Unveiling the Apathy: Understanding the Causes of Student Disengagement in Student Governance
No full textThis study delved into the causes of student disengagement in any form of student-based governance of the University of Cebu College of Arts and Sciences Department\u27s Student Body Organization (CAS-SBO) during the academic year 2023-2024. A descriptive phenomenological research design was employed, exploring participants\u27 experiences in student governance, how these experiences influence their lack of total disengagement and the strategies that could revitalize their engagement and active participation in the said area. Data were gathered through in-depth interviews with twelve students selected via linear snowball sampling, focusing on those with prior governance experience who did not participate in recent CAS-SBO activities. Thematic content analysis revealed nine emergent themes: (1) Lack of Connection, Inequality in Representation, and Faculty Intervention as essential experiences in student governance; (2) Student Unfamiliarity, Feeling Unrepresented, and Unmet Expectations as reasons for disengagement; and (3) Inclusive Activities, Addressing Electoral Disparity, and Empowered Leadership as potential strategies to increase engagement. Based on these findings, the study recommends regular CAS-SBO general assemblies, teambuilding exercises, leadership seminars, and the election of representatives for each degree program to foster more vital student involvement and improve representation. The study also suggests future research topics, including electoral system reforms and former CAS-SBO presidents\u27 experiences
Determining Interest in Using Mobile Banking Applications in the Greater Jakarta
No full textThis study aimed to analyze the influence of perceived usefulness, service features, security, and trust on the interest in using mobile banking (e-banking) applications in the Greater Jakarta area. Additionally, it identified the most dominant variable influencing the interest in using the applications. The focus of the investigation was on mobile banking applications offered by BCA and BNI. The method further included the collection of primary data and conducting various tests such as validity, reliability, normality, heteroscedasticity, and multicollinearity testing. Multiple linear regression, determination coefficient, f-test, and t-test were also used with questionnaire instruments. The validated data were obtained from 100 respondents selected through a non-probability survey, specifically using a purposive sampling method. The results showed that perceived usefulness, service features, security, and trust all influenced the interest in using mobile banking in Greater Jakarta. Based on the t-test results and standardized coefficient beta analysis, perceived usefulness evolved as the most dominant variable

A Systematic Analysis of Kahoot\u27s Potential as a Tool for Improving EFL Instruction
No full textThis research provides a meta-analysis of an issue regarding the effectiveness of using Kahoot in English language learning environments from 2020 to 2024, focusing on the yearly publication rate, participant demographics, challenges, and benefits. It delves into the impact of technology integration and gamification on student learning outcomes, emphasizing the importance of motivation and engagement in educational settings. The systematic review explores some papers about Kahoot! in improving learning results in English for Foreign Language classes. It highlights the benefits of gamification in education, emphasizing Kahoot\u27s ability to engage students\u27 motivation and academic performance. This study also found some gaps in using Kahoot for English language learning among EFL students, including technology, competition, time management, classroom management, content creation, cultural relevance, and pedagogy. However, it shows several benefits, such as improved learning interest and process, better subject perception, higher class participation, and a more lively classroom state. Following the results, the researcher hopes this paper could give the impression that technology can provide great tools for improving English language learning, either for EFL learners or EFL teachers
Students’ Attitudes towards Teacher’ Using Minimal Pairs to Teach English Discrete Sounds: A Survey on First-Year English Majored Students at Dong Nai University
No full textThe current study was conducted to explore English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students’ attitudes towards teachers’ using minimal pairs to teach English discrete sounds. The participants of this research were fifty students who were English majored freshmen at Dong Nai University. For data collection, a questionnaire survey was designed and administered to fifty students. The result indicates that most students have positive perceptions of using the minimal pairs technique in improving their production of English language sounds. However, some students have difficulty in pronouncing the minimal pairs such as /t∫/ and /dʒ/, /θ/ and /ð/, /ʃ/ and /ʒ/. Therefore, some suggestions are proposed to help students solve these problems and produce and acquire English individual sounds more accurately
Enhancing Classroom Management and Student Engagement: The Role of ClassDojo and Gamification in Education
No full textThis study explores the effects of integrating ClassDojo, an AI-enhanced gamification platform, on classroom management and student engagement in a 6th-grade classroom. The primary objective is to evaluate how AI-driven features within ClassDojo impact student behavior, engagement, and classroom dynamics. A qualitative case study methodology was employed over four months in a classroom of 25 students in Casablanca. Data collection included direct classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and analysis of behavioral data logged by ClassDojo. The findings indicate significant improvements in both student engagement and behavior management. Students demonstrated higher levels of self-regulation and motivation, with an increase in positive behaviors and a decrease in negative behaviors. The AI-driven personalization features of ClassDojo were particularly effective in fostering an engaging and responsive learning environment. These results align with previous research on the advantages of gamification and AI in educational settings. The study suggests integrating AI with gamification tools like ClassDojo can substantially enhance classroom management and student engagement. It encourages schools to consider the broader adoption of such technologies, accompanied by comprehensive teacher training, to maximize their benefits. Further research is recommended to assess AI-enhanced gamification\u27s applicability and long-term impact across different educational settings
Evaluating the Efficacy of Total Physical Response (TPR) in Video-Based Vocabulary Instruction: A Case Study at Dokuz Eylul University, Türkiye
No full textThe goal of this study is to evaluate how the Total Physical Response Method (TPRM) is utilised to carry out the processes of teaching and learning vocabulary. In this examination, qualitative research was used as the methodology. The observation approach is by far the most common one utilised by researchers when it comes to data collection. The researcher accessed films on YouTube with the intention of studying and analysing the process of how vocabulary is taught and learned. Dokuz Eyluy University in Turkey supplied the research participants; all of them were either students or faculty members at the university majoring in English language studies or professionals in the field of teaching instructors of foreign languages. The findings of the research reveal that students find it easier to memorise new vocabulary when they acquire it using this strategy for the study of vocabulary. This is indicated by the fact that students found it simpler to memorise the new vocabulary. Students are able to learn vocabulary in a way that is both interesting and pleasurable with the help of this method, which incorporates both verbal and physical activity into the learning process
Violence against Blue-Eyed Women in the Novel Nyutrayu by Joko Gesang Santoso
No full textThis research aims to determine the form of violence experienced by the blue-eyed female character in the novel Nyutrayu by Joko Gesang Santoso. Researchers use feminist literary criticism theory. The data source for this research was obtained from a quote from the novel Nyutrayu, which describes the violence experienced by the blue-eyed female character. The data collection process uses data collection techniques through literature study, reading techniques, and note-taking techniques. The literature study technique is carried out by collecting, reading and studying books on feminist literary criticism theory; the reading technique is carried out repeatedly in the novel Nyutrayu, and the note-taking technique is to record quotes that show data in the form of violence experienced by the blue-eyed female character. Next, data validity techniques are carried out using validity tests and reliability tests. The validity test is carried out by interpreting the data based on the problem formulation and in accordance with feminist literary criticism. Meanwhile, the reliability test was carried out by repeatedly reading the novel Nyutrayu by Joko Gesang Santoso and discussing it with colleagues. The data analysis technique is carried out in three stages. First is data reduction, namely data collected and grouped according to the problem formulation. The second is data presentation, namely grouping data into data cards. Third, conclusions and verification are drawn, namely the final conclusion of the data, which is temporary and can change if evidence is found to support the data collection stage. The results of the research show that 1) the physical violence experienced by the blue-eyed female character was in the form of being killed by a group of men, being hit with a broom handle, and being injured by village youths using a machete. 2) psychological violence experienced by the blue-eyed female character in the form of being stalked by villagers, being accused of being a witch, and being threatened with death. And 3) sexual violence experienced by the blue-eyed female character in the form of sexual harassment and rape
The Intersection of Computer-Assisted-Language-Learning and SLA
No full textThis article provides an overview of the relationship between Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) and Second Language Acquisition (SLA) and how CALL practices can be informed and supported by SLA theories. To illustrate how CALL research has drawn on SLA research, a theoretical discussion of CALL theory and approaches and their underpinning principles in SLA is crucial. Research has proven the effectiveness of educational technologies in language learning. Therefore, it has become mandatory that the effectiveness of educational technologies should be blended with SLA insights about language and language learning to create theoretically and pedagogically sound CALL projects. Moreover, research in CALL, as a relatively new field, should make use of approaches and methods used in SLA research to investigate the questions of interest
Remarkable Trace Reflections on Colonialism and Racism in Conrad’s Heart of Darkness
No full textThis paper aims to analyze the issue of colonialism and racism in Joseph Conrad’s novel Heart of Darkness. The researcher surveyed scholarly articles, books and other sources relevant to the area of the research, providing a critical evaluation of this work. Basically, the title carries a rich connotation which indicates darkness in the colonial European psyche, making it disproportionate to equate physical darkness with spiritual darkness. The common characteristics of savagery between the Europeans and the Africans are traced back to a mutual dark and weak civilization, which in turn makes room for the more powerful to impose imperialistic rules on the less powerful. Further, this paper shows that the European banner of \u27civilization\u27 is hypocritical and raised to legitimize the false authority of taking over the jungles of Africa. The scenes revealing their corruption, including their acts of violence and murder, are concluded to be the dominant features of the civilization which they exalt. There is too a metaphoric but ironic correlation between the Africans and the Europeans regarding worshipping idols, as the white man is praying to ivory, and the black man is practicing questionable beliefs of spirituality. Moreover, the European ignorance of the dark continent shapes the fictional perception of black people and the African landscape as "prehistoric". Besides, there is a point of distinction between the white man of culture and the black man of nature, yet this gap neither justifies conquering Africa nor disgraces the African cultural inheritance. At last, there is a parallel image presented with regard to the European empire representative, Kurtz and his alleged possessions. Kurtz\u27s white fiancé and Kurtz\u27s black mistress portray the gap between European ideals and African disconnection with the least implications of civilization, which both are ultimately denounced by European imperialism
