The effect of feeding frequency on the growth and survival of juvenile freshwater crayfish Cherax quadricarinatus with initial mean weight of 0.89 ± 0.06 g was evaluated in a 60-day study. Juveniles were fed with four different feeding frequencies: every 24 h (C1), 12 h (C2), 6 h (C3) and 4 h (C4), with a 35% crude protein diet. Specific Growth Rates (SGR) of 3.02 and 2.79%/day showed that feeding frequency treatments C3 and C4 maximize growth of juvenile C. quadricarinatus, reaching final mean weights of 4.7 and 5.4 g, biomasses of 253.2 and 311.8/m2, and Feed Conversion Ratios (FCR's) of 1.8 and 1.2, respectively. Treatments, C1 and C2 showed significantly higher FCRs. Survival ranged from 86.7 to 98.3%, and was statistically different among the experimental treatments, except for organisms fed with C1 and C2. Final weights of juvenile C. quadricarinatus showed that a feeding frequency of at least three times a day (C3) was significantly better. However, in terms of biomass, treatment C4 was better. The information obtained will contribute to improve the understanding of the dynamics of distribution of feeds and to correlate it with the nutritional condition of juvenile C. quadricarinatus.

Methanogenesis and methane oxidation in wetlands. Implications in the global carbon cycle

Wetlands are important ecosystems on the Earth. They are distinguished by the presence of water, saturated anoxic soils, and different kinds of vegetation adapted to this conditions. Organic matter in these environments is mineralized mainly in the sediments throughout anaerobic processes where sulfate reduction is one of the most important terminal stages of anaerobic decomposition in coastal wetlands, whereas methanogenesis is important in freshwater wetlands. In this environments, methane, a greenhouse gas, is produced as a result of the activity of a large and diverse group of methanogenic bacteria (Domain Archaea). The generated methane can be diffused to the atmosphere or can be oxidized by several microorganisms under aerobic and anaerobic conditions, such microorganisms intercept and consume this gas diminishing its emission to the atmosphere. The production and consumption of methane in wetlands involve complex physiological processes of plants and microorganisms, which are regulated by climatic and edaphic factors, mainly soil temperature and water table level. The interaction of these processes with heterogeneous environments results in large variations in the methane fluxes. Because methane is an important gas that contribute with as much as 15% to the greenhouse effect, several studies had analyzed methane production and its emission from wetlands. These studies established that natural and agricultural freshwater wetlands represent approximately 40% of the sources of atmospheric methane. However, most of the ecological studies assessing the production, consumption, and emission of methane have been performed in boreal and temperate wetlands, yet there are few studies evaluating these activities in tropical wetlands, particularly in Brazil and Panama. In Mexico there are not studies contributing to this respect

We examine the concepts of parsimony, likelihood and posterior probability, which are central to alternative methods for selecting optimal topologies in phylogenetic reconstruction. Complexity and mathematical sophistication of the description of the space of trees and of exploration methods based on parsimony, likelihoods and Bayesian posterior probabilities points to educational requirements demanding an unavoidable knowledge base in the philosophy of science, statistical theory and methods, and molecular biology. Such higher education becomes necessary in order to understand the operation of diverse available methods, but most importantly, to be able to discern their theoretical basis and to critically decide which option to use in different aspects of taxonomic research. Importance of the need of an informed use of methods becomes evident in the tendency to use either parsimony or probabilistic methods (likelihood and Bayesian) without exploring epistemological implications of such approaches in phylogenetic reconstruction. Undoubtedly, interest in methods of phylogenetic reconstruction is expanding. Therefore, it is important that phylogenetic biologists consider carefully the epistemological basis and relevance of methods they use in the selection of optimal topologies.

Phytoplankton size-fractionated chlorophyll-a off Baja California during winter, spring, and summer 2008

    Get PDF
Spatial and temporal size-fractionated phytoplankton chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) variability as pico-nanoplankton (PN, 0.4- 8.0 µm) and nano-microplankton (NM, >8.0 µm) off Baja California is shown. Chl-a samples from the upper 200 m were obtained from nearshore, offshore, and intermediate locations during winter, spring, and summer 2008. PN-Chl-a contribution to phytoplankton biomass was ~4 times higher than NM fraction. Chl-a PN/NM ratio increased toward offshore, while total Chl-a (PN + NM) decreased. Seasonally, offshore phytoplankton cells abundance had a comparable contribution for both size-fractions, without an apparent change by the integrated water-column total Chl-a (60 mg m?2). Vertical Chl-a profiles were similar for winter and summer seasons. The highest Chl-a concentration and phytoplankton-cells abundance arose in spring, predominantly for NM at nearshore locations, reaching from 2.7-fold (nearshore: middle) to 4.2-fold (middle: offshore) ratios. Phytoplankton Chl-a increased from winter to spring (5.4 times), with maximum contribution of NM (6.6 times) at nearshore zones. Water-column integrated phytoplankton abundance was 5-fold higher in spring than winter, and 2-fold over summer. Using optical microscopy, dinoflagellate cells were the most abundant and variable phytoplankton recognizable group at intermediate zone. Smaller phytoplankton cells sustained approximately continuous biomass off Baja California. The spatial and temporal phytoplankton biomass variability was mainly influenced by an increase of larger cells as result of spring coastal upwelling events

From the inventory data on the marine biodiversity of Cuba´s northern and south-eastern coasts collected during the period from July 2011 to April 2012, three new genus and five new species of Cuban algae were for the first time collected: two from the phylum Rhodophyta, one from the phylum Ochrophyta and two from the phylum Chlorophyta. The three genus are Taonia, Rhipiliopsis and Apoglossum, and the five species are Taonia abbottiana, Rhipiliopsis reticulata, Apoglossum ruscifolium, Caulerpa nummularia and Liagora tsengii. The last one is considered rare since it had only been seen in its locality type and more recently found in Cozumel (Mexico). Specimens were collected on rocky substratum from 2 to 15 meters deep. A detailed description on morphology, reproduction and distribution is presented herein as well as illustrations of the five species. Specimens were deposit in the marine collections of the Coastal Ecosystems Research Center (HCIEC), with copies at the National Aquarium of Cuba (HNAC). These findings were made in poorly studied areas of the Cuban archipelago and contribute to know about their distribution in the West Atlantic.

The composition and abundance of the jellyfish present in 42 zooplankton samples obtained from the Laguna de Terminos, Campeche, during March and October 2009 and November 2010, were analyzed. Seven species were identified, six of them are new geographic records for the zone, and one (Phialopsis diegensis) is also a new record for the Mexican Atlantic. Considering the entire study period, the most abundant species was Helgicirrha schulzei with 52.24% followed by Bougainvillia muscus with 18.04%. The presence of P. diegensis and other previously unrecorded species in the area could be the result of the oceanic influence in the system or are invasive non-indigenous species derived from the impact of human activities and ship traffic, both activities mainly affecting the zooplankton communities of coastal lagoons.

In this study, we propose to evaluate the blood biochemistry as diagnosis technique of a pathologic process in tilapias Oreochromis niloticus by means of infections induced by Streptococcus sp. or by the activation of the immune response induced by antigens of Cichlidogyrus spp. Specifically, variations of some metabolites from the blood biochemistry were evaluated in experimentally infected tilapia Oreochromis niloticus. The organisms were intraperitoneally challenged (IP) with individual antigenic extracts of Streptococcus sp. (STREP Group, n = 10) and Cichlidogyrus spp. (C-EXP Group, n = 10), respectively, while 10 other tilapia were inoculated with a saline solution buffer (SS Group) and were used as immunization control. Another group of 70 tilapias was maintained in aquaculture conditions included the baseline group (LB). The negative control (CN) included 10 fish free of infection. The blood chemistry (metabolites and ions) were tested in a microplate format. No differences were observed between the LB and the CN groups (p > 0.05). Only fish injected with Streptococcus sp. (STREP) and Cichlidogyrus spp. (C-EXP) were significantly different with the values of glucose, total proteins, albumin, and globulins, when comparing with LB fish (p < 0.05). Furthermore, the cholesterol, calcium and the chlorine changed significantly in the STREP fish (p > 0.05). The results from the induced infections with Streptococcus sp. and Cichlidogyrus spp., respectively, modified some parameters of the blood biochemistry of tilapia that could be used for some preliminary diagnosis of infectious diseases.
