Practices of farmers in production and marketing of tomato in Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State, Nigeria
Get PDFThe study described socio-economic characteristics, production, consumption and marketing patterns of tomato farmers as well as constraints they encounter in tomato production in Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State, Nigeria. One hundred and twenty tomato farmers randomly selected form twelve villages in the area constituted sample for the study. Data were collected with interview schedule and questionnaire and were presented with frequency, percentage and mean scores. Findings show that the respondents were mainly married (71%) women (72.5%) who were literate with mean age and mean farming experience of 42.22 years and 17.21years respectively. Greater proportion of the respondents grew tomatoes on communal land (31.7%) with personal savings (42.5%) and hired labour (45%). They grew tomatoes during rainy season (54.1%) using personal reserved seeds (53.3%). Lack/poor storage facility (M=2.00) and fluctuation in price of tomato (M = 2.13) were some of the serious constraints to production and marketing of tomatoes respectively in the area. The study recommends that government, non-governmental organisations, self help development organisations/agencies as well as philanthropists should assist in provision of storage facilities for tomatoes so as to reduce losses and ensure preservation and availability of the product all year round at reasonable and stable price

Get PDFThis article analyzes the data from the population census conductedin Easter Island by Chilean authorities in 1916. A total of 268 inhabitantswere asked about their proficiency level in Spanish language, in addition toemployment data among others aspects. Spanish language dominance by theadult population was important even when the formal school had arrivedonly two years before on the island. A significant number of salaried employees,especially in the male population was also observed. In addition, theSpanish language proficiency level tended to be higher in men than in womenprobably due to wage labor and in some cases due to the military service.Este artículo analiza los datos del censo de población llevado a cabo en Isla de Pascua en 1916 por la autoridad chilena. Se contabilizó un total de 268 habitantes y se tuvo la originalidad de preguntarles por el nivel de dominio del idioma castellano, además de datos laborales, entre otros aspectos. El censo arrojó un elocunte dominio del castellano por una parte importante de la población adulta, aun cuando la escuela formal había llegado hace sólo dos años a la isla. Se observó también una cantidad significativa de trabajadores asalariados, especialmente hombres. El nivel de dominio del castellano tendió a ser mayor en hombres que en mujeres, lo que probablemente se debió al trabajo asalariado y, en algunos casos, a la realización del servicio militar
El uso de dispositivos móviles por niños: entre el consumo y el cuidado familiar
Get PDFWe present the results of an investigation directed at understanding the interests, expectations and social conflicts arising from the use of mobile technologies by children. From a critical approach, technology is understood as a disputed instrumentalisation of social interests: on the one hand the dominant interests established by consumption and the market, and on the other family expectations for communication and care within the family. During 2015 we carried out a case study involving pupils and parents/ guardians of a fourth grade (primary school) class in a municipal school in the city of Temuco, Chile, using discussion groups, in-depth interviews and other research techniques suited to working with children. The object of the analysis was to understand the experiences of use, social norms, changes, conflicts and family expectations associated with mobile devices. We conclude with a reflection on the importance of understanding technological phenomena for social work, in this case for work with families, and we make some general proposals for public policy in Chile. Este artículo presenta los resultados de una investigación orientada a la comprensión de los intereses, expectativas y conflictos sociales que surgen en torno al uso de tecnologías móviles por parte de niños. Desde un enfoque crítico, se entiende la tecnología como una instrumentalización de intereses sociales en disputa: por una parte, los intereses dominantes que el mercado y el consumo establecen y, por otra, las expectativas familiares en torno a la comunicación y el cuidado familiar. Durante el año 2015 se desarrolló un estudio de casos a partir de la vinculación con estudiantes y apoderados de un curso de Cuarto básico de una escuela municipal de la ciudad de Temuco, Chile, y en el cual se implementaron grupos de discusión, entrevistas en profundidad y otras técnicas de investigación adaptadas al trabajo con niños. El análisis se orientó hacia la comprensión de las experiencias de uso, normas sociales, cambios, conflictos y expectativas familiares asociados con los dispositivos móviles. Se concluye reflexionando sobre la relevancia que la comprensión de fenómenos tecnológicos tiene para el trabajo social, en este caso, especialmente para el trabajo con familias, y se desarrollan propuestas generales de política pública adaptadas al caso chileno
La pesca y la caza marina en el desierto de Atacama: Luces conceptuales desde los documentos escritos (siglos XVI-XIX)
Get PDFHuman beings establish multiple forms of relationship with marine animals, in some cases through their capture. We discuss the constant confusions generated by definitions of the categories of marine capture, especially fishing, hunting and gathering. We propose a classification that considers capture as an interspecies relationship between human and animal, considering the multiple perspectives and agents involved. The proposal is exemplified by a case study of the littoral society of the Atacama Desert between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries, through information contained in written documents. Finally, we discuss the applicability of the proposal to these populations, in order to conceptually refine the definition and enrich the debate about relationships between humans and marine animal in the Atacama Desert littoral, and also outside the region.El ser humano establece relaciones con los animales marinos de múltiples formas, y una de ellas es a través de su captura. En este artículo discutimos las constantes confusiones que se generan en la definición de las categorías de captura marina, especialmente de pesca, caza y recolección, y proponemos una clasificación que considera la captura como una relación interespecie entre humano y animal, atendiendo las múltiples perspectivas y agentes involucrados. La propuesta se ejemplifica a partir de un caso de estudio, la sociedad litoral del desierto de Atacama entre los siglos XVI y XIX a través de la información contenida en los documentos escritos. Finalmente, discutimos la aplicabilidad de la propuesta entre estas poblaciones, para afinar su definición conceptual y enriquecer el debate sobre las relaciones entre humanos y animales marinos en el litoral del desierto de Atacama, pero también fuera de la región

Get PDFThis article examines the historical development of Mapuche trade unionism in the baking industry during the 20thcentury in Santiago, Chile. We contend that this form of organization sought to resist the racism and labor conditions that Mapuche migrants to the city had to confront. In addition, we situate bakery trade unionism in the context of the broader history of political and organizational resistance to the multiple effects of Chilean colonia-lism, including the alienation resulting from forced migration, racializedlabor regimes, and anti-indigenous discrimination, which are also analyzed in the present text. Finally, we argue that the experience of the unionized Mapuche bakers brings together in a single strand the history of the workers’ movement and the history of the Mapuche during the 20th centuryEste artículo examinámos el derrotero histórico del sindicalismo panificador mapuche durante el siglo XX en Santiago de Chile. Planteamos que esta forma de organización buscó resistir las implicancias laborales y racistas que debió enfrentar la migración mapuche en la ciudad. Con ello, situamos al sindicalismo panificador como parte de la historia política y organizativa contra los múltiples efectos que dejó el colonialismo chileno; entre ellos, el desarraigo migratorio, los trabajos racializados y la discriminación, los cualestambién son analizados en este texto. Finalmente, argumentamos que desde las experiencias de los panificadores mapuche sindicalizados es posible trenzar la historia del movimiento obrero y la historia mapuche durante el siglo XX
