Distribution of Sicydium Valenciennes 1837 (Pisces: Gobiidae) in Mexico and Central America

    Get PDF
Gobies of the genus Sicydium Valenciennes are widespread in Mexico and Central America, but have a different distribution pattern on the Atlantic and Pacific slopes of the region. On the Pacific slope, where mountain ranges are found near the coast and the coastal plain is narrow, Sicydium is continuously distributed in rivers from Mazatlán, Sinaloa, Mexico, to central Panama. On the Atlantic slope, Sicydium is known from to three disjunct areas where coastal mountain ranges are present, central Mexico, northern Honduras, and northeastern Costa Rica and northern Panama, and has not been recorded from intervening areas with broad coastal plains. The amphidromous life history of Sicydium gobies may prevent them from occupying rivers flowing through broad coastal plains. Sicydium gobies spawn in rocky mountainous river reaches and their larvae drift downstream to the ocean where they begin feeding. In rivers crossing broad coastal plains the distance to the ocean is relatively long, and I hypothesize that newly hatched larvae might starve before they reached their marine feeding habitat or that post-larvae might starve on their return migration up river to adult habitat

Bibliographic revision of species from the Tribe Callithamnieae (Ceramiaceae, Rhodophyta) previously recorded from the Atlantic Mexico s shores was realized. We also checked herbariums specimens housed at different herbaria. In addition, some samples of Callithamnieae were carried out in twenty localities at the Atlantic coast of Mexico from 1983 to 2000. Analysis of this information showed us that this tribe contains three genera and five species. The best-represented genus of this Tribe was Aglaothamnion Feldmann-Mazoyer with three species. A. cordatum (Børgesen) Feldmann-Mazoyer is recorded from Cozumel island, Quintana Roo to Tampico, Tamaulipas, while A. boergesenii (Aponte et Ballantine) L Hardy-Halos et Rueness and A. herveyi (M. Howe) Aponte, Ballantine et Norris only were found in the Caribbean Sea. The distribution of Callithamnion Lyngbye and Seirospora Harvey, with one species each, is restricted to Quintana Roo and Veracruz. The taxa of this Tribe are not easily noticed because of their epiphytic habit, filamentous forms and small size. Morphological descriptions, drawings, distributional range, reproductive stage, substrate, tidal level, wave exposure, keys for determinations and specimens examinated are included.

The gafftopsail catfish (Bagre marinus) is one of the species of most importance to fisheries in the Gulf of Mexico, particularly in the coastal region of Tabasco State, where it is captured abundantly almost all year round in shallow coastal zones. Although, there is neither ecological nor biological information about this species in the coastal zone of Tabasco State. This study aims to describe the feeding habits of gafftopsail catfish. Seasonal changes in the diet and its relation with reproductive period will also be discussed. Analyzes of stomachs contents of 430 individuals (97 females and 68 males for dry season, 100 females and 38 males for rainy season and 83 females and 44 males for nortes season) obtained from two commercial landings located in the Chiltepec municipality, Paraiso, Tabasco along one year (May 1996 to April 1997). The numerical percentage (%N), weight percentage (%W) and frequency occurrence indexes were calculated for the groups preys. These three indexes were comparing with the Kendall concordance coefficient, concluding that three indexes provide the same information about importance of prey inside diet, using the %F for posteriors analysis. Brachyurans were the more important preys inside the annual diet of species, reached a maximum frequency of occurrence during dry season (74.6 %F for females and 92.7 %F for males). Few seasonal changes in diet of both sexes were observed, with a progressive increase of occurrence of fishes and diminution of stomatopods and penaeid shrimps. No significant differences were finding in total diet between females and males. The variation of the proportion of fullness stomachs and fullness weight index along the year can be related with the reproductive behavior of species

Aquatic macroinvertebrates have been widely used as bioindicators of the response of aquatic ecosystems to human activities that affect them. Thus, their use as bioindicators is included in different protocols for the ecological assessment of streams. Goals. This study assessed the ensemble of aquatic macroinvertebrates in Dali Creek along with its ecological condition. Methods. Six surveys over seven reaches of the Creek were conducted from April 2012 through November 2013. The multihabitat method was used to collect the macroinvertebrates, and a visual assessment was used to study the state of the aquatic habitat and the riparian vegetation. Results. The results show that Aquatic macroinvertebrates are abundant and diverse, particularly at the reference points located upstream on the Dalí Creek and its tributary QR2. It was found significant differences between microhabitats sampled composition (K-W p<0.05). The BMWP index displayed a condition of high quality, with very clean water to clean condition. Similarly, the IHF index showed that all the sampling points present excellent condition except the QR3 point. Finally, the IMEERA index revealed that the ecological status of stream Dalí and QR2 tributary is very good to good; while for the sites QR3 the condition is very bad, despite the natural restoration process of the stream channel. Conclusions. The relationships between structural complexity of the physical habitat and the macroinvertebrates diversity are interesting aspects for studying streams in the Colombian Andes.

Many streams of Uruguay suffer eutrophication and physical pollution due to intensive farming. The Colorado stream, in the coastal plain of the Rio de la Plata, is a particular case, which also receives winery debris. Macroinvertebrates give comprehensive information status of aquatic systems. Goals. To assess the overall environmental quality of the river Colorado, both water quality and the habitat and macroinvertebrate fauna was studied. Methods. Six sites were sampled: two on the Colorado stream and two on each headwater: Benitez and Rocha creeks. Results. Benitez creek receives effluents from wineries and presented high conductivity and low oxygen concentration. Rocha creek instead shows higher levels of nutrients and lower conductivity. We identified 787 invertebrates belonging to 3 orders of crustaceans and 6 of insects, 2 families of Diptera, 7 of molluscs and 2 of annelids. In Rocha creek taxonomic richness was below average. The study sites downstream in Rocha creek and Colorado river had richer and more equilibrated communities indicating a possible recovery. Conclusions. In all sites tolerant species to organic pollution dominated. Rocha creek suffers eutrophication, but still has some self-purification capacity downstream, while Benitez creek deteriorates perhaps from impact of wineries, which remains until it meets the Rocha creek, interrupting the recovery process.

Background. Stream ecosystems reflect human impacts on the environment. An understanding of the threats affecting these ecosystems and the development of tools to assess them is key for the conservation and management of aquatic ecosystems. Puerto Rico is an oceanic island with dense human presence and strong pressures over freshwater resources that result in the degradation of water bodies. Aquatic macroinvertebrates respond to pollution and are good indicators of anthropogenic impacts on streams. Goals. To describe major threats to the ecological condition of streams in Puerto Rico and introduce two biomonitoring indices based on macroinvertebrates that allow for the assessment of stream condition on the island. Methods. We proposed a standardized methodology for the use of the Biological Monitoring Working Party (BMWP) and Family Biotic Index (FBI) modified for Puerto Rico. Results. Major threats to aquatic ecosystems in Puerto Rico are associated with urbanization, water extraction, and untreated water discharges. For the elaboration of the indices, a tolerance value was assigned to each of the 87 taxonomic groups reported for Puerto Rico. Based on stream sampling, impact scales were developed for the BMWP-PR and FBI-PR. In addition, a standardized methodology is proposed to avoid sampling biases. Conclusions. The conservation status of rivers in Puerto Rico is relatively good compared with other tropical regions. The indices proposed (BMWP-PR, FBI-PR) are the first developed for the island with the goal of evaluating the ecological condition of streams. The indices are proposed as a starting point, future efforts should focus on the development of additional tools.Antecedentes.

Background. Aquatic systems of Tabasco have been affected by various anthropogenic activities (Bueno-Soria, et al., 2005), however the knowledge of the aquatic insects is emerging, so it is important to know your current status in the state. Goals. To determine the distribution, abundance and diversity of aquatic insect fauna in streams of Tabasco. Methods. Samples were conducted at 38 locations during the years 2010 to 2013 in daytime and multihabitat effort. Results. Environmental variables as temperature, dissolved oxygen, conductivity and salinity showed significant differences between municipalities with p= 0.006. Principal component analysis ordination by municipalities showed 60% of the total variance explained by conductivity and dissolved oxygen for the first axis and the depth and the pH for the second factor. A total of 5,315 individuals, belonging to 11 orders and 56 families were collected. The highest diversity was recorded in Tacotalpa, Tenosique and Huimanguillo with H=2.87; H=1.09 and H=0.5, and richness were 42, 29 and 25 families respectively, and minimal richens was in Cardenas with six families. Tacotalpa and Tenosique represents 78% of the total density. In Tacotalpa dominated: Phylopotamidae, Chironomidae and Caenidae; Tenosique, Caenidae, Chironomidae and Coenagrionidae. While in Cardenas were Baetidae and Notonectidae. Conclusions. Highest riparian vegetation coberture presented in municipalities of Tacotalpa, Tenosique and Huimanguillo regulates insect composition. However the composition and structure of aquatic insects depends on multiple biotic and abiotic variables.Antecedentes.
