Street Art and the Arab Spring: The Passage from Revolution to Institution
In few decades, street art has succeeded in migrating from the hidden undergrounds to the open streets. Shortly after the Arab uprisings in 2011, street art has proliferated in almost all the Arab countries. Each country used it for its own purpose, producing works of art that are unique to the place where they were produced. This article traces the evolution of street art during and after the Arab Spring. Drawing from social theory, it discusses the context that catalysed the emergence of some Arab street art experiences and the dynamics that interplayed, strongly marking the artistic scene during and after the Arab Spring. The article is a prelude to further research conducted on the street art scene in the MENA region
Gender Variations in Linguistic Styles Across Online Platforms: A Thematic Analysis
Extensive research has examined gender differences in communication across contexts. However, less is known about how variances manifest in digitally-mediated environments lacking traditional cues. This study analyses gender variations in linguistic styles across online platforms. A thematic analysis of discussion forum posts from gender-focused online communities was conducted to identify patterns in topics, expression of emotions, and interpersonal dynamics. Quantitative metrics including word count, sentiment polarity, and social interactions were also compared between male-centered and female-centered discussions. Key differences emerged. Women displayed more emotionally expressive language, drew from personal experiences, and crafted intimate discussions. Men conveyed opinions authoritatively with longer posts and less collegial exchanges. Cultural context also shaped dynamics, with variances depending on community composition. While certain established offline tendencies persist digitally, variances also evolve online. Recognizing distinctions can optimize gender inclusion in technology-mediated interactions permeating modern life. Further exploring contextual intricacies can offer deepened understanding for designers and users to accommodate diverse styles

The study has been carried out in two years in two Stages: Stage 1 has been conducted while the participants are at level 3, in 2023, and Stage 2 when they reach level four, 2024. The same group participated in both Stages. The results show that students’ ill-form performance is of various types including L1 transfer, L2 influence and unique errors. The study concludes that UG is still accessible to L2 learners as evident by the improvements the learners achieve in Stage 2
The New City Megaproject\u27s Issues: Network Discourse Analysis of the Development of the Pros and Cons of the Archipelago\u27s Determination and Capital Development (IKN)
President Jokowi signed Law Number 3/2022 on February 15, 2022, which declared Nusantara as the name of the new capital city, which is known in Indonesia by its abbreviation, IKN (Ibu Kota Nusantara). Since the passage of the law, both supporters and opponents of the decision have raised their voices in public places. IKN will replace Jakarta, which has existed as the capital of Indonesia since 1945. In the midst of concerns and issues regarding democratic regression, oligarchic dominance, the displacement of indigenous peoples, the COVID-19 pandemic, and forecasts of a global recession, these pro and con voices are becoming more and more abrasive. The paper attempts to discuss the debate between proponents and opponents of IKN\u27s determination and development. Discourse can be interpreted in this context as a set of concepts or ideas that are communicated by actors in order to influence public policy. The research mixes discourse analysis (qualitative content) with social networking techniques by applying the discourse network method (DNA) analysis. The idea of discourse coalition adds depth to the DNA approach by mapping every discourse that emerges about an issue (what), as well as the players who express the discourse (who) related to the issues and actors who are pro and contra to the IKN
Keywords and Semantic Domains in Annual Global Risks Reports through the Past Decade
Incorporating keyword analysis and semantic domain analysis, the present study linguistically investigated ten Global Risks Reports published by the World Economic Forum (WEF) from 2013 to 2024. The corpus comprised 174,800 word types and 405,366 word tokens. Using the features of Wmatrix and the concordance and collocation tools in Sketch Engine, the study identified the top themes, semantic domains, and patterns prevalent in the ten reports. The semantic domain analysis revealed deep insights into the details of these themes, patterns, and the types of language used compared to the keyword analysis. The results showed the obvious interplay between politics, the economy, technology, and the environment, with minimal attention given to humanitarian and social dynamics. Economic risks appear to be the most pressing risks according to these reports, with every theme ultimately boiling down to the economic situation. Additionally, the reports discussed governments’ economics without addressing their impact on citizens and their socioeconomic conditions. This study could be a valuable contribution to the literature that could aid in the tracking of long-term linguistic choices found in risk reports using corpus linguistics. It could also serve as a valuable reference for governments, institutions, or corporations that seek to interpret and analyze global risk reports.
The Presence of Biopower in Keiko Furukura from Sayaka Murata’s “Convenience Store Woman”
The collected written and oral works of a society portraying values and beliefs as well as their challenges are referred to as literature. In terms of age and volume, Japanese literature is comparable to Western literature. Sayaka Murata, a prominent Japanese author, critiques conventions, exemplified by her 2016 novella "Convenience Store Woman," shaping the identity of a 21st-century woman. Keiko, Murata’s heroine, works in a convenience store and lives through the question of absolute autonomy. This study investigates the presence of Biopower in Keiko Furukura from Sayaka Murata’s “Convenience Store Woman.” Specifically, it looks into character, settings, and themes. This study uses a qualitative method, specifically Discourse Analysis. The theories that support this study are Michel Foucault’s Theory of Biopower and Sociological Literary Criticism by Kenneth Burke. The results of this study reveal that Anatomopolitics and Biopolitics are the forms of Biopower present in the character. In the settings, both Anatamopolitics and Biopolitics are also exhibited. Similarly, Anatomopolitics and Biopolitics are the forms of Biopower found in the themes. Based on the findings, this study concludes that Biopower is present in Keiko Furukura from Sayaka Murata’s “Convenience Store Woman.” From the study’s conclusion, the following are recommended: The Death of Individualism: A Character Analysis of William Stoner from John William’s “Stoner,” Construction of Identity: A Sociological Critique of Natsuko Imamura’s “The Woman in the Purple Skirt,” Challenging Gender Norms: An Examination of Gender Norms in Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice,” Challenging the Contemporary Feminism of Kojima in “Heaven” by Meiko Kawakami
Gothic and Historical Elements in Washington Irving’s “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow”
Washington Irving’s short story “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” still haunts us today 200 years after it was written. Irving incorporated Gothic elements such as ancient and isolated settings, nature, superstitions, and supernatural ambiguity into his short story. Irving also included historical figures such as the British Major John André and the headless Hessian soldier. The author wove elements of the Gothic with historical facts from the American Revolution to create a memorable, uniquely American story.
Misyār Marriage and Its Rules According to Contemporary Jurists
The term "Misyār marriage" refers to a type of marriage characterized by the husband often visiting the wife periodically, similar to visiting neighbors. The word "Misyār" is derived from "sīr," which means movement and passage. It is a colloquial term used to denote the situation in which a man marries in a city he passes through while traveling for trade or seeking knowledge, where the wife resides during his study or business. Misyār marriage fulfills all the pillars and conditions of a legitimate marriage, but with a significant difference: the wife waives some of her rights, such as the right to financial support, housing, and overnight accommodation, under the marriage contract. This type of marriage has become common today due to the illegitimacy of temporary marriage in Sunni communities. Misyār marriage is considered a form of marriage that emerged in the modern era and has spread in some Islamic countries among Sunnis, which is why it has been subject to criticism and study by scholars and jurists. There is a divergence of opinion among contemporary Sunni scholars regarding the ruling on Misyār marriage; some consider it permissible, while others regard it as forbidden, and some reject its ruling and call for its cessation. Some scholars view Misyār marriage as valid and legitimate, but there is variation in opinions regarding its conditions. Some believe that all the conditions of this marriage are valid, while others argue that the essence of Misyār marriage is correct, but they added conditions-such as the waiver of the rights to financial support and overnight accommodation-are invalid, and the wife should demand these rights. Furthermore, some scholars call for the husband to fulfill his responsibilities towards the wife and to manage marital affairs with the utmost seriousness to resolve life problems. Proponents of this view often express reservations about Misyār marriage, suggesting that its permissibility comes with a degree of disapproval. On the other hand, the majority of earlier scholars and many later scholars have ruled it as forbidden, reflecting a clear variation in jurisprudential Ijtihad regarding this issue
