    Get PDF
Using catch and effort data recorded in sport fishing conducted in the ports of Mazatlan, Sin. and Buena Vista, BCS, Mexico, during 1979-2005 and 1985-2006, respectively, build a year type or average, and developed a deterministic model in discrete time space to simulate the seasonal mass movements that perform the sailfish (Istiophorus platypterus) in the Exclusive Economic Zone of the Mexican Pacific. The model parameters are the migration rates that define the movements, which were estimated by minimizing the squared differences between predicted by the model and the catch per unit effort (number of organisms per trip) observed in sport fishing in typical year. The results are consistent with the existence of a single stock in the region, which conducts coastal latitudinal displacement during the summer from a point south of the Mexican Pacific, toward the north in direction to the Gulf of California, and then returning to the south at the end this season. It shows a better fit of the model when simulating a mortality rate of 0,019 times per day abundance for the northern Mexican Pacific (equivalent to z = 0.013/month). This scenario is consistent with previously reported conceptual migration patterns, due to this it is considered that the proposed model can be a useful tool for predicting changes in regional abundance and in general to elucidate the behavior of the stock.

The cownose ray Rhinoptera bonasus is one of the most abundant batoid species in southeastern Gulf of Mexico, where it is occasionally caught and salt-dried for human consumption. To date, there are no estimates of the reproductive parameters which are needed to assess the dynamics of the local population of this species, and its vulnerability to fisheries. The analysis of 136 females with a size range of 43-106 cm disc width (DW) and 56 males with a size range of 43-93 cm DW, allowed to estimate that the lengths at maturity (DW50%) are 89.1 cm DW and 76.4 cm DW for females and for males, respectively. The female reproductive cycle is apparently biennial. The gestation lasts close to 12 months, gestation and vitellogenesis are consecutive, and ovulation and parturition occur from mid-March to mid-June. The results indicate a brood size of one and the lengths at birth ranged between 37.5 and 43 cm DW. Apparently, the sizes at maturity estimated for the southeastern and the northern Gulf of Mexico are different, because the data for the northern Gulf of Mexico indicate DW values of 65.3 and 64.2 cm for females and males, respectively. The biennial reproductive cycle of the southeastern Gulf of Mexico population seems different from that of the northwestern Atlantic, which is apparently annual.

In this review I discuss the importance of the processes of trophic transfer of trace elements (TTET) in aquatic food chains and webs, and suggest some tools and strategies for their study. The ET (essential and nonessential) are trophically transferred and can accumulate up to toxic levels in organisms, populations and communities. The processes of TTET are very complex due to the many factors that affect them. The characteristic high productivity, diversity and environmental seasonality associated with subtropical coastal ecosystems, pose additional complexity to the already difficult study of such processes. Todays modern techniques and methods of study facilitate the understanding and evaluation of such processes. Among these are the stable isotopes of C and N, which are used to define the species trophic position in an ecosystem and establish food web structures and trace energy and ET paths. There are mathematical models (e.g. kinetic accumulation model) that allow the assessment of TTET processes based on four basic mechanisms (ingestion, assimilation, excretion and growth). These mechanisms can be measured experimentally in the laboratory by using radiotracers and heavy metals isotopes artificially enriched. The increasing pollution by, together with the simultaneous eutrophication occurring in the Mexican coasts, emphasizes the urgency to study and assess TTET processes, as well as the derived environmental and public health risks.

    Get PDF
Analysis of scales of Lutjanus guttatus (Steindachner, 1869) allowed the identification of three growth rings. Similar data were obtained with kernel density method. Values of the von Bertalanffys growth equation are: L? = 96.60 cm, W? = 7,508 g, K = 0.22 years-1 and to = -0.10 years. Maximum values of the condition factor occur during February and June and were preceded by two months of high values of the gastric repletion index. Maximum reproductive period was during April and August. Recruitment periods were from November to January and April to June. The recruitment length is 16 cm. The highest values of the hepatosomatic index are during December to June and showed an inversely proportional relation to the gonadosomatic index. First sexual maturity length is 30.63 cm and its longevity of 13.5 years. Forty one percent of L. guttatus individuals captured in Bufadero Bay are sexually immature, therefore we suggest a minimum capture size of 45 cm (age 2.5 years) and a closed season from August to September

    Get PDF
The geoduck clam Panopea globosa, is a commecially important species due to its high demand. In order to maintain a sustainable fishery, it is necessary to determine its regional distribution and the levels of exploitable biomass. These are contingent on establishing the baseline spatial distribution of clam beds and their density in order to manage the resource through quotas. These population variables were determined in the region between Guaymas to Bahía de Lobos, Sonora. Bed delineation and density estimation involved sampling an area spanning 1 x 1.5 km between 0 and 30 m depth. Ten beds were delineated with an average density of 0.546 ± 0.17 clamsm?2. The highest density was found in a southern bed (1.202 ± 0.07 clams m?2) and the lowest in a northern bed (0.43 ± 0.28 clams m?2). We conclude that quotas assigned by individual beds could be the best management strategy in the region.

The aim of this research was to evaluate the genotoxicity of the surface waters of mouths of the rivers Aconcagua, Maipo and Catapilco stream on fish Mugil cephalus and Odontesthes brevianalis. In the waters of these rivers and stream in situ, the parameters pH, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, total dissolved solids were measured. The concentration of copper, zinc and lead were measured in water and gills tissue. The genotoxicity was determined through the comet assay and micronucleus frequency. The results show that copper concentration in water was higher in the Catapilco stream followed by the Maipo river. The lead concentration was higher in the Maipo river, while that zinc was higher in the Aconcagua river. The zinc concentration in gills was greater than copper and lead in both species. The lead concentration was higher in M. cephalus in the Maipo river, while the copper was in the same species but in the Aconcagua river.. The highest genetic damage was observed in both species of fish of the Maipo River. The lowest genetic damage was in O. brevianalis from Aconcagua river. No relationship was found between genetic damage and concentration of metals in gills. In conclusion the surface waters of the mouths of Aconcagua and Maipo rivers, and Catapilco stream contains chemical agents that provoke genotoxicity in fishes.

Calcification of the filamentous cyanobacterium Blennothrix ganeshii in calcareous tropical streams of central Mexico region

    Get PDF
Geochemical, mineralogical and microbiological data from four freshwater streams in central region of Mexico indicate the importance of Blennothrix ganeshii mats (Cyanobacteria, Oscillatoriales) in promoting the formation of calcium carbonate crystals. The streams were characterized by alkaline waters and relative physicochemical stability during three seasons (cold dry, warm dry and warm rainy). Calcification took the form of a thick, dense layer of calcium carbonate crystals surrounding the extracellular polymeric substances produced by B. ganeshii filaments, giving an appearance of micritic tubes (structures formed by crystallization in the spaces between filaments) along the sheath surfaces. The precipitate was analyzed using X-ray diffraction and energy dispersal X-ray spectrometry, and the calcite crystal habit was determined. The photosynthetic activity of cyanobacterial growth and the presence of abundant extracellular polymeric substances and epiphytic species promote the absorption of ions and mineral nucleation on the surface of the sediment and contribute to the formation of travertine in tropical regions

    Get PDF
The objective was to determine the effect of temperature on the development of Australian crayfish Cherax quadricarinatus juveniles and its thermal preference under laboratory conditions. The determination of the effect of temperature was made based on the results of growth and survival of juvenile crayfish C. quadricarinatus. The crayfish were cultivated and fed with commercial shrimp pellets for 90 days at four different temperatures (20, 25, 28, and 31 °C). The greatest weight increase and total biomass were obtained at 28 °C and the highest survival (83%) at 25 °C. The thermal preference of crayfish after the assay was also examined in crayfish of each treatment. The thermal preference of crayfish was always between 23 °C and 26 °
