Caracterización parcial y actividad biológica de Sargassum lapazeanum (Fucales, Phaeophyceae): Biological activity of Sargassum lapazeanum
Background. The Baja California peninsula contains a wide variety of habitats and climatic conditions and is thus home to an enormous wealth of marine algae. Algae belonging to the Sargassum genus are often dominant in communities of the Gulf of California due to their high biomass. Goals. This study aimed to evaluate the potential of Sargassum lapazeanum as a source of compounds with antioxidant, antibacterial, or anticoagulant activity in addition to its proximal composition and alginate content. Methods. An ethanolic extract (EE) was obtained from dried algae to evaluate antibacterial activity by means of the disc agar diffusion method and antioxidant activity by the stable free radical method (DPPH). The crude fucoidan (CF) obtained was fractionated by different chromatographic techniques, and its anticoagulant activity was evaluated by prothrombin time (PT) and activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) assays. A structural characterization was also conducted. In addition, the proximal composition and alginate content and quality were determined. Results. The EE and its different fractions showed selective activity against bacteria of the Vibrio genus, such as V. harveyi and V. parahaemolyticus, in addition to free radical scavenging activity. The lowest half maximal effective concentration (EC50 = 39.96 μg mL-1) was obtained from fraction F6. Crude fucoidan and its fractions showed anticoagulant activity, with values comparable to those observed for heparin at concentrations of 10 μg mL-1. The sodium alginate yield was 22.8%, with low viscosity and high gel strength. Conclusions. Sargassum lapazeanum has high potential to be a source of compounds with antioxidant, antibacterial, and anticoagulant activity.Antecedentes.
Background. Since 1984, Ortega and several researchers have documented the presence of dinoflagellates in Mexico in reports and inventories to attain an overview of the biodiversity of this and other algal groups. However, their study is still incipient because of the fragility and small cell size of these organisms. Currently, there are more tools for their study, but precisely for this reason, detailed studies are just beginning. Goals. Compilation of an updated list of freshwater dinoflagellates of Mexico up to 2022. Methods. A bibliographic search was carried out by consulting reports and printed and electronic publications available at university documentation centers, as well as by reviewing the specialized databases AlgaeBase and bdLACET. Results. A total of 87 species and infraspecific taxa grouped into 25 genera,18 families and 9 orders have been recorded. The taxonomic classification was based on the system by Moestrup & Calado (2018). The names were updated according to AlgaebBase. Ceratium hiundinella, Gymnodinium palustre, Gymnodinium sp. and Peridinium sp. were the most frequently occurring species. The states of Michoacan, State of Mexico, Mexico City and Oaxaca were the most studied, and the most common environments were lakes, lagoons, and dams. Conclusions. Despite the expected notable increase in reported taxa from 2004 to date, this is likely not a complete list because Mexico presently lacks the personnel and budget for this work, for the expansion of geographic coverage and for the application of electron microscopy and molecular biology techniques necessary for more precise analyses.Antecedentes.
Background. Knowledge on the algal species richness in the state of Yucatán has varied considerably over time; from the works in 1935 by Taylor that recorded 27 species, to works in 2010 that included 285 spp. Goals. Update the diversity of macroalgae and cyanoprokaryotes, to integrate the Yucatan Phycological Flora in terms of species richness and distribution by general environments to detect the habitats that have been studied with different intensity. Methods. Macroalgae and Cianoprocariontes species records were selected from three sources: publications, herbarium collections, and projects, to generate the database with records at the species or infraspecific level, and data from which and how many habitats they have been found. Results. 462 species were registered: 194 Rhodophyta, 138 Chlorophyta, 54 Phaeopyceae and 76 Cyanoprokaryota, where 35 are new records not included in previous integrations. Records were considered according to their distribution in the following general environments: reef, coastal, or lagoon. The environment that recorded the highest species richness was the reef with 310 infrageneric taxa; although they mainly come from the Alacranes reef. Conclusions. There is a great difference in the number of species mentioned in different studies, this is the result of different methods, intensity, sampling time, sites, or habitats studied. The northern coast of Yucatan is very extensive, and we consider that, although there are many works on benthic macroalgae, some taxa and habitats have been little studied. Such is the case of Cyanoprokaryota and Phaeophyceae, and reef environments.Antecedentes.
Background. Studies on marine benthic dinoflagellates (MBD) began in 1942 from the offshore region of Oaxaca, based on water column samples. Subsequently, in ten Mexican maritime states, both epibenthos and plankton samples have been collected, species have been cultured, and field and laboratory studies have been carried out. Many of these species are related to ciguatera fish poisoning and diarrhetic shellfish poisoning. Goals. The objective of this contribution was to review the studies on MBD in Mexican waters. Methods. Available literature on MBD published from 1942 to 2022 was analyzed. Results. A review of the studies on MBD is presented, subdivided into two sections: (1) taxonomic diversity (morphological and molecular) and (2) toxigenicity and species interactions. A map of the studies on MBD, a list of taxonomic and ecological studies on MBD in Mexico and a list of ca. 60 species (mainly Prorocentrum, followed by Amphidinium, Gambierdiscus, Ostreopsis and Sinophysis) is presented, accompanied by scanning electron microscopic images of 15 species. Knowledge of the toxigenicity of MBD is still scarce. Experimental studies on MBD begun in this century have shown great potential; Prorocentrum lima has been the main object of these studies. Conclusions. Studies on MBD have slowly increased, probably due to the availability of a greater number of strains, as well as to international collaboration. Confirmed links between particular benthic harmful algal blooming species and events associated with the etiology of toxic syndromes are rare. However, the lack of reports does not indicate an absence of intoxications. Studies on toxicity, allelopathy, ecology, impact on cultivated organisms, biosynthesis of metabolites and biotechnological potential still need to be undertaken in Mexico.Antecedentes.
Research capability gaps hinder understanding of the impact of climate change on ecosystem services in the Latin American Pacific coast: Research capability and ecosystem services in Latin America
Background. Coastal communities are highly dependent on ecosystem services, but the benefits and livelihoods people derive from natural ecosystems are directly and indirectly affected by climate change. The need for a mechanistic understanding of how components of climate change translate into measurable impacts on ecosystems and society is fundamental to the ability to manage, plan and mitigate for the most likely environmental futures, yet progress in this area in tropical and subtropical countries is frustrated by a lack of research capacity at the local and regional level. Objectives. Here, we investigate the research capacity of the countries along the Pacific coast, between Mexico and Chile, a region with an extensive coastline (23,191 km) that spans 11 countries of varying socio-economic development status and anticipated to be especially vulnerable to climate change. Methods. Specifically, our focus was to explore how the effects of climate change on ecosystem services (provision, regulation and cultural) may relate to research capacity and gross domestic product (GDP) in each country along the Pacific coast of the Americas. Results. We find that, since 1980, the number of peer-reviewed scientific studies relevant to this topic strongly correlates with GDP (r = 0.90, p < 0.05) and that research effort is an order of magnitude lower along the Latin American Pacific coast (13.8 studies 1000 km-1) than in the neighbouring Californian coast (103 studies 1000 km-1). Conclusions. Our results highlight the need to better develop the research in the Latin America Pacific, and for more work on the key links between climate change and ecosystem services
Background. In the Gulf of Mexico, the Alvarado Lagoon System (ALS) stands out for its dimensions and fisheries. Rotifers are among the most abundant groups of zooplankton in these ecosystems. Information on its composition, diversity, and seasonal variation is scarce, despite its structural and functional importance. Objective. We determined the diversity, seasonal variation, and the influence of pH, transparency, salinity, and temperature in the rotifer community structure in the ALS. Method. We collected zooplankton samples and physicochemical parameters from September 2017 to May 2018 in four zones of the ALS along the salinity gradient. Zooplankton was separated into groups, and rotifers identified species level. Shannon-Weiner diversity index and effective diversity Hill numbers Q1 and Q2 were calculated by analyzing differences among seasons and zones. A cluster analysis was performed to determine the similarity in the biological composition between zones and seasons. Canonical correspondence analysis was performed with transformed data of physicochemical parameters and rotifer abundances. Results. Oligohaline behavior in the rainy season to mesohaline in the dry season and the influence of the rivers in all the ALS was observed. 24 rotifer species and four cladocerans were identified, all correspond to new records, being Brachionidae the most abundant. The highest diversity occurs during the rainy season in the south zone while the lowest in the dry season. Salinity and turbidity were related to the distribution of the Brachionidae species. Conclusions. Hydrological behavior and salinity variation gradient agree with records for ALS.Antecedentes.
Background. After its transfaunation from the Atlantic Ocean has been reported, the protozoan Perkinsus marinus has expanded its list of hosts in several species of mollusks in the Pacific Ocean, both in cultivation and in wild populations. Goals. The presence of this parasite was evaluated in the horsemussel Modiolus capax, in the southwestern Gulf of California. Methods. 60 mussels were collected per annual season for one year (summer, autumn, winter 2019-spring 2020, N = 240), in the mining port of Santa Rosalía (SR), Baja California Sur, Mexico. Thioglycollate staining was used to detect presumptive hypnospores and the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique for its confirmation. The prevalence, parasite load and intensity of infection were obtained in each sampling. Results. Presumptive hypnospores of the parasite were detected with thioglycollate staining in almost 20% of the samples analyzed, of which only 5% were positive for confirmation with PCR. Neither the prevalence (6.66-33.33%) nor the parasite load (˂ 2.75 hypnospores/g) showed a tendency to increase with time; the intensity of infection ranged from negative to light. Salinity showed correlation with parasite load (r = 0.99, p = 0.002). Conclusions. The results suggest that M. capax in SR presented low susceptibility to the parasite, so its health is not compromised when hosting P. marinus. Although it is the first report of the protozoan in this mussel, continuous monitoring is recommended to know not only the health status of the bivalve in the region, but also of the other species of mollusks that inhabit there.Antecedentes.
Background. The structure of benthic diatom assemblages (BDA) is related to the type of substrate where they flourish. Goals. assess the degree of variation shown by BDA growing on live and non-living substrata from a tropical coastal lagoon (Terminos lagoon). We tested the hypothesis that substrate influence would deem significantly distinct BDA. Methods. diatom samples were collected from live and non-living substrata from four sites within Terminos lagoon, México, where physicochemical variables were also measured. Diatom taxa were identified, and their relative abundances were estimated and used to compute community parameters (species diversity, equitability, dominance), along with the indicator value (IndVal). Also, similarity between the BDA from the four sites was measured and values were then compared using ANOSIM. Results. Although the IndVal showed a clear separation based on the dominant/constant taxa, ANOSIM indicated that differences between the sites were not significant. This may be related to the characteristic patchy distribution of BDA along environmental gradients. Conclusions. in coastal ecosystems the structure of BDA could be mainly influenced by environmental variables.Antecedentes.
