Mobility of populations in the transition from muslim world to portuguese kingdom in the Algarve, South Portugal, 11th-13th centuries
This study investigates mobility during the transition from Muslim to Christian rule in the Algarve, southern Portugal (11th–13th centuries), using multi-isotope analysis to understand population dynamics during this complex conquest period. Skeletal remains from two key populations were analysed: the final Muslims buried in Loulé before the Christian conquest (necropolises of Quinta da Boavista and Hospital da Misericórdia) and the earliest Christians buried in Cacela-aVelha following the Order of Santiago’s capture in 1240 (necropolis of Poço Antigo). Contemporary faunal remains from trash pits and storage silos were also examined (Loulé: Oficina do Senhor Carrilho; Cacela: Silo 7 of Largo da Fortaleza). Strontium, oxygen, and sulphur isotope analysis of human and animal remains were combined with plant sampling for environmental baselines. Machine learning algorithms integrated this data with published Iberian Peninsula plant isotope ratios to create updated strontium isoscape maps, enabling probabilistic geographic assignment of non-local individuals. Ancient DNA analysis of selected Muslim individuals provided additional mobility insights. Results reveal strikingly different mobility patterns. Muslim individuals were largely local (~95%) with a few non-local likely from the Maghreb or eastern Spain. Conversely, the Christian population displayed extensive mobility, greater for males than females, with nearly 50% non-local to the Algarve. Potential origins were diverse and included regions along the Guadiana River and N/ NE areas. While Muslims showed no sex-based isotope mobility patterns, paleogenetic analysis suggested patrilocal social structures and highlight the complex genetic landscape of the region. Thermal performance of early stages of Sparus aurata integrating body condition, behavior and physiological responses
Temperature has a profound impact on fish, particularly during the early life stages (ELS), when they exhibit a narrower range of thermal tolerance compared to later developmental phases. This study investigated the long-term effects of temperature on Sparus aurata ELS that were exposed to four temperature regimes for 11 weeks: 19 °C, 22 °C, 24 °C and 28 °C. Parameters evaluated included growth, Fulton’s condition factor, behavior (risk-taking, activity and aggressiveness), routine metabolic rate (RMR), metabolic enzyme activity (citrate synthase and lactate dehydrogenase) and oxidative stress biomarkers (Lipid Peroxidation, Catalase and Glutathione-S-Transferase). Growth and condition were highest at 28 °C and lowest at 19 °C. While risk-taking behavior was unaffected by temperature, aggressiveness increased at 24 °C and 28 °C. Swimming activity increased from 22 °C to 28 °C, but RMR remained stable. Antioxidant enzyme activity increased in the brain and gills at 28 °C, but no signs of Lipid Peroxidation were found. Physiological biomarkers accounted for over 67% of trait variability. These findings suggest that S. aurata ELS adopt temperature-specific physiological strategies, such as upregulating metabolic enzymes at lower temperatures to sustain body condition and enhancing antioxidant defenses at higher temperatures to counteract oxidative stress. Exploring the clinical benefits of genomic profiling for advanced solid tumors in Portugal.
Background: Comprehensive genomic profiling (CGP) plays a significant role in precision oncology by pairing genomic alterations from different tumor types with molecularly targeted therapies. However, the evaluation of its real-world impact, clinical utility, and effects on quality of life remain unexplored. The FRONTAL study (Foundation medicine Real wOrld evideNce in porTugAL) is an ongoing multicentric academic study that aims to establish a national registry of portuguese patients with solid tumors that underwent CGP through Foundation Medicine tests (FoundationOne CDx, Liquid CDx, and Heme). Methods: The study enrolled portuguese patients diagnosed with advanced solid tumors who were not eligible for curative treatment at the time of recruitment. Patients who had previously done CGP evaluation could be included if the test was conducted within one year before the start of the study. CGP data was retrieved from the Foundation Medicine reports and clinical data from the medical records. Actionable genomic findings were reported if associated to therapies for the patient’s tumor type or with proven clinical benefit in other tumor types based on the NCCN Categories of Evidence and Consensus. In addition, quality of life questionnaires (QLQ-C30) were collected for a subset of patients. The primary outcome was a binary endpoint of disease control at 16 weeks of treatment, defined by the absence of progression at that timepoint. Results: Genomic and real-world clinical data were collected and analyzed for 146 patients ( . 70% of the cohort), from 10 different sites in Portugal. Several cancer types were included, with colorectal tumors being the most common (19%), followed by sarcomas (18%) and pancreatic tumors (12%). According to the Foundation Medicine reports, actionable molecular alterations were described in 52% of the cohort. Twenty-three percent of the patients had their therapeutic decision changed due to the CGP result. The most frequent alterations among these patients included high tumor mutational burden (TMB) and/or microsatellite instability (MSI) (35%), as well as pathogenic mutations in PIK3CA (15%) and ATM (12%). Forty-three percent of patients with changed therapy were reported to have achieved disease control at 16 weeks of treatment. Half of the patients with disease control had either high TMB, MSI, or BRAF mutations, reinforcing that evaluating actionable alterations with tissue-agnostic FDA approvals benefit oncology patients. Conclusions: The FRONTAL study highlights the clinical utility of CGP in advanced solid tumors. We identified actionable alterations in 52% of patients, leading to changes in treatment for 23% of the cohort. These findings support the value of CGP in guiding personalized therapies and emphasize the need for further research into its impact on patient outcomes and quality of life. Research Sponsor: None
The new era of tourism: security and well-being in tourism destinations
Wellness tourism is at the intersection of tourism and wellness, two large and growing industries. Holistic health and prevention are increasingly central to the decision-making of wellness tourists. Wellness tourism is travel associated with the pursuit of maintaining or improving one’s well-being and includes all experiences and expenditures made by tourists on wellness-related trips. As a growing segment of the global tourism industry, wellness tourism offers significant potential for both personal and economic benefits. Despite its increasing popularity, the sector remains underexplored, particularly regarding its distinction from other sub-categories of health tourism, such as medical tourism. Therefore, the research is structured into three distinct studies. Study 1 and Study 2 present a comprehensive theoretical foundation through a bibliometric analysis and a systematic literature review. These studies chart the evolution of wellness tourism, analyse key trends, identify theoretical and methodological frameworks, and highlight emerging areas for future exploration. Study 3 focuses on empirical analysis, examining the factors that shape destination loyalty in the wellness tourism context in Portugal, a segment that remains underexplored in the country. It utilises Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) to analyse the relationships between destination loyalty and factors such as tourist perceived safety at the destinations, tourist worry, tourist perception of restorative environments, well-being, and life satisfaction. The findings highlight the importance of a peaceful, secure environment in promoting wellness tourism experiences. The study also reveals the unexpected role of tourist worry in fostering destination loyalty, challenging previous assumptions. Moreover, the research underscores the growing significance of restorative environments in promoting well-being and life satisfaction through tourism practices and the potential of Portugal to position itself as a leading wellness destination. By contributing to the theoretical and practical understanding of wellness tourism, this thesis paves the way for future studies. It offers valuable insights for researchers, tourism practitioners and policymakers aiming to foster the growth of this sector.Ao longo dos anos, o setor do turismo tem vindo a destacar-se como uma das indústrias mais dinâmicas e influentes da economia mundial. Para além do valor económico, a atividade turística tem contribuído de forma significativa para o desenvolvimento das regiões e das comunidades locais. Este crescimento tem sido acompanhado por uma diversificação dos mercados, à medida que os destinos turísticos procuram atrair visitantes através da oferta de experiências exclusivas e personalizadas. É precisamente nesta procura ativa pela diferenciação e especialização que os mercados de nicho, como o turismo de bem-estar, têm vindo a registar um crescimento significativo. Paralelamente, o campo da psicologia positiva, conforme proposto por Seligman e Csikszentmihalyi (2000), tem-se concentrado no estudo dos fatores que contribuem para o bemestar e a satisfação com a vida dos indivíduos. Embora predominantemente enraizados na psicologia, os estudos contemporâneos sobre o bem-estar têm vindo a assumir uma natureza cada vez mais interdisciplinar, expandindo-se progressivamente para o domínio do turismo. Os investigadores têm recorrido com frequência aos conceitos da psicologia positiva para explorar de que forma é que as experiências turísticas podem facilitar estados psicológicos positivos. A investigação académica tem sugerido que as experiências turísticas aumentam significativamente a satisfação com a vida, a felicidade e o bem-estar. A interseção entre a psicologia e o turismo é particularmente evidente no turismo de bem-estar, um ramo do turismo de saúde. O turismo de bem-estar visa a procura ativa pela manutenção ou melhoria do bem-estar através de experiências direcionadas para a promoção da saúde geral. Os serviços podem incluir tratamentos de spa, aulas de yoga, sessões de meditação, termalismo, imersão em ambientes naturais ou programas de alimentação saudável. Este segmento tem vindo a crescer de forma significativa na última década, particularmente
após a pandemia de COVID-19, onde se observou uma aceleração desta tendência, à medida que os indivíduos sentiram uma maior necessidade de restaurar o seu equilíbrio emocional, mental e físico. Por ser uma área de investigação relativamente recente, o turismo de bem-estar é muitas vezes confundido na literatura académica com o turismo médico. Ambos correspondem a subcategorias do turismo de saúde. Contudo, o turismo de bem-estar tem como característica principal a procura ativa por experiências que promovem o bem-estar, a qualidade de vida e o equilíbrio geral. Aqueles que optam por este tipo de turismo geralmente procuram relaxamento,
rejuvenescimento, prevenção de doenças e desenvolvimento pessoal. Por outro lado, o turismo médico tem como objetivo principal a realização de tratamentos médicos, cirúrgicos ou dentários especializados, que podem não estar disponíveis ou acessíveis no país de residência do turista. Este segmento caracteriza-se por uma abordagem mais reativa, onde o foco está na procura de tratamentos para tratar ou prevenir determinadas doenças. Neste contexto, e numa primeira fase, a tese tem como objetivo principal contribuir para uma correta definição e caracterização do turismo de bem-estar através da análise da literatura científica publicada na área. Posteriormente, esta tese explora os fatores que contribuem para a lealdade ao destino no turismo de bem-estar, com particular enfoque no contexto português. Deste modo, entre 2020 e 2025, foram desenvolvidos trabalhos de investigação que resultaram em três artigos científicos, dois teóricos e um empírico, posteriormente submetidos a revistas científicas especializadas em turismo. O primeiro estudo visa definir e caraterizar o panorama da investigação sobre o turismo de bem-estar através de uma análise bibliométrica assente em 143 artigos científicos publicados entre 2013 e o primeiro semestre de 2023. O objetivo é mapear a evolução da literatura sobre o tema, identificar tendências emergentes e lacunas na investigação. Os resultados revelaram um aumento significativo do número de publicações na última década, com um crescimento expressivo após a pandemia da COVID-19. O impacto da pandemia na investigação sobre o turismo de bem-estar foi evidente, refletindo um interesse renovado nas viagens de bem-estar.
Apesar do aumento da investigação sobre turismo de bem-estar, o estudo bibliométrico sublinhou a necessidade de mais estudos nesta área. O segundo estudo diz respeito a uma revisão sistemática da literatura, tendo por base o método PRISMA (Page et al., 2021), com o intuito de identificar as principais abordagens teóricas e metodológicas utilizadas na investigação sobre turismo de bem-estar, identificar os tópicos mais estudados e sugerir recomendações para estudos futuros. A revisão de 72 artigos publicados entre 2019 e 2023 destacou que os fatores intrínsecos, tais como o desejo de autoaperfeiçoamento, o alívio do stress e a autoindulgência, desempenham um papel fundamental na formação dos processos de tomada de decisão dos turistas de bem-estar. Concluiu-se que a experiência de turismo de bem-estar tem um impacto positivo no bem-estar, na satisfação com a vida e na lealdade ao destino. Adicionalmente, verificou-se que a perceção de segurança e as qualidades restauradoras dos ambientes onde decorrem as experiências de bem-estar são elementos-chave na promoção do bem-estar do turista e na promoção da lealdade ao destino. A revisão sistemática também apontou as tendências metodológicas na investigação sobre o turismo de bem-estar, registando uma predominância de estudos quantitativos e a
necessidade de mais abordagens qualitativas e de métodos mistos. O terceiro estudo utiliza a modelagem de equações estruturais com mínimos quadrados
parciais (PLS-SEM) para analisar a relação entre a lealdade ao destino e a perceção de segurança nos destinos, as preocupações dos turistas, a perceção de ambientes reparadores, o bem-estar e a satisfação com a vida. Este estudo empírico revelou que a perceção de segurança nos destinos tem um impacto significativo na lealdade ao destino e na perceção de ambientes restauradores. Por sua vez, a perceção de ambientes restauradores, caracterizados pelo relaxamento, recuperação cognitiva e sentimento de ligação ao ambiente, influencia positivamente o bem-estar dos turistas, a satisfação com a vida e a intenção de revisitar ou recomendar o destino. No entanto, contrariamente ao esperado, o estudo encontrou uma relação positiva entre os níveis de preocupação dos turistas e a lealdade ao destino, uma relação que deve ser explorada em estudos futuros. Adicionalmente, a investigação confirmou que tanto o bem-estar hedónico como o eudaimónico contribuem significativamente para a lealdade ao destino, com o bem-estar hedónico a surgir como maior preditor. Do ponto de vista teórico, a tese aprofunda a compreensão das variáveis psicológicas e
ambientais que influenciam a experiência do turista de bem-estar. Destaca, em particular, o papel da segurança percebida nos destinos e dos ambientes restauradores na promoção do bemestar, satisfação com a vida e lealdade ao destino. De igual modo, propõe uma distinção clara entre turismo de bem-estar e turismo médico, contribuindo para uma definição mais precisa deste segmento. Em termos práticos, a investigação faculta recomendações relevantes para profissionais do setor e decisores políticos. Salienta a importância de criar ambientes seguros e tranquilos, que favoreçam a recuperação física, mental e espiritual dos indivíduos. A personalização das ofertas de bem-estar também é apontada como uma via eficaz para fortalecer a lealdade dos turistas e aumentar a competitividade dos destinos. Em Portugal, o turismo de bem-estar ainda é pouco explorado, sobretudo quando comparado com outros segmentos turísticos. Apesar dos abundantes recursos naturais, como praias, montanhas, termas e zonas rurais, com forte potencial para o desenvolvimento deste tipo de turismo, a investigação tem-se centrado exclusivamente no turismo termal, frequentemente
associado ao turismo médico. Esta tese contribui para preencher essa lacuna ao focar-se exclusivamente no estudo do turismo de bem-estar, excluindo experiências motivadas por razões médicas. O estudo empírico realizado em território português abrangeu um vasto leque de experiências de bem-estar, tais como caminhadas na natureza, massagens, yoga, meditação e visitas a termas. Long-term multitracking reveals contrasting yet highly resident movement ecologies of two sympatric and endangered deep-sea sharks
Studying shark movement ecology is vital for understanding their ecological roles and supporting sustainable management and conservation strategies. However, such information remains scarce for deep-sea sharks. We used biotelemetry to investigate the spatial behaviour and movements of two endangered deep-sea predators, the kitefin (Dalatias licha) and bluntnose sixgill (Hexanchus griseus) sharks, in the Azores, northern Mid-Atlantic Ridge. We tagged a total of 21 kitefin sharks with acoustic transmitters (some including depth sensors) and seven sixgill sharks with different tag configurations: three were fitted exclusively with acoustic transmitters, two were double-tagged with both acoustic transmitters and pop-up satellite archival tags (PSATs), and two were tagged exclusively with PSATs deployed via a speargun-equipped submersible. Both species exhibited diel vertical migrations and unexpected high site fidelity (up to 4 years), using habitats that inter-connect seamounts, slopes, and island shelves. Sixgill sharks exhibited more extensive and diverse individual home ranges and vertical diel activity patterns than kitefin sharks. Sexual segregation was evident in kitefin sharks, with males and females displaying distinct differences in depth distribution and habitat use, supporting earlier hypotheses based on fisheries data. These behavioural patterns suggest that sixgill sharks function as wide-ranging, deep-sea opportunistic foragers and predators, traversing interconnected habitats in search of prey – including kitefin sharks, which occupy a more slope-associated mesopredator niche. Our novel findings support ecological theory suggesting that deep-sea sharks exhibit far more contrasting spatial ecologies than previously thought, driven by their life histories. Is connectedness between commodity volatility indices and G-7 stock market returns the same across return quantiles?
This study examines the connectedness and spillover effects among G7 stock markets, oil and gold volatilities from January 1, 2017, to June 16, 2022. By employing an in-quantile spillover approach, the study contributes to the existing literature by providing a comprehensive analysis of the linkages between these markets. The findings reveal that spillover effects are highly dynamic and vary significantly across different quantiles of the return distribution. During periods of market turbulence—such as the Covid-19 pandemic, trade tensions, and geopolitical conflicts—spillover intensity increases, indicating heightened market interdependence. The Japanese stock market and Gold volatility index (GVX) consistently act as net recipients of shocks, whereas the stock markets of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, the UK, and the USA serve as net transmitters. While long-term diversification opportunities appear limited, gold and oil exhibit effective hedging properties for short-term investors across various market conditions. From a policy perspective, these findings underscore the importance of monitoring market interdependencies, particularly during crisis periods. Policymakers should implement coordinated strategies to mitigate systemic risks in financial markets, especially in times of heightened uncertainty. Investors should consider short-term hedging strategies using gold and oil to minimize risk exposure during market downturns. Furthermore, financial regulators in G7 countries should enhance surveillance mechanisms to preempt excessive spillovers that may threaten financial stability
Spectral Unmixing of Coastal Dune Plant Species from Very High Resolution Satellite Imagery
While improvements in the spectral and spatial resolution of satellite imagery have opened up new prospects for large-scale environmental monitoring, this potential has remained largely unrealised in dune ecogeomorphology. This is especially true for Mediterranean coastal dunes, where the highly mixed and sparse vegetation requires high resolution satellites and spectral unmixing techniques. To achieve this aim, we employed random forest regressors to predict the fractional cover of dune plant species in two of the sandy barriers of Ria Formosa (S. Portugal) from WorldView-2 imagery (June 2024). The algorithm, tested with spatially upscaled multispectral drone data and satellite imagery, detected the fractional cover of major species (most abundant classes and bushy vegetation) with reasonable to very good accuracy (coefficient of determination, CoD: 0.4 to 0.8) for the former and reasonable to good accuracy (CoD: 0.4 to 0.6) for the latter. Additional tests showed that (a) including the distance to the shoreline can increase model accuracy (CoD by ~0.1); (b) the grouping of species resulted in an insignificant increase in model skill; and (c) testing over independent dune plots showed generalisation beyond the training set and low risk of overfitting or noise. Multi-generation dispersal shapes the genetic structure of the canopy-forming seaweed Ericaria amentacea syn. Cystoseira amentacea in the north-western Mediterranean Sea
Canopy-forming seaweeds, especially fucoids (Fucales, Phaeophyceae), constitute marine forests in the Mediterranean Sea that deliver key ecosystem services. However, escalating human pressures in coastal areas have led to habitat fragmentation, significantly impacting the dynamics of gene flow and evolutionary trajectories. In this study, we investigated population connectivity among 43 sites with Ericaria amentacea in the northwestern Mediterranean Sea. By integrating microsatellite genotyping and biophysical modelling, we aimed to evaluate the hypothesis that population connectivity is approximated by oceanographic connectivity, rather than coastal distance. While traditional approaches to oceanographic connectivity had focused on single-generation dispersal models, we adopted a multi-generation perspective. This involves employing a biophysical model that considers gene flow through multiple stepping-stone populations across the E. amentacea distribution and over distinct generations of dispersal. Using distance-based redundancy analysis (dbRDA), we found that multi-generation dispersal significantly contributes to genetic differentiation, surpassing the influence of coastal distance. Even so, genetic differentiation remained significant among all population pairs, suggesting that gene flow may be hindered by differential selection acting against migrants and/or obscured by the effects of local genetic drift. The latter is likely, given the species' low dispersal potential and self-compatibility, both of which promote small, spatially restricted breeding units. In addition, our results emphasized that oceanographic connectivity promoted long-distance dispersal across northern Corsica and Eastern Provence over a single generation through the drifting of fertile thalli, which might have contributed to moderate differentiation between local populations. Overall, this framework highlights the value of considering multi-generation dispersal across numerous intermediate stepping-stones for informing management strategies aimed at enhancing population connectivity and safeguarding genetic diversity in seaweeds
Glyphosate: a terrestrial threat to marine plants? a study on the seagrass zostera marina
Glyphosate-based herbicides (GBHs) are extensively used worldwide, raising concerns about their potential effect on non-target aquatic ecosystems. This study investigated the short-term physiological effects of a commercially available GBH on the seagrass Zostera marina under controlled mesocosm conditions. Z. marina individuals were exposed to three concentrations of glyphosate (0.165, 51, and 5100 mg L−1 ) for 4 days, and the impacts on photosynthetic performance, growth rate, photosynthetic pigments content and energy metabolism were assessed. Exposure to 5100 mg L−1 of glyphosate caused rapid water acidification and complete plant mortality within 24 h. Exposure to 51 mg L−1 of glyphosate significantly impaired photosynthetic efficiency and foliar growth rate. Energy availability, photosynthesis and photosynthetic pigments content were highly disrupted at both higher concentrations. Exposure to 0.165 mg L−1 of glyphosate decreased the foliar chlorophyll a/b ratio. These findings show that Z. marina can potentially be threatened by the presence of GBHs even at lower concentrations and underscore the necessity for monitoring herbicide pollution in coastal waters to protect seagrass habitats and associated ecosystems. Further research is needed to assess long-term effects and the role of herbicide formulations in mediating toxicity
Sex‐linked differentiation in commercially exploited fishes: rethinking population structure in dynamic marine environments
Understanding how genomic structure links with ecological and evolutionary processes is critical for forecasting species responses to dynamic marine environments, especially in commercially exploited marine species, where fishing pressure can impact genomic integrity. Here we investigate Merluccius paradoxus, a commercially exploited demersal fish that appears to be undergoing a range expansion along the southern African coastline. Using whole-genome sequence data of individuals from across the species' distribution (n=37), we reveal that sex-linked divergence, rather than geography, is the principal driver of genomic variation, challenging conventional assumptions of regional geographic population structure. Divergence was concentrated on autosomal regions (primarily large regions on Chromosomes 1 and 2), rather than known sex-determining (SD) regions (Chromosome 9), and did not have structural variants or extended linkage disequilibrium (LD). Instead, patterns were consistent with sex-specific directional selection acting on genes enriched for neuronal function, metabolism and muscle development, traits that are likely linked to behaviour, physiology and environmental tolerance. Males had reduced nucleotide diversity (π), low observed heterozygosity (Ho ) and longer runs of homozygosity (ROH) in these regions, suggesting recent selective sweeps or a reduced effective population size (Ne ). Together with spatial differences in sex distribution and genomic diversity metrics, results suggest that males and females may differ in both range dynamics and adaptive potential. As M. paradoxus continues to shift its distribution across geo-political boundaries, sex-biased adaptation may have important consequences for reproductive output, resilience and sustainable fisheries management under a changing climate.
