The Experience of Grace in The Phenomenon of Interreligious Dialogue

    No full text
This paper explores the experience of grace in the interreligious dialogue activists. The involvement of Catholic activists in this movement can be a locus for the experience of grace. Several theologians have recently discussed grace in a historical dimension. One of the theologians of the Second Vatican Council, Karl Rahner, had the idea of the experience of grace. Martin Heidegger\u27s phenomenological hermeneutic method explores the experience of the grace of Catholic activists. In-depth interviews were used as a data collection technique. The research subjects were two Catholics, the National Meeting of Indonesian Youth from the Youth Commission of the Indonesian Bishops\u27 Conference and one Catholic Young Interfaith Peacemaker Community. The results\u27 novelty shows that the research subjects did not recognize grace as an extraordinary phenomenon. Inspired by the Church\u27s teachings, they understand that grace is experienced as a process of living life\u27s roles, unique abilities, and gifts to become better. The study’s conclusion confirms that grace can be identified in everyday life and is not limited to a superstructure metaphysical idea

An Essay on Divine Eternity and Divine Presence

The belief that an eternal-atemporal God is present to temporal beings is at the heart of Christian doctrine. The problem with such belief is that there seems to be a metaphysical barrier between them. Therefore, the doctrine of divine timelessness is incompatible with divine presence. This essay will show that such a contention is false, given that His awareness of the temporal beings will be sufficient to account for His presence. Furthermore, this is also consistent with the view about the existence of deep interaction between God and human beings and of human free will. This philosophical analysis is pertinent to the proper understanding of the doctrine of divine eternity and divine presence. It also has a significant bearing on the provision for the basis of a meaningful conversation with other theological traditions, such as those living in Indonesia

Faith and Reason: An Inquiry into the Concept of Faith in Kierkegaard’s Fear and Trembling

Faith is often accused of being irrational and considered lower than reason because it is not objective and universal. In other words, at a practical level, believers cannot always obey God’s commands communicated in their inwardness. However, they must always be subject to the demands of a universal and objective reason. This elaboration attempts to counter this assumption departing from the description that Kierkegaard presented in his work, Fear and Trembling. There, Kierkegaard states that a single individual believer is higher than the ethical-rational demands that bind him. In other words, the purpose of this text is to show that faith has its rationality and is not subject to reason. Therefore, through the textual analysis method of Kierkegaard’s Fear and Trembling, this paper would like to analyze the constitutive elements of faith, how they work, and why faith is not subject to ratio. The point of view used in this elaboration is Kierkegaardian subjectivity. The analysis finds that the constitutive elements of faith are anxiety, courage, passion, the strength of the absurd, and hope (as components of faith), which need to be carried out with a double movement of faith

Faith In God as The Source of Goodness And Religious Moderation In Indonesia: A Christian Moral Perspective

Goodness is the basis and goal of all moral actions. Therefore, ethics, be it theological or philosophical, must in some way explain specifically what goodness is and where one can find it. The Christian faith answers this by stating its fundamental belief that God is good. It says that the Christian belief in goodness is based on faith in God, placing each Christian at the heart of the relationship between faith and moral action. After confirming this fundamental Christian belief that God is the centre of all values, in this paper, we will draw out some implications of the relationship between faith as a personal and communal experience of God and the development of an attitude of religious moderation in a pluralistic Indonesian society. Thus, cultivating an attitude of religious moderation does not stop as an external rule but should go further as an ethical imperative for every Christian

The periculum mortis and the juridical norms of the Catholic Church regarding the Sacraments: Canonical Perspective

In danger of death (periculum mortis), the canonical rules laid down under “normal conditions” concerning the reception and service of the Sacraments are often impossible to adhere to. One of the fundamental problems in pastoral life is a lack of juridical knowledge of the “graces, dispensations, exceptions” in canon law in situations of the danger of death, which can be detrimental to the spiritual rights of the faithful. It is, therefore, essential to examine both normatively and pastorally. Canon law seriously takes the danger of death as a matter of its positive norms. The “exegesis method” of canon law will be used in the canon on periculum mortis, especially book IV of CIC 1983. In conclusion, it is evident that in the face of the danger of death for every physical person in the Church, the principle: salus animarum suprema lex is the only norm that must be observed.

This article discusses how inter-religious studies is conducted in Indonesia. A case in point is Indonesian Consortium for Religious Studies (ICRS). As one of the founders, Duta Wacana Christian University (UKDW), has its own contributions for ICRS. The Faculty of Theology that plays the actual role as UKDW’s representation in ICRS has made ICRS a continuation of its existence as theological education. In this article, I will describe the link between theology and inter-religious studies as far as the Faculty of Theology UKDW is concerned. Rather than hindering the progress of inter-religious studies as some might worry, theology is in fact can be a significant part of inter-religious studies

Proposing Publicity Leaving Church Apolitical Piety

This article seeks to release the Church from the false dichotomy of piety vs activeness in political issues, so that church members can optimally actualize piety and public responsibilities simultaneously. Apolitical piety has been running in GKS since its establishment on January 15, 1947, as the Dutch Reformed Church\u27s evangelism legacy. Apolitical piety places the piety only as an individual\u27s internal affair, not covering the public sphere. This discourse is a direct influence of Pietism, which began to develop in Europe in the 16th century. And Pietism itself was present as a response to Secularism, which originated in European society since the end Middle Ages. Like Pietism, Secularism also places the Church/religion and mystical aspects as personal human affairs because it doesn\u27t want state life to be governed by or based on religion. But ideally, I view apolitical piety as the distorted discourse that should be abandoned and embrace new discourse: politics as an integral part of Church piety.

A Prophetic Pastoral of Presence: An “Exchange of Places.” Re-contextualizing the Encounter of Jesus and the Leper in Mark 1:40-45 for the Role of the Asian Church in the Midst of Pandemic Covid-19

The pandemic due to covid-19 makes the Asian Church stuttering in their services especially to the patients of covid-19.  In light of Mark 1:40-45, the author proposes to the Asian Church to do a prophetic pastoral presence, just say it an “exchange of places” as it is done by Jesus who takes the place of the leper as a risk of His action. To arrive at such conclusion, the author proceeds this study by analysing the text of Mark 1:40-45 from the narrative perspective and intertextual approach, then the reader is invited to review the consciousness of the FABC regarding its basis and praxis in Asia and how the Asian Church is trying to bring the face of God for the Asian people.

Being an Authentic Christian: an Analysis Based on The Philosophy of Søren Kierkegaard

Kierkegaard emphasis the importance of each individual being an authentic person. In his works, he gives an overview and direction to become an authentic person. Realizing whether someone authentically is not easy. Nowadays, I see many Christians who do not really live their lives as a Christian. The focus of this research is to present Kierkegaard\u27s view on the criteria of an authentic Christian. The method used is a critical reading analysis of Kierkegaard\u27s works (particularly Purity of Heart and The Sickness unto Death), previous research studies, observations, and interviews with several individuals. The author finds six criteria about authentic Christian individuals, namely: (1) Living in repentance, (2) Personal relationship with God, (3) Fear of God, (4) Willingness to suffer, (5) Being a loving person, and (6) Living in silence
