Seventy years after they were first described, the function of Traful Instruments is still uncertain. From their morphological design and the associated environmental and archaeological contexts, we postulate that they are part of a specialized «composite instrument» for fishing. While their characteristics are unique in the context of the lakes and rivers of North-west Argentinean Patagonia, similarities were found with the line-weights which are widely distributed in Magellanic marine contexts.
Assessment of groundwater quality of different micro-basins of Bangladesh 2 using hydrochemical analysis
On the basis of groundwater chemistry, an evaluation of groundwater for domestic and irrigation purposes was carried out for different regions of Bangladesh. Using the chemical compositions and different quality parameters, irrigation quality was assed using 6 different techniques: USDA method, FAO guidelines, Water-Types approach, Combined approach proposed by Al-Bassam et al. (2003), Ali (2010), and GOB (2007) guidelines. Drinking quality was judged by WHO (2011) provisional guidelines and GOB guidelines. Concentrations of major cations and anions of most groundwater samples were within allowable limit. Except one location (i.e. Barisal), the water for irrigation purpose are suitable to 19 marginally suitable considering salinity and sodicity. For drinking purpose, all except 2 locations (i.e. 20 Sunamgonj and Barisal, where iron is a concern) are found suitable. At these locations, other aquifer layer 21 with low Fe can be searched for safer Fe level. Alternatively, Fe removal system can be assembled for 22 collecting drinking water. Keywords: Groundwater, Hydrochemistry, Quality parameters, Integrated quality assessment, Banglades
Nación Mapuche: concepto, historia y desafíos presentes en Gulumapu-Araucanía
This article deals with the problems of the Mapuche nation; as a concept, as a historical view in contrast to the Chilean political nation and the current challenges of the Mapuche movement. This analysis will be performed in three stages, in the first, we will look at the importance of conceptual history as a historiographic method forgaining more precise access to the conceptual categories that relate to historical time, assessing their scope and significance. Secondly, we will carry out a thorough investigation of the literature to find out what are the different meanings of the concept of ‘nation’, the various existing trends of interpretation and the theoretical contributions in order to approach the problems of the Mapuche nation, in this space of the Andes, Gulumapu-Araucanía. Finally, we will review some of the view points of Mapuche intellectuals who address the problems of the Mapuche nation, including readings on ethnicity and colonialism, in order to quantify their theoretical contribution to the mapuche movement.
This paper proposes an analytical model for research into the sociocultural dimensions of social enterprises. The need to develop such models is due to the great variety of organizations currently summarized under the term «social enterprise». The model suggested in this contribution complements some of the existing academic definitions of social enterprises with sociocultural theories, such as Weber’s notion of «rationality», the «welfare regimes» announced by Esping-Andersen and the «social types» developed by Mary Douglas. I combine these concepts on two axes. The first axis is the social scale (at micro, meso and macro level) and includes the internal organization, legal characteristics and welfare state context of the social enterprise. The second axis is the «cultural type» underpinning the different scales of axis one: the bureaucratic-hierarchical, the commercial-individualistic and the traditional-communitarian.
This article presents new ethnographical information on milestones in the history of the transnational migration of Chilotes (inhabitants of Chiloe Island, southern Chile), from the 1950s up to the assemblages existing today in different parts of Chilean and Argentinean Patagonia. In particular, we analyse stages in the development of mobility linked to the economic boom in these southern territories, highlighting sectors in which jobs were created on both sides of the border. The preliminary results show how cultural connections are retained with places of origin and residence through the formation of communities, the circulation of goods, the extension of symbolic meanings and new inter-regional migratory trajectories. The methodology used was that of ethnographies in movement derived from circumstantial approaches in different locations in Chiloe and Patagonia between December 2015 and May 2017. The reflections in this work are a contribution to studies on human mobility in southern Chile from multi-local perspectives that allow cultural continuities to be identified in the experience of migration.
Radial Osteochondroma in a Chilean Pure Breed Rodeo Horse: First Case Reported in this Breed
A 5 year-old Chilean pure breed rodeo gelding was evaluated for lameness in the right forelimb and effusion of the common carpal sheath of the digital flexor tendons. Radiographs revealed exostosis with rounded margins arising from the palmar cortex of the distal metaphysis of the radius. Ultrasonographic examination revealed a thickened and proliferative synovium, excessive anechoic fluid and a hiperechogenic mass protruding from the cortical bone. Tenoscopic exploration confirmed the presence of the mass, and removal was successfully performed through thecotomy. At 4 months postoperatively, the horsed was successfully competing although present mild right forelimb lameness and improving.
Management of Equine production and its environmental impact: the case of settlements in Buenos Aires (Argentina).
Equine production in Buenos Aires (Argentina) is 512847 heads. The equine production management is an important factor for the minimization of environmental effects. This management includes the implementation of good practices. The aim of this paper is to characterize the equine production paddocks in Buenos Aires in terms of their management, and to evaluate the possible environmental impact they may generate. Sixteen paddocks have been characterized according to the sources of water supply, quantity and depth of the wells, breed, productive system, type and management of beds, type of feed, feeding practices, supplementation, other ration components and management. These are the first studies on environmental effects of equine production in Argentine
