. Overall, sequence analyses of the mitochondrial CR and the CO1 revealed extremely low levels of sequence variation both within and among Callorhinchus species. Genetic homogeneity was found throughout the range of C. callorynchus coupled to low-frequency haplotype sharing across spatially distant locations in Chile and Argentina, suggesting gene flow along the South American coast. Moreover, our analyses supported a scenario of recent population expansion of the species in South America. Given the absence of dispersive eggs or juvenile stages in chondrichthyans, gene flow is mainly mediated by actively swimming adults. Based on the available data, gene flow in callorhinchids appears to occur along continuous coastal regions, with deep oceanic waters serving as strong barriers. Findings here provide an important baseline for future research on dispersal and gene flow in holocephalans
Skeletal age assessed by Greulich-Pyle: intra-observer and inter-observer agreement among male pubertal tennis players
The assessment of biological maturation is a central topic in pediatric exercise sciences. Skeletal age (SA) reflects changes in each bone of the hand and wrist from initial ossification to the adult state. This study examined intra-observer and inter-examiner agreement is Greulich-Pyle (GP) assessments of SA in 97 male tennis players 8.6–16.8 years of age. Two observers independently examined all films on two occasions using the GP method. The SA of each bone was evaluated. The mean and median of SAs assigned for each bone was the individual SA for each participant. The calculation was exclusively based on the bones that were not skeletally mature. Intra-observer mean differences were significant for several bones with better results by the experienced examiner (observer B). Comparisons between SA values of the two independent observers indicated significant differences for the ulna, metacarpals II and III, and distal phalanx V. Nevertheless, the magnitude of the bone-specific differences was small, perhaps trivial. Differences in individual SA values of the tennis players based on the non-mature bones of the hand-wrist were negligible based on the mean (0.04±0.39, t = 0.321, p = 0.749) or the median (0.05±0.58, t = 0.007, p = 0.994). Nevertheless, the current study confirmed examiners as a source of error in the estimation of SA using the Greulich-Pyle method and highlighted the importance of calculating SAs based on non-mature bones among adolescent players.UIDP/04213/202
This research sought to answer the following questions: how have dance artists made credible the fantasy of subverting gravity through digital resources? How do digital resources enable these artists’ work? Among the answers, two original contributions to the field of digital art were found: the relational axes, a category that explains the elements related to creating the illusion of subverting gravity in dance upon digital mediation and their mutual relations; and the dance artifact’s levels of interaction, a category that classifies the artifact according to the quality of its interaction with the audience by means of digital resources. In the first category – relational axes – the analysis led to the recognition of the features connected to constructing the subversion of gravity. They are: setting, camera, audience and gravity. The various combinations of positioning between these elements form what we have come to call relational axes. The second category developed – interactional levels – responds mainly to the way in which digital media enable artistic work. The artifacts are rated based on their level of interaction with the audience through digital resources. Four interactional levels were found: level 1, also called ‘one-way artefact’; level 2, also called ‘public engagement artifact’; level 3, also called ‘digital manipulation artifact’; and level 4, also called ‘interactive differential artefact’. The research was guided by two main strategies: 1. Art Practice-Based Research (APBR), resulted in two pieces, guided by the a/r/cography, that are part of the sample of analysis; and: 2. Art-Based Research (ABR), through the analysis of ten creative processes, created by five distinct artists, including the author

Analysing content generated by guests through travel agencies is an efficient method for identifying positive and negative points that can be improved (Petry, Pickler e Tomelin, 2016) and thus generating better positioning in the market (Leal, 2021). This dissertation aims to verify how to promote the improvement of the operations of the Descontrair & Descansar group, located in Faro, based on the analysis of online reviews of its local accommodations. The online reviews of the local accommodations left on Booking.com between October 2022 and April 2024 will generate suggestions for changes to their operations, to improve the management of service quality and the guest experience. The Case Study is the methodology chosen for this dissertation. From the manual extraction of the reviews from Descontrair & Descansar’s local accommodations on Booking.com, organization of the data in Excel and qualitative analysis using the NVivo software, the data will be analysed beyond the categories pre-defined by the OTA. The results of this work identified themes beyond what was expected when the study began. There was a balance between evaluations based on the amenities and atmosphere of the hostels. In Faro Central, the problems identified prior to the study were confirmed. This work is the first academic study of Descontrair & Descansar and allows for an academic perspective on the establishments. The theme of this Case Study can be developed in future work on these local accommodations or can be used for comparison studies with other local accommodations
Fly like a bird: Uma proposta de cartografia poética
I develop in this work an analysis of my artistic production, in which drawing is assumed simultaneously as an object of creation and a tool for thought. Throughout the master’s program, I created several works that form an inseparable product of this research. Through pictorial form, I translate various historical and scientific knowledge to which this investigation aimed to contribute. This artistic project is based on a cartographic perspective, related to landscape and memory. To achieve this, it engages in dialogue with the history of landscape painting and the cartographic perspective, without which I would not have been able to conduct an introspection on my creative process. The influences of works and artists that contribute to the creative gesture of this collection of cartographic drawings are also highlighted. As a methodology, the processual approach to creation and the artist’s writing were chosen, materialized primarily through drawing. At the end, a future exhibition project is presented, titled Fly like a bird, which also gives its name to this study. The exhibition project consists of drawings developed throughout the master’s program that, through the materiality of drawing, revisit certain questions about landscape, cartographic perspective, and territory explored in this research, in a complementary double reflection conducted through drawing and writing
Combining optical and SAR satellite data to monitor coastline changes in the Black Sea
The coastal environments of the Black Sea are of high ecological and socio-economic importance. Understanding changes along this extensive and complex coastline can help us comprehend the pressures from nature, society, and extreme events, providing valuable insights for more effective management and the prevention of future adverse changes. Current methods for monitoring coastal dynamics rely on the accurate extraction of coastlines from optical and/or Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images, providing information only on the rate of change. This study developed a simple yet novel approach by combining Sentinel-1 SAR image for surface change detection and Sentinel-2 Multispectral Instrument (MSI) optical image for coastline detection, which provides data on both the rate and area of change. Coastlines were extracted from the Modified Normalised Difference Water Index (MNDWI) calculated from MSI images and rates of change were calculated from the extracted coastlines. SAR images for the same areas were stacked and differences during the analysis period were calculated, allowing the determination of the area of change. Another new method was developed to combine the changes detected from optical and SAR images, and only results in locations showed consistent change direction (erosion or accretion) were retained. The extracted coastlines were validated using in situ-measured coastlines along the Romanian and Georgian coasts. The validation analysis showed that the average difference between satellite-derived and in situ coastlines was 11.8 m. The method developed was then applied to the entire Black Sea coast, revealing 35.1 km2 of changes between 2016 and 2023. These observed changes include 23.9 km2 (68 %) coastal advance and 11.3 km2 (32 %) of retreat. A total of 54 % of the changes are estimated to be the result of natural coastline erosion or accretion, whilst 35 % can be attributed to artificial changes related to construction activity. Around 11 % are attributed to random occurrences due to boat/ship movement or land cover changes on adjacent land. Natural coastline changes were mainly observed in the vicinity of deltaic and estuarine system and along sandy shorelines, including along the Danube Delta, K & imath;z & imath;l & imath;rmak-Yes,il & imath;rmak deltas, Chorokhi-Rioni-Kodori River mouths and the coast from Dnieper-Bug Estuary to Karkinit Bay. Artificial changes were mainly found along the southern Black Sea coast, where airports, ports, harbours, and jetties have been constructed in recent years. The proposed method provides a simple, efficient and accurate way for coastline change monitoring, and findings in this study can support the sustainable coastal zone management in the Black Sea.CEECINST/00052/2021/CP2792/CT0011; LA/P/00069/2020
