Negotiating Trauma through Music Video Creation during the United States HIV/AIDS Epidemic (1987-1995)
The early years of the United States HIV/AIDS epidemic (1981-1985) were marked by national and local government indifference towards the virus, resulting in the deaths of thousands of Americans. Sensing a need for education, members of the LGBTQ+ community and allies took matters into their own hands, creating music videos promoting and normalizing safe sex. Creators often partnered with non-governmental agencies, such as the Gay Men’s Health Crisis and later the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power, to produce these videos, with the goal of disseminating them through complex social networks of communities for widespread viewership. In this thesis, I explore the ways in which activists, fueled by the desire to help their communities, created evocative media not only to stop the spread of AIDS, but also to help those impacted by the virus, negotiating trauma within their own communities and reconstructing sources of pride along the way. I examine archival material from a variety of sources, utilizing both oral and written interviews and the personal digital archives of many filmmakers active within AIDS activist organizations during the period. I argue that these videos crossed both cultural and personal identity boundaries, in order to expand audience reach and enact social and political change. I later explore the material objects of video recordings, more specifically the videocassette and its lifespan as it relates to activist media and mourning. </p
Guyana Abyssal Gyre Experiment (GAGE) current meter mooring ocean velocity records obtained between February 2000 and April 2002 at 16°N
The present dataset corresponds to the current meter ocean velocity records from the Guyana Abyssal Gyre Experiment (GAGE) projects. These velocity measurements were obtained between 2000-2002 and explored by several studies over the years: e.g., Mauritzen et al. (2002) (https://doi.org/10.1029/2001JC001114), Kanzow (2004) (https://macau.uni-kiel.de/receive/diss_mods_00001228), Kanzow et al. (2006) (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.dsr.2005.12.007). Through this data publication we make this historical dataset broadly available to the scientific community as part of recent efforts to understand the Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW) flow in the North Atlantic. The GAGE dataset consists of six current meter moorings along 16°N between the Guadeloupe archipelago and the western flank of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge that measured ocean velocity between February 2000 and April 2002 between 1400-5200 m. Together with the Meridional Overturning Variability Experiment (MOVE)'s (https://mooring.ucsd.edu/move/) current meter/hydrographic moorings in the same region, this dataset represents a unique observational platform to study the North Atlantic Deep Water and AABW velocity patterns in the Tropical North Atlantic. Here you can find processed-quality-controlled velocity product and the raw velocity measurements from the individual instruments.We provide a series of NetCDF files containing the dataset. The file processed_gage_velocity.nc comprises the quality-controlled, 40h-low-pass filtered, and subsampled every two days Aanderaa current meter velocity records obtained as part of both GAGE and MOVE projects. The processed data velocity data were also interpolated to constant standard depth. In the "raw" directory, each file represents the original raw velocity records from each Aanderaa current meter deployed as part of GAGE and the necessary auxiliary data to perform the data processing and quality control. The resolution of the original measurements is every 30 minutes. Each raw file is named after the Id number of each instrument. All necessary metadata is included in the NetCDF data files.

The Transcriptomic and Bacterial Dynamics of Disease in the Critically Endangered Coral Acropora palmata
Coral disease is a global phenomenon, with the Caribbean noted as a coral disease hotspot. White band disease is the key driver of decline of the keystone Caribbean coral species Acropora palmata. Despite the large-scale reduction in coral cover, our understanding of the transcriptomic and bacterial microbiome disease responses in A. palmata is not well understood. This includes not knowing the causative pathogen(s) of white band disease, the transcriptomic response of the coral host to differing disease inoculations, the dynamics of the microbiome, and how heat stress influences disease susceptibility. This Ph.D. identified the disease dynamics of A. palmata inoculated with different diseases and how this affected the coral hosts transcriptomic and bacterial response. Characterisation of the coral hosts transcriptomic response was also identified for outplanted A. palmata to identify whether identified disease responses could be captured in an ex-situ environment. I found that A. palmata exhibits a strong transcriptomic response to disease inoculation that is highly similar to other coral species, namely the activation of a strong innate immune response. Despite differing disease types, and time of inoculations, a common response was identified at a transcriptomic level, with this dominated by genes important in innate immunity. Short term heat stress did not affect disease incidence, indicating longer term heat stress events may be required to increase disease susceptibility. The bacterial microbiome also showed a common response to different disease inoculations, indicating that manifestation of visual disease signs may be due to a successional shift from healthy to a diseased state. There were clear transcriptomic profiles of outplanted A. palmata over a year period, with gene sets showing high similarity during the warmer summer months with gene sets identified in disease inoculated corals. This dissertation has provided an in-depth characterization of the coral hosts transcriptomic and bacterial component of the microbiome response to disease in A. palmata.</p
Keeping Beaches Open; Enterococci in the Nearshore Environment and Properties of Sargassum During Composting
The fecal indicator bacteria (FIB), enterococci, is used to issue marine beach advisories. Measurements of this group of bacteria have been increasing in recent years leading to an increase in the number of beach advisories. Identifying the sources of enterococci are imperative to keeping beaches open. Extensive research has been conducted to evaluate bulk water and sediment matrices as potential sources, but much less research has evaluated the water from the sea surface microlayer (SML) and macroalgae (specifically Sargassum spp.). The objective of this dissertation is to fill the information gap by evaluating the exchange of microbes within the various beach matrices that include SML, bulk water, sediment, air, and Sargassum spp. plus the human and animal reservoirs that harbor this bacterium. Given that this study found that Sargassum spp. was found to represent a significant source, composting this resource was evaluated as a potential management solution for times when beach water is degraded due to excessive influxes of this macroalgae. To evaluate these objectives four studies were conducted. These included 1) a study on the microbial communities in the SML and the potential association with microbes in other matrices, 2) a study specifically examining sediment, decomposing seaweed, human, and other animals as sources of enterococci and their contributions to bacterial exceedances, 3) a study of composting Sargassum spp. and the quality of compost that is created as compared to various guidelines, and 4) a study evaluating the economics of Sargassum spp. composting from the perspective of a municipality. Two of the four studies assessed the potential sources of bacteria levels at the beach, while the other two focused specifically on the management solution of the one main source identified (Sargassum spp.).</p

Peripheral nerve stimulation for chronic knee pain following total knee arthroplasty: a systematic review
Chronic knee pain following total knee arthroplasty (TKA) affects a subset of patients that is refractory to pharmacological and non-pharmacological modalities. Peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS) has been used in patients with chronic knee pain following TKA and has shown some efficacy. Methods: Comprehensive search of Ovid Medline, Elsevier Embase, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, CINAHL Plus with Full Text, Scopus, SPORTDiscus with Full Text and the Web of Science platform. From inception to August 2022, for studies using PNS to treat chronic knee pain following TKA. Primary outcomes included pain scores, functional status and medication usage. Results: Nine studies were extrapolated with all demonstrating effectiveness of PNS for patients with chronic knee pain following TKA. Discussion: PNS for chronic knee pain following TKA has been shown to be an efficacious treatment modality. The level of evidence is low and more research is needed to assess its safety and effectiveness
Comparison in Retreatments between Bevacizumab and Ranibizumab Intravitreal Injections for Retinopathy of Prematurity
To compare the types and dosages of anti-vascular endothelial growth factors (VEGFs) to ascertain whether specific dosages or types of injection were associated with retreatment in clinical practice in the United States.
Multicenter, retrospective, consecutive series.
Patients with retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) treated with anti-VEGF injections from 2007 to 2021.
Sixteen sites from the United States participated. Data collected included demographics, birth characteristics, examination findings, type and dose of anti-VEGF treatment, retreatment rates, and time to retreatment. Comparisons of retreatment rates between bevacizumab and ranibizumab intravitreal injections were made.
Relative rate of retreatment between varying types of anti-VEGF therapy, including bevacizumab and ranibizumab, and the various dosages used for each.
Data from 873 eyes of 661 patients (61% male and 39% female) were collected. After exclusion of 40 eyes treated with laser before anti-VEGF injection and 266 eyes re-treated with laser at or beyond 8 weeks after the initial anti-VEGF treatment, 567 eyes of 307 patients (63% male and 37% female) remained and were included in the primary analysis. There was no difference between the no retreatment and retreatment groups in terms of birthweight, gestational age, age at first injection, ROP stages, or number of involved clock hours. The retreatment group had a larger percentage of aggressive ROP (34% vs. 18%, P < 0.001) and greater percentage of zone 1 ROP (49 vs. 34%, P = 0.001) than the no retreatment group. Ranibizumab use was associated with a higher rate of retreatment than bevacizumab use (58% vs. 37%, P < 0.001), whereas the rate of retreatment was not associated with a specific dose of ranibizumab (R2 = 0.67, P = 0.32). Meanwhile, lower doses of bevacizumab were associated with higher rates of retreatment compared with the higher doses (R2 = 0.84, P = 0.01). There was a dose-specific trend with higher doses trending toward lower retreatments for bevacizumab.
In a multicenter study of ROP patients initially treated with anti-VEGF therapy, ranibizumab and lower-dose bevacizumab use were associated with an increased rate of retreatment when compared with higher-dose bevacizumab.
