    Barriers to Seeking Preventative Care for Men Living in Rural North Dakota

    The purpose of this evidence-based practice improvement project (PIP) was to identify perceived barriers to seeking primary and preventative healthcare by males living in a rural North Dakota community. Research has shown that men in the United States live shorter lives and are more likely to die of many common causes of death than females. These facts may be partially explained by the idea that men are less likely than women to regularly see a healthcare provider. Health disparities also exist between rural and metropolitan communities as well. Individuals living in rural areas have been found to die more frequently of potentially preventable causes, have higher incidence of obesity, and shorter life expectancies than those living in metropolitan communities. The objectives of the PIP included: 1) Identifying actual and perceived barriers to seeking annual preventative care examination and screening by adult males, ages 19-65; 2) increasing healthcare professionals? knowledge of the barriers to seeking annual preventative care among adult males in the community; and 3) implementing at least two recommendations to improve healthcare utilization and reduce barriers within the rural clinic by the end of the project implementationMale volunteers were recruited to complete a survey identifying potential barriers to seeking preventative healthcare. The results were then communicated to healthcare providers practicing in the survey area along with evidence-based recommendations for breaking down identified barriers to increase utilization of services by males in their community. Twelve participants completed surveys. Barriers identified included poor health literacy/education, clinic hours conflicting with responsibilities, not wanting to discuss emotions and masculine ideas, and cost of healthcare. Recommended interventions included education at multiple levels, implementing male-focused health initiatives, and male-focused education/information in the clinic. After one month, the coinvestigator revisited the participating clinic. At that time, the clinic had opted to not implement the recommended interventions citing COVID-19 pandemic

Considering the German philosopher, Martin Heidegger?s, critique in his essay Building Dwelling Thinking, is it possible that our technology has advanced so far that we have forgotten what came before us, that which allowed us to dwell in a place in a meaningful way

    Urban Revitalization: Place-Making in Deteriorating Downtowns

    Downtown urban centers are the key to any functional city. They provide a canvas for communities to establish a cultural hub and sense of place. Over the last decade, communities across America have had trouble maintaining vibrant downtown environments due to changes in today?s social fabric. Pandemics, increased use of technology, and less dedication to small businesses have all lead to this issue. Thoughtful architecture and urban planning are important tools to solving the issue of deteriorating downtown areas. This thesis explores the avenues for why urban America has seen a drop in downtown growth and how to overcome such struggles by means of place-making, flexible architecture, and thoughtful urban planning.     Suburban Sequel: A Safer, Walkable Brooks Harbor Community

    Brooks Harbor in West Fargo, North Dakota is a new development that expanded rapidly with the addition of family housing. Due to its sprawl like development pattern, an analysis is done to determine the status of environmental, social, and economic sustainability of the neighborhood. From this analysis and through supporting research it will become known what aspects of sustainability this community excels and lacks in. The end goal will be designing infrastructure and infill improvements through a retrofit of the neighborhood to increase the long-term success of the neighborhood. The early stage of a new development is when the community atmosphere starts to form, and the culture becomes apparent to those who reside there. It is important to note any issues of sustainability as this time because it is then, not when a community?s culture is already established, to make changes to the environment people live in

    Emergency Response Architecture: Upgrading the National Guard Response Infrastructure

    Military conflict and natural disasters are sometimes unavoidable leading to human casualties and damage to building infrastructure. Military conflicts are human nature, they are a part of our history and will continue to happen in our future. Natural disasters destroy lives and homes across the world and have been increasingly more common due to climate change. We are often out of control when these tragedies strike leading us to panic in need of emergency response. Our emergency response is one of the only things we can control during military conflict and natural disasters. When we respond we attempt to save lives and preserve the damage done. Our response to these events should be fast, safe, and effective. We must be able to innovate using the best building technologies available to support our emergency response, because our response is what saves lives. The current architecture of our emergency responses is usually made up of tents, mobile trailers, and Conex box like shacks. These buildings get the job done and have proven to be successful. But a lot of the response infrastructure we use today was designed using building technologies from the 1950s or earlier. Of we want to have the fastest, safest, and most effective response, a look into new building technologies will help. What this thesis aims to answer is how we can innovate deployable units and incorporate new technologies for military and natural disaster response. The current response system isn't broken, but can be updated to new building technologies to ensure we have the fastest, safest, and most effective response to emergencies. By providing this we can ensure lives are saved from military conflict, natural disasters and whatever else threatens humanity

    A Trail Center Reimagined: An Intrinsic Relationship Between Architecture and the Natural Environment

    The exterior environment has been created by its own natural architecture- pulling, pushing, and shaping the earth?s surface to create ecosystems brimming with life. Historically, architects have used this natural landscape as a muse for design, creating structures that often overwhelm the inherent beauty of the site and lessen its cohesion to the natural environment. I believe modern-day conventional architecture struggles with its intrinsic connection to the natural landscape, a connection that in the past has inspired great works by poets, artists, and architects alike. The typology of the thesis project will be a newly designed and constructed trail center located in Duluth, MN. This building will provide a shared meeting point for outdoor enthusiasts who, as they interact directly with the structure?s interior and exterior touchpoints, become immersed seamlessly into the natural environment of the site. Through the comparison of similar project case studies, along with select subject-matter readings, this thesis seeks to discover, confirm, clarify and implement learnings from the natural world?s own design of shelter and place. And in doing so, answering the question - Can utilizing the natural landscape as a primary design influence enable a more connected, built architecture that is deeply intertwined with its surrounding environment

    Sport for Development and Peace (SDP) organizations utilize sport as a tool to address broad social issues, which has brought attention from diverse organizations including, but not limited to international/national governing bodies, sport federations, for-profits, and nonprofits for engaging in multi-organizational collaborations. However, the complex environmental factors and internal capacity challenges surrounding SDP organizations put additional pressure on leaders who are required to balance multiple organizational demands to achieve broad social change outcomes as well as the sustainability of the SDP collaborations. This presentation introduces how collaborative leadership approach characterized as shared leadership can help achieve the sustainability of SDP organizations by sharing recent research

    Creation and Implementation of the Innovation-Based Learning Framework: A Learning Analytics Approach

    To meet the national and international call for creative and innovative engineers, many engineering departments and classrooms are striving to create more authentic learning spaces where students are actively engaging with design and innovation activities. For example, one model for teaching innovation is Innovation-Based Learning (IBL) where students learn fundamental engineering concepts and apply them to an innovation project with the goal of producing value outsidethe classroom. The model has been fairly successful, but questions still remain about how to best support students and instructors in open-ended innovation spaces. To answer these questions, learning analytics and educational data mining (LA/EDM) techniques were used to better understand student innovation in IBL settings. LA/EDM is a growing field with the goal of collecting and interpreting large amounts of educational data to support student learning. In this work, five LA/EDM algorithms and tools were developed: 1) the IBL framework which groups student actions into illustrative categories specific to innovation environments, 2) a classifier model that automatically groups student text into the categories of the framework, 3) classifier models that leverage the IBL framework to predict student success, 4) clustering models that group students with similar behavior, and 5) epistemic network analysis models that summarize temporal student behavior. For each of the five algorithms/tools, the design, development, assessment, and resulting implications are presented. Together, the results paint a picture of the affordances and challenges of teaching and learning innovation. The main insights gained are how language and temporal behavior provide meaningful information about students? learning and innovation processes, the unique challenges that result from incorporating open-ended innovation into the classroom, and the impact of using LA/EDM tools to overcome these challenges
