    Get PDF
Biomass changes of seaweed assemblages in four locations in a temperate-tropical transition zone were analyzed between October 1996 and August 1997. Locations with lower temperature, a high index of upwelling, and high quantities of hard substrate presented the largest values of biomass of seaweed (El Cardoncito (7.2 kg m-2), and Las Boyitas (6.2 kg m-2)) and the biggest quantity of species of temperate affinity. Conversely, El Datilito (0.366 kg m-2), with a higher temperature, no evidence of upwelling, sandy substrate, and located in protected shallow waters, presented the lowest values of biomass and the lowest proportion of temperate affinity seaweed. The PCA and similarity analysis showed a close relationship between El Cardoncito and Las Boyitas. El Datilito was categorized as independent location, while Chester Rock (4.3 kg m-2) displayed intermediate characteristics. The close relationship observed between the first two locations can be explained by the similarity of their high biomass and physiographic and environmental characteristics. El Datilito has very different physiographic and environmental characteristics and a very low biomass.

Coral reefs worldwide are being destroyed at an alarming rate, therefore it is necessary to overcome the current trend. In order to identify coral-reef conservation areas in the coast of Oaxaca and compare the design suggested by these methods against the one currently proposed by the Parque Nacional Huatulco (PNH). A presence/absence coral-reefs data base was analyzed by taxonomic diversity, hotspot analysis, complementarity algorithms, and random accumulation of reserve sites. There was a lack of concordance between the reserve-selection approaches employed. Cumulative species-site curves indicated that complementarity maximized the rate of accumulation of species, followed by the hotspot and the random accumulation approaches. Just two out of ten sites with conservation priority value, are protected by the PNH. Considering the number of species already protected by the PNH (62.5 %), its designis sub-optimal since: a) it does not include 100 % of the species, b) populations of species necessary to maintain connectivity between eastern Pacific reef systems are excluded, and c) it includes redundant unnecessary sites under the complementarity principle. Besides suggesting coral-reef conservation areas for the coast of Oaxaca, this study aims to encourage research on the design of marine protected areas (MPA) in order to establish a network of MPA which would allow a sustainable management of Mexican reefsLos arrecifes coralinos a nivel mundial presentan una tasa de desaparición acelerada, por lo que es necesario contrarrestar esta tendencia.

Changes in the crustacean community of a tropical rocky intertidal shore: is there a pattern?

A tropical rocky intertidal community in Montepio, southern Veracruz, Mexico, was sampled throughout a year to determine the extent of the changes in species composition and abundance. The study focused on the crustacean community, of which 49 species were identified. The community was characterized by a high species replacement rate, with 38.7% of the species appearing only once, 10% appeared twice, 16.3% were present in three different samples, and the remaining 34.7% were collected in 4 or more monthly samplings. Species diversity (H) varied constantly, while evenness remained relatively high and constant. An ordination analysis indicates that the crustacean community was dominated by the occurrence of rare species (47%). A cluster analysis, based on the Bray-Curtis similarity coefficient, shows that only a maximum of two consecutive samplings can have more than 50% similarity, reflecting the constant changes that occur in this community. When compared to the other numerically important phyla in the community, crustacean densities ranked third after annelids and mollusks. With such highly variable species composition and the absence of defined seasonal patterns, we propose that non-local processes, such as the strong winter winds (northers) and a long season of tropical storms, are acting upon the community preventing the establishment of species for long periods of time and maintaining the biodiversity

A study was performed in two commercial shrimp farms in the province of Guasave, north of Sinaloa, Mexico, to assess the effects of the presence of the white spot syndrome virus (WSSV) and of water exchange on the growth rate, production, and survival of the Pacific white shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei, during the fall-winter season in semi-intensive culture ponds. The experiment consisted of four treatments; in the first (T1), three earthen ponds with water exchange, were stocked with PCR-positive for white-spot syndrome virus (WSSV) postlarvae. In the second (T2), three earthen ponds were stocked likewise (PCR-positive), but without water exchange. In the third (T3), three earthen ponds, with water exchange were stocked with PCR-negative for white-spot syndrome virus (WSSV) postlarvae. In the fourth (T4), three earthen ponds were stocked likewise (PCR-negative), but without water exchange. The average growth rates were 0.56, 0.56, 0.80, and 0.75 g/week for T1, T2, T3, and T4, respectively. Survival was 23.2% (T1), 26.1% (T2), 64.3% (T3), and 66.1% (T4). Production ranged between 252.60 and 847.00 kg/ha, with the lowest production in T2 and the highest in T3. Feed conversion ratio ranged from 1.00 for T3 to 1.70 for T2. The final average weight ranged between 10.6 g (T2) to 12.5 g (T3). The WSSV can affect negatively the growth rate (30%), the survival (64%), and the production (69%) in comparison with PCR-negative organisms. No differences in weight were found between WSSV-infected and non-infected individual shrimps, as well as in nested-PCR positive against single-step PCR positive organisms. It found that the zero water exchange strategy could be feasible for the culture of the white shrimp L. vannamei at a commercial level during the fallwinter season

Population of Lithothrix aspergillum J. E. Gray (Corallinales, Rhodophyta) was collected at several sites on the west coast of Baja California during 1996 to 2002 and a through revision was made of specimens deposited in herbaria in Mexico and California in order to determine the occurrence and latitudinal distribution of the reproductive phases of L. aspergillum on the Mexican Pacific coast. Analysis of the information reveled that tetrasporangial thalli are present along the all range of distribution know for L. aspergillum in the west coast of the Baja California peninsula; the bisporangial thalli are confined in the northwest part of the peninsula; meanwhile the scarce gametangial thalli (male and female) are commons in the south part of the peninsula. In general, bisporangial thalli are arborescent and large, with a mean size of 9.4 ± 1.4 cm; tetrasporangial thalli are more compact and branched, and lower in size than tetrasporangial thalli with a mean size of 4.4 ± 1.2 cm; meanwhile, gametangial thalli are characterized by the small size, with a mean size of 3.5 ± 0.8 cm. The morphology and reproductive characters of each reproductive phases are described.

Cadmium levels had increased in the Gulf of Mexico, this represents a potential risk for the survival of oyster Crassostrea virginica and for those who eat them, so it is important to evaluate the effects of cadmium trough histopathological changes derived from the exposition to this metal and during its depuration. Oysters exposed to 100 µg/l of cadmium for 72 h and depurated by 24, 48, 72, 96, 120, 144, 168, 192, 216, and 230 h were analyzed. Samples of oysters were included in paraffin, cutted in a microtome and stained following the Hematoxilin-Eosin technique. Histopathological analysis of oesophagus, intestine, digestive diverticulum, gills and mantle, showed inflammatory lesions and cell activation, including brown cells and haemocytes as a detoxification mechanism. The conjunctive tissue next to oesophagus, intestine and digestive diverticulum presented more brown cells and haemocytes than gills and mantle. Histopathological damage was not reversible in 230 h, although there was a recovery in epitheliums of digestive diverticulum. This work recommends the histopathological evaluation of digestive diverticulum to determine the physiological state of oysters and to take preventive measures in the commercialization and culture of their natural populations.

Juvenile and adult food habits of A. probatocephalus were analysed during one annual cycle, sampling bimonthly over 24 h cycles, in two habitat types (with and without submerged vegetation) in the Pueblo Viejo lagoon. The species showed an omnivorous diet, feeding mainly on invertebrates (mostly peracarids) and plants (?80%), with detritus (?20%) as a secondary choice. Juvenile (small individuals) tended to consume more small invertebrates (>57%), while adult individuals (larger ones) fed mainly on plants (>40%). Some of these changes were associated with an increase in the intestine relative length as fish grew up. In the seagrass habitat and during the dry season predominated juvenile individuals, which showed a larger invertebrate consumption (mainly copepods and peracarids), whereas in the habitat without vegetation and during the rainy season, adult individuals were more common, consuming mainly detritus and plant items. Although diet was similar between day and night, feeding intensity was greater during daylight hours (P=0.041), suggesting a diurnal predator condition in this species. In this way, the life history of the species at Pueblo Viejo lagoon shows adaptations towards maximizing the use of trophic resources, according to its seasonal and spatial availability.

Fluxes of nutrients and net metabolism were estimated in coastal lagoon Lobos, a semi-arid subtropical lagoon from Gulf of California, Mexico. Sampling runs were carried out during summer and winter, seawater samples for nutrients were collected in coastal lagoon, offshore and a channel waste-water, physico-chemical parameters were measured in situ. Fluxes of nutrients and net metabolism were estimated using LOICZ biogeochemical model. Flushing time was 5 days in summer and 12 days in winter. Lobos coastal lagoon was a sink of nitrogen in summer (?DIN = - 5645 mol day-1) and in winter (?DIN = - 136,575 mol day-1 ), and it was a source of phosphorus in summer (?DIP = + 360 mol day- 1 ) and sink in winter (?DIP = 15,809 mol day-1). During summer, Net Ecosystem Metabolism (NEM) of Lobos lagoon was heterotrophic (- 0.38 mmol m-2 d-1) and denitrification process was observed ( - 0.1 mmol m-2 d-1); during winter the NEM was autotrofic (+ 16.49 mmol m-2 d-1) and nitrogen fixation process was observed ( + 1.1 mmol m-2 d-1). These results suggest the hypothesis that coastal lagoons semi-arids subtropicals from Eastern coast on Gulf of Califonia have seasonal changes, dominant processes of denitrification and net metabolism hetrotrophic during summer, while dominant processes of nitrogen fixation and net metabolism autotrophic during winter.

Three different origin rainbow trout varieties were used to determine the variability of their carcass and meat quality; were used 80 Danish, 80 American and 80 Mexican, at different weight intervals; 175 224 g (I1), 225 274 g (I2), 275 324 g (I3) and 325 374 g (I4). Results indicated that Mexican trout had better carcass yields 88.35% at I3 and 87.34% at I4. For meat quality American trout at I2 had highest pH (7.14) and at I3 the highest luminosity value 47.53, the Danish at I2 had the highest water retention capacity 54.65%, this variety also has better protein content 21.58% at I4 and the lowest fat content (2.48%) at I2. Based in these results could be concluded that, Mexican trout due to their high carcass yield must be marketed at I3 or I4 weight ranges. That American trout could be used for filet marketing at I4 and that Danish trout had better qualifications in meat quality for processing.

It is described, illustrated and indicated the distribution of nine taxa of Ornithocercus; two of them being new records for the Mexican Pacific. The results of morphometric analyses over seven Ornithocercus species (O. bilobatus, O. magnificus, O. heteroporus, O. galea, O. quadratus, O. steini and. O. thumii) are presented. We evaluated 29 variables on 90 organisms of different species collected in the Mexican Tropical Pacific coasts. Due to the overlapping between O. steini-O. thumii, special analyses were done for this complex. Data were analyzed with multivariate statistical tools, Cluster Analysis (CA) and Discriminant Analysis (DA). CA resulted in two main and well differentiated groups, one of them with O. thumii, O. steini and O. quadratus (as differentiated subgroups), a second one with O. magnificus, O. heteroporus and O. galea. The DA showed significant differences up to fourth function (? Wilks<0.162, p<0.0005) with 97.7% of cases correctly classified and accumulated variance of 98.1%. The most important variables for segregation were the total length, the cingulum width and the rib R3. Significant differences were found among epitecal area and cingulum width. We concluded that O. galea is different enough from O. quadratus so they are not varieties of a single species. Despite of the overlapping between O. steini and O. thumii we found meristic characters to differentiate them.
