Oral History Interview with Doris Lewis (SOH-061 video recording and transcript)
In this interview, Doris Lewis, Professor Emerita of Chemistry at Suffolk University, reflects upon her educational background, her teaching at Suffolk, and her professional work in the sciences. She begins with a review of her upbringing in West Virginia, the experiences and influences that propelled her to pursuing a professional career in chemistry, and some of the challenges of being a woman in the field of chemistry. She discusses her beginnings at Suffolk University, her tenure as chair, and her many contributions to the department over 37 years, including the expansion of the Forensic Science program, interdisciplinary collaborations with Suffolk’s MBA program, and creating a popular series of courses related to food and nutrition. Another notable development was her role in establishing a Suffolk University chapter of the American Chemical Society and the many professional development opportunities that were made available to her students as a result of this connection. From the Courtroom to the Boardroom: Transactional Oral Advocacy
Legal writing courses often teach oral advocacy skills with courtroom-based oral arguments, pitting plaintiff’s counsel against defendant’s counsel. However, oral advocacy skills are important for all lawyers – even those who never set foot in a courtroom. This article discusses how legal writing courses can develop oral advocacy skills by pairing traditional litigation-based oral argument exercises with transactional-based oral advocacy exercises and provides a sample exercise (which has received positive feedback from students) that professors can use to introduce transactional-based oral advocacy skills
