Lemna gibba L. is a vascular aquatic plant that lives in freshwater environments. This plant has been recommended for studies of pollution due to its exponential growth, its small size that makes it easy to handle in the laboratory as well as its resistance at exposure pollutant concentrations. Boron is an essential micronutrient for plants but high concentrations may limit their growth and alter their metabolism. This study describes one and two-dimensional electrophoretic patterns of total soluble proteins of L. gibba in the absence and presence of boron as H3BO3 at concentrations from 0 to 500 ppm. The results suggested that L. gibba has a differential protein expression in response to boron exposition. Techniques used were modified for L. Gibba, because these are specific to broccoli plants, and can be additional tests in environmental monitoring.

The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System (MBRS) extends over 1,000 km along the Caribbean Sea of Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, and Honduras. From 1997 onwards these four countries have considered an initiative to designate the MBRS as a Particularly Sensitive Sea Area (PSSA) by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). The purpose of the initiative is to protect the MBRS against the negative effects of international shipping activities. Such designation would also constitute a mechanism to facilitate conservation and sustainable use of the regions resources. This paper provides a summary of the available information about ecological, socio-economic and shipping activities in the Mexican portion of the MBRS (State of Quintana Roo) that might contribute to the joint countries effort by identifying strengths and weaknesses in complying with the guidelines established by IMO to designate the area as a PSSA.El Sistema Arrecifal Mesoamericano (SAM) es un área natural que se extiende aproximadamente 1,000 km a través de las costas caribeñas de México, Belice, Guatemala y Honduras.

Dynamics of seagrasses and associated algae in coral reef lagoons

Seagrass communities in tropical reef systems are situated in a distinct environmental setting than other seagrass beds around the world: they are exposed to high light intensities and low nutrient concentrations in carbonate sediments. Little is known about the forces which determine the community dynamics in these systems. Here we review studies realized over the last two decades at Puerto Morelos reef lagoon, Mexican Caribbean (Latitude 20o52´N) which highlight the dynamics of seagrasses and rooted macroalgae at time distinct frames. Daily fluctuations in physiology, growth and release of gametes or pollen are driven by light and possibly by herbivore pressure. Growth and sexual reproduction of the seagrasses and algae show seasonal patterns driven by the annual solar cycle. The temporal dynamics of the algae are more intense than those of the seagrasses, possibly due to their respective clonal expansion strategies and rates. Sexual recruitment serves to colonize cleared areas and maintains high genetic variability within populations as was shown for Thalassia testudinum. Hurricanes have a small effect on the seagrass-algal community, selectively removing certain species, but the foundation species T. testudinum and the main producer of calcareous sand Halimeda incrassata are resistant to hurricanes and full community recovery occurs within 2-3 y. Gradual but persistent changes in community structure (relatively more investment in above-ground biomass) and composition (higher relative dominance of faster growing species) reveal increasing input of nutrients in this originally considered pristine and oligotrophic habitat

In order to analyze the temporal variations of an estuarine fish community in a submerged aquatic vegetation habitat, we completed six bi-monthly 24 h sampling cycles (using a seine net) over a 1-year period (1989-1990). A total of 17,105 individuals, corresponding to 66 fish species were captured. Species richness and diversity showed significant differences among months and its seasonal variation was mainly related to temperature and salinity. At diel scale, richness was higher at night and diversity during the day, although these parameters showed no significant differences between these two periods. A non-metric multidimensional scaling showed that the ordination of the samples was mainly related to seasonal variation, which showed significant differences in species composition between months (MANOVA). Despite a wide dominance of Anchoa mitchilli throughout the year, seasonal changes in species composition were due to the cyclical succession of populations of other species, primarily determined by their physiological tolerances and secondly, by feeding patterns. Although there were no significant changes between day and night in overall species abundance, cluster analyses showed that coincidentally in months with lower nocturnal light (new moon and first quarter), diurnal and nocturnal samples were clearly segregated, and associated alternatively with samples of twilight hours. During daytime, pelagic-planktophagous species were abundant and benthic-predatory ones in the night, whereas the most abundant species showed a twilight pattern of activity. So, seasonal changes in fish community are mainly related to physicochemical conditions, whereas diel variation was slightly related to the light/darkness cycle.

    Get PDF
Based on information from official catch statistics of commercial fisheries in Mexico, for the period 1956 to 2009, an analysis is developed of the current state of the fisheries in terms of resource exploitation and of target trophic levels used by fishing. Two criteria were used: a classification based on the annual percent of catch volumes, considering the largest historical value as reference, to define the state of exploitation in five categories: collapse, over-fishing, maximum use, developing and underdeveloped. Also, trophic levels of species caught were used to estimate the mean trophic level of catches (NTMC) in different regions of the country, and from these estimates the use and potential impact on ecosystems was analyzed. Small scale fisheries dominate fishing activity; however, it is where less information is available. From 250 species recorded in the official statistics over the last 50 years, for 75 the information is insufficient for any analysis. The overall state of the fisheries has remained roughly unchanged since the late 1990s, however a higher proportion of resources tending to over-fishing were identified. For 46.3% of the resources their use is maximum; over-fishing is considered for 28.6%, 6.9% in development stage, and 18.3% collapsed. With the exception of the northern Peninsula of Yucatan, the use of species of low trophic levels dominates across the country (2.0 to 3.0). In the northern Peninsula of Yucatan, since the early 1970s, the NTMC was higher than 3.25, and for the early 1990s it was over 3.5. In the last decade however, a significant decrease is observed which is interpreted as a potential risk for the ecosystem, even when the main source of such decrement in the NTMC appears not to be only an effect of fishing. The region with higher proportion of deteriorated resources was the central Pacific coast, and the lowest the eastern Gulf of California region. The importance of maintaining a robust recording of catch statistics is highlighted, as well as a good control of the small scale fisheries since the potential impact on the ecosystems would be negative beyond the target resource, because areas of operation are typically shallow waters where juveniles of various species inhabit.

First record of Goodea atripinnis (Cyprinodontiformes: Goodeidae) in the state of Hidalgo (Mexico) and some considerations about its taxonomic position

    Get PDF
A population of blackfin goodea Goodea atripinnis was encountered in the Metztitlán Canyon Biosphere Reserve (Pánuco Basin, Hidalgo, Mexico). This species has a wide distribution across the Pacific Slope of Mexico, including the Lerma-Grande de Santiago basin, Ameca River, Magdalena Lake and the Balsas and Armería basins. Biometric data were used for identification and comparison to those of other putative members of the genus. The taxonomic identification and systematic position of this species are discussed. Goodea luitpoldii and G. gracilis are confirmed as synonyms with G. atripinnis. Comments on conservation implications of this species and their Pánuco Basin populations are given

Knowledge of the reproductive biology of a species is essential for fishery management and for its culture. However, there are no previous studies in Andalusia regarding the determination of the gametogenic cycle of Venerupis rhomboides. The aim of this paper was to determine the sex ratio of a Mediterranean population of this species, to describe the gametogenic cycle using histological techniques and the condition index and to determine the relations with temperature and chlorophyll a levels. The sex-ratio was 1:1 (?2 = 0.724; p > 0.25). Spawning and post-spawning specimens were observed throughout this study, with the highest peak in april. The condition index did not reflect exactly the reproductive activity of V. rhomboides. One possible explanation was the asynchronous character of the population. The more or less constant temperature, and the variations of chlorophyll a, did not seem to be limiting for gonadal maturation and spawning over the whole annual cycle.

Variations of juvenile abundance of brown shrimp (Farfantepenaeus aztecus) during its main period of migration in Mezquital Inlet, Tamaulipas are presented. Sampling was carried out from 2003 to 2007 between May and July and consisted in the use of an experimental net during the nocturnal period and ebb tide, three days before and after full and new moon. The information was complemented with abundance data of trawl research cruises carried out off the coast of Tamaulipas between May and July from 2003 to 2007. The results showed that the higher values of emigration (kg/night) occurred during the moon period in late May or early June, independently of the lunar phase. The higher values of emigration toward the sea are directly related to the increase in the abundance in the coastal and marine zones. These results are of great importance because the significance of the months of May and June was demonstrated, and can be useful to set the limits of the closed season of the inshore and offshore shrimp fishery.

The checklist of macroalgae for 17 localities in the coast of Chiapas involves 53 species, including 16 Chlorophyta, 8 Phaeophyta, and 29 species of Rhodophyta. From this list, 32 species grow in estuarine habitats. Floristic affinities between Chiapas estuaries and those from the Gulf of Mexico and north of Quintana Roo, together with the fossil record, suggest an early contact during the Eocene and Miocene. The presence of two red macroalgae (one of them not clearly classified) in the deep benthos from Chiapas off shore, confirm, biologically, the up-welling process detected at the area with physical and chemical techniques. Floristic affinities with the coasts of Oaxaca, Michoacán, Colima, Jalisco, Nayarit and Sinaloa, support the characterization of an area with strong interchange of tropical, sub tropical, and temperate elements. We called this phycofloristic-mosaic. We discuss on the possibilities of integrating theory of island biogeography to future phycological studies in estuarine habitats.
