    Australian Longitudinal Survey 1985-1988: Area Sample Calendar File

    The youth area sample component of the Australian Longitudinal Survey includes panel data from household interviews conducted in four annual waves from 1985 to 1988 with a representative sample of 8995 persons in the age cohort. In the calendar section of the survey, details are recorded each year which show the start and finish date of each job and period of job search. These have been linked over the four year survey period to give a continuous record of each job, period of job search, period of unemployment, period out of the labour force, and period of employment. Each of these states can have up to 36 occurrences. Each occurrence is identified by the week it started and the week it finished. Other variables summarise the number of spells and total weeks in employment, unemployment and weeks out of the labour force. For each job held in the survey period, a variable provides a link to the associated questions in the main data sets (SSDA Study No.'s 413, 421, 489 and 542), so that individual job details can be accessed

    This is the fourth wave of the youth area sample component of the Australian Longitudinal Survey . (See also SSDA Studies No. 377, 410, 420 and 491 for details of the four waves of the ALS list sample, and SSDA Studies No. 413, 421 and 489 for the first three waves of the youth area sample). The 1988 wave consisted of 6151 interviews with people aged 18 to 27. A multi-stage household based sample designed to represent all Australians in the age cohort, except those residing in sparsely settled areas, was employed. The survey aims mainly at providing data on the dynamics of the youth labour market, and in particular to address questions which are not readily covered with available sources of cross sectional data. Labour market variables include job history, job search behaviour, job training and transition from school/study to work. Background variables and topics related to the main labour market theme include education, occupation and health. Basic demographic variables include age, sex, size of household, country of birth, racial origin, parental education and occupation, spouse's education, religion, income, and whether resident in an urban or rural area

    Statistics of overseas arrivals in, and departures from, Australia are collected by means of the Incoming and Outgoing Passenger cards completed by all travellers. As well as being used for statistical purposes, the information collected is used by the Department of Immigration and Ethnic Affairs for administrative purposes. Data is made available on a six-monthly basis, in matrix format, from the beginning of 1975 to the end of 1981, and relates to the number of movements in a specified time, rather than the number of travellers (i.e. the multiple movements of individual persons within the time period are each counted separately). Information collected includes category of travel, duration of stay, country of birth, citizenship, dis/embarkation, as well as age, marital status and sex, and occupation

    The aim of this study was to conduct a part longitudinal and part cross-sectional study of the rate of growth of intellectual capacity of individuals, and in particular to determine: the nature of the development on a test set in the psychometric tradition and scaled to subscribe to the fundamental measurement; the relationship of this development to development ascertained from the cognitive developmental tradition associated with the work of Piaget; and the relationship of cognitive development in what are termed the social and physical domains. An extended test analogous to the Raven's (ACER 1958) Progressive Matrices Tests were used. Variables coded in each data set include gender and scored responses to the Raven's items administered at each testing session. The final data file contains information regarding the initial age of the subjects and their heights across all 6 testing sessions

    This survey consists of three segments: a follow-up survey of respondents first interviewed in 1971; a survey of recently married women; and a survey of never married males and females aged 18 to 25. Topics investigated were age at and reasons for leaving parents' home, subsequent living arrangements, child care arrangements where applicable, personal relationships, history of contraceptive use, and attitudes to sexual intercourse, contraception, family planning, family formation, spacing of children and family size. An omnibus section in each study asked for opinions on marriage, child-bearing, the role of women, assistance to parents and personal expectations. A final section consists of in-depth questions about attitudes to child-rearing, marriage, over population, pressures on housewives and working wives, the women's liberation movement, and motherhood. Background variables were date of birth, birthplace of self, parents and spouse (if applicable), education, occupation, employment status, income, holidays abroad and ownership of pets and consumer durables

    This study was conceived to determine workforce characteristics, distribution, utilisation and level of supply of nursing personnel in Australia and to estimate future requirements. Separate data sets were collected from health institutions, professional nurses, mothercraft nurses and nursing aides, and nursing students. Variables collected from health institutions include: number and classification of persons on payroll; hours worked; number of vacancies; ability to fill vacancies and methods used to do so. Variables contained in the three nursing personnel data sets include: residential area; educational qualifications; current employment information either within or outside the nursing profession, or, in the case or student nurses, possible place of employment upon course completion; employment status over the last five years; reasons for leaving/returning to nursing; reason for choosing a particular training school; expectations of returning to nursing if not currently working in the field

    This study was conducted to develop a statistical model of the prediction of the severity and type of motor vehicle accident injuries. This model could then be examined to determine which variables were most influential in the severity of injuries and these areas could be targetted by police to reduce the occurrence of serious injury and death. The data used consisted of observations of injuries sustained on NSW roads throughout 1991. It takes into account their relationship with several key factors, a few of which are generally well known, but several that are not. Main variables noted by police at the scene of the accident were such things as the use of seatbelts, vehicle make, type and age, speed of vehicle, seating position of caualty, blood alcohol reading, type of collision and time of day of accident.     New South Wales Recorded Crime Data 1995 to 2009, Victims of Crime

    The New South Wales Recorded Crime Data is a compiled record of crime data obtained from NSW police records. The data contain information on crime victim from the year 1995 to 2009. This data was extracted from the NSW Police Service's Computerised Operational Policing System (COPS). This system is used for record-keeping for all police operations, not just for criminal matters. Prior to April 1994, the NSW Police Service used a different system for recording criminal offences. Recorded crime statistics for NSW for periods prior to April 1994 are not comparable with those for more recent periods. In this report: the counting units are recorded criminal incidents (except for murder and manslaughter where the counting units are victims) rather than recorded offences; and the data are categorised by date of reporting to police (or date of detection by police) rather than date of occurrence of the offence. Incident variables include type of crime incident, premises on which the incident occurred, type of drug associated with the incident, geographical location of incident, when the incident first occurred, when the incident was reported and if the incident was domestic violence related. A criminal incident is defined as an activity detected by or reported to police which: o involved the same offender(s); o involved the same victim(s); o occurred at the one location; o occurred during one uninterrupted period of time; o falls into one offence category; o falls into one incident type (for example, 'actual', 'attempted', 'conspiracy'). One incident may involve two offenders assaulting the same victim. This would be recorded as one assault incident. Alternatively, suppose a man reports to police that his neighbour demanded money from him, then assaulted him when he did not comply. For such an event, two criminal incidents are recorded because two distinct offence types are involved (demand money with menaces and assault) even though the same parties were involved at the same time and in the same place. For murder and manslaughter only, the counting units used are victims. Under the definition of a criminal incident (same parties, same time, same place, same offence and same incident type) one murder or manslaughter incident could involve two or more persons being killed. Because of the seriousness of these offences and their relatively small numbers, it was considered to be more appropriate to count the number of victims, rather than the number of criminal incidents. Hence, where one murder incident involves a person killing six people, six murder victims are counted. Recorded crime statistics for some offence categories do not accurately reflect the actual level of crime in the community. This is because the number of incidents recorded may be affected by extraneous factors which are not easily measured. In particular: * Many crimes which occur are not reported to police and will therefore not be recorded - for example, a large number of assaults, sexual assaults and robberies are not reported to police. * Recording of those offences which are detected by, rather than reported to police, are strongly affected by policing practices - examples of these are drug offences, drink driving offences, offensive behaviour and receiving stolen goods. Recorded rates for such offences do not accurately reflect actual rates. * Sydney Local Government Area, and therefore Inner Sydney Statistical Subdivision, has high recorded crime rates because, compared with other regions, the resident population is small relative to the number of people in the area. In other words the area has a high user population which is not reflected in the denominator of the rate calculation. * Recorded crime rates in Local Government Areas with small population sizes are not always a good indicator of offending. Crime rates in areas with populations under 3,000 may be unreliable and should be interpreted with caution
