A new cryptic species of Leberis Smirnov, 1989 (Crustacea, Cladocera, Chydoridae) from the Mexican semi-desert region, highlighted by DNA barcoding
DNA barcoding, based in the sequence of a gene from the mitochondria, the Citochrome C oxidase (CO1), has been proved to be an excellent tool to identify many animal groups from invertebrates to vertebrates. After barcode several Cladocera, we gathered evidence about the existence of two Leberis species in the north of Mexico. Minimal CO1 divergence between both taxa was 14.3%, due to the GC% in the third codon position. A detailed morphological analyses uncovered one of the species as L. davidi, dwelling from South America to Mexico and the other as Leberis chihuahuensis new species, apparently restricted to semi-desert temporary pools. The parthenogenetic female of the latter is characterized by a small size, blunt rostrum, long and curved spine in the first exopodal segment of the second antenna, absence of accessory seta and sensilla in the first thoracic limb, and a brush-shaped seta in the fourth limb, among other characters. Males have a long and narrow postabdomen and a series of similar sized spinules in the posterior margin of the valves. By the first time a cladoceran is described from both views, the morphology and CO1 sequence
Taxonomic composition and temporal fluctuation of the phytoplankton community inhabiting the urban, hypertrophic shallow lake Tezozomoc, D.F. was analyzed. Water samples were taken monthly at the littoral and limnetic areas of the lake, from September 2003 to August 2004. Temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, conductivity (K25), chlorophyll a, and nutrients (N and P) concentrations were measured. Phytoplankton was identified and counted including the fraction smaller than 2 µm. Fifty phytoplankton species were identified, being Chlorophyta the dominant group. Two species belonging to the genus Microcystis showed high abundances in the lake from September to December 2003. Merismopedia punctata, Selenastrum minutum, Chlamydomonas globosa and Monoraphidium caribeum, as well as picophytoplankton, were dominant. Environmental and biological data clearly reflected two different seasons in the lake: one cold and dry season (September to March) and the second, warm and wet (April to August). Along the first season, mean values of water temperature (17.6 ºC), nutrients (P-PO4 = 2.21, N-NO3 = 0.4 mg L-1) and chlorophyll a (200 ?g L-1) were lower, while K25 (985 µS cm-1) and dissolved oxygen (10.1 mg L-1) concentrations were the higher. Dominant species along the period were C. globosa, Cyclotella meneghiniana, M. griffithii, Cryptomonas ovata and Microcystis spp. The second period had the higher mean values of water temperature (21 ºC), nutrients concentration (P-PO4 = 3.31, N-NO3 = 3.3 mg L-1) and clorophyll a (295 ?g L-1), while K25 (808 µS cm-1) and dissolved oxygen concentrations (6.8 mg L-1) decreased. S. minutum, M. caribeum, Chlorogonium minimum and the picophytoplankton were dominant. Identified species and the environmental conditions values indicated the hypertrophic state of the Tezozomoc lake.
Further observations on the strobilation of the coronate scyphozoan Linuche unguiculata (thimble jellyfish)
In nature, strobilation of Linuche unguiculata is triggered by an increase in water temperature. However, the results showed that under laboratory conditions, it can be induced when scyphistomae are submitted to a sudden drop of 5 °C
The egg production rate (EPR) was estimated for Centropages furcatus in Bahia de La Paz, Baja California Sur, Mexico during 2003. This species is one of the most abundant and frequent copepod in the zone. The highest egg production in carbon estimations for C. furcatus were observed in summer (1.20 ± 0.7 µg C female-1 d-1) and the lowest was found during spring (0.58 ± 0.42 µg C female-1 d-1). The longest prosome length (PL) was registered in summer (1.15 ± 0.05 mm) and the shorter during autumn (1.01 ± 0.04 mm). No significant correlation was found in a daily base between EPR and PL with chlorophyll a (Chl a) concentration neither the sea surface temperature (SST). In temporal scale, in winter, spring and summer the SST was low (<23.2°C) in contrast, autumn presented high SST (>27 °C). Chl a was low (<1 mg m-3) in winter, spring and autumn, whereas in summer it was high (>3 mg m-3). Although the correlation was non significant between the biological parameters and the environmental variables (p> 0.05), the species showed high values of LP and TPH in summer when SST were low and the concentration of Chl a was high.
The objective was to analyze the abundance and distribution of snappers and groupers in the Yucatan shelf. We analyzed forty-five samples of ichthyoplankton that were taken from oceanographic research (Yucatan03-A) during September 2003. Superficial tows were made with a Bongo net. A total of 3,963 organisms were collected, they belong to 50 fish families. Three families (Carangidae, Gobiidae y Clupeidae) represented more than 50% of the density. Lutjanidae and Serranidae families were within the nine most abundant families, with a total density of 713.8 ±60 org./100 m3 . Serranidae family is represented by species of the genus Anthias, Diplectrum, Epinephelus, Liopropoma, Serranus and Epinephelus fulvus, whereas Lutjanidae is represented by Lutjanus analis, L. campechanus, L. griseus and L. synagris. The highest density species was L. synagris, representing 28.9% of material reviewed, followed by E. fulvus, L. analis and L. campechanus. The analysis of the cluster of stations allowed identifying three oceanographic zones at a horizontal level: West, Center and Upwelling (in the East). The groupers larvae were distributed mainly in the Center whereas snappers larvae were distributed in the East of the shelf, this suggests that the spawning of these families occurred in different parts of the shelf, avoiding in this way the competition for food in their first larval stages. The current of Yucatan promotes an Ekman transportation that produces an upwelling that generates an increment of phytoplankton, zooplankton and ichthyoplakton that favors the fish recruitment, a fast growth and a diminution of their larval stage.
The purpose of the present study was to evaluate if the available phosphorus and nitrogen concentrations were limiting the phytoplankton biomass in Lake Alchichica. Here we present a series of nutrient enrichment experiments (nitrogen, phosphorus, nitrogen + phosphorus) conducted in the two characteristic stages of the lakes hydrodynamics: stratification and mixing. We followed up the algal growth potential through in vivo fluorometric analysis of chlorophyll a changes expressed as relative change percentage regarding the control. The nutrient enrichment experiment during the circulation period did not modify significantly the phytoplankton growth or the species. Opposite, during the stratification period, the nutrient addition promoted the phytoplankton growth significantly by modifying its composition and abundance. The results showed that nitrogen is the most likely nutrient limiting phytoplankton growth in Lake Alchichica as has been found in other tropical lakes, opposite to temperate lakes where phosphorus has been found to be the limiting nutrient. The enrichment of one nutrient without the other produced only a brief growth enhancement until depletion of the other nutrient occured. However, when both nitrogen and phosphorus were added, enhanced algal growth were sustained and produced substantial and detectable responses.
An aspect to consider during the captivity of the American crocodile (Crocodylus acutus), is that related to the individuals growth. In order to evaluate this issue, four natural nests from La Ventanilla, Oaxaca were selected, and kept in captivity one year. Based on monthly measurements of length and weight several growth models were applied. Allometric growth was observed due to the positive relationship between length and weight. Of the two parameter growth models used, the lineal type was the most appropriated. Of the three parameter growth models used, the von Bertalanffy type was the most adequate. Mean growth for the studied individuals was 0.614 mm day-1, or 1.84 cm month-1. This represents low values in comparison to other studies from Jalisco, Mexico and Brasil. Therefore, we consider it important to check the conditions that prevail during captivity.
The Penaeid shrimp planktonic juvenile distribution and abundance from Laguna Madre were analyzed, based in samples collected in the months of October 1997, January, May and July 1998 with a conical net of 50 cm diameter and 505 µm mesh size, with an adapted flowmeter; moreover water salinity and superficial temperture data were recorded. The size among species was compared with a variance analysis (ANOVA) and a multiple ranks test (SNK). Farfantepenaeus aztecus was the most abundant species with 84.5% of the total abundance, following by L. setiferuswith 10.6% and F. duorarum with 3.4%. The abundance of F. aztecus and L. setiferus was greatest during the winter. Significant differences were observed between the sizes of juveniles of F. aztecus (11.7 mm) and L. setiferus (11.8 mm) with respect to the size of F. duorarum (11.0 mm) (F = 7.81, p = 0.05; SNK = 0.71, p = 0.05; SNK = 0.83, p = 0.05).
