Decoding tofu quality: an integrative investigation of soybean seed characteristics and innovative evaluation approaches

This research unravels the intricate relationship between soybean seed characteristics, geographical origin, and the resultant quality parameters of tofu. The study analyzed 178 soybean varieties from diverse regions, categorizing them into distinct clusters based on protein, moisture, and other attributes. Significant variations emerged, with soybeans from the United States exhibiting higher protein, while Chinese sources displayed higher moisture content. Subsequently, the research delved into diverse tofu quality parameters using multivariate analysis. Distinct clusters were identified based on attributes including yield, texture, moisture content, and brix levels. These parameters exhibited complex interrelationships, providing insights into factors defining tofu sensory qualities. Furthermore, an innovative integration of Hyperspectral Imaging and machine learning accurately predicted tofu quality categories from soybean seeds with 96-99% precision, revolutionizing conventional assessment methods. The research underscores the multifaceted nature of factors influencing tofu quality, considering seed origin and composition. It highlights the need to tailor soybean sourcing and processing practices to achieve desired textural and sensory attributes aligned with consumer preferences. The pioneering use of advanced technologies sets the foundation for enhanced quality evaluation, improved production practices, and product innovations in the tofu industry

Adaptive Reuse: Repurposing a Vacant College Campus for New Occupancy

Adaptive reuse has been a design strategy in buildings existing for centuries. The adaptation of a building, also known as recycling or conversion, is the process of reusing an existing building other than what it was originally built or designed for. This element of design has enabled generations to derive a sense of continuity and stability from their physical surroundings. This paper examines the context of adaptive reuse through extensive research: its history and evolution, the importance of cultural memory and historical preservation, the question of value in design, sustainability, and the overarching idea of designing through time. The information gathered regarding reuse in buildings aims at developing a strategy that has commonly progressed over the last few years since the COVID-19 pandemic: college campuses closing down and leaving a vacant campus filled with unused buildings in its stead. Since 2016, over 91 colleges have closed, merged with other schools, or announced plans of a closure or merger. This number roughly reflects the response to the pandemic, with students moving from in person to online and colleges not generating enough revenue to stay open. Before the pandemic, though, closures and mergers began rising due to smaller numbers of enrollment and in turn a lack of funding. One college in particular, a private, non-profit institution called Presentation College in Aberdeen, SD, is examined in this paper. Research of adaptive and vacancies incorporating academic books, articles, and studies are examined in order to find a solution for this now vacant campus. The Buildings Construction Report of 2022, the Aberdeen Comprehensive Plan, and conducted interviews aim at discerning how adaptive reuse can be beneficial for a vacant campus to help solve a question for college campuses around the country: What can be done with this green space and large stock of unused buildings

Rethinking the American Dream for the 21st Century

This research aims to redefine the ?New American Dream? for the 21st century. In a new era where single-family homes no longer align with the preferences of this generation along with a large demographic shift to more dense urban living, it is time to rethink the role of the suburbs. Through investigation of California?s housing trends, migratory shifts, and the opportunity for medium-density housing, this study will explore strategies to make suburban housing more affordable and aligned with current societal needs. As a final result, the suburbs will evolve to play a new role in equitable housing and resource availability in the hope of solving California?s housing affordability crisis

Living Library: How Stories Told Through Architecture Can Strengthen Communities and the People Within Them

Story has been passed down through generations, carrying with it the history and teachings of diverse groups of people. Storytelling has evolved to fit into an ever-changing society, trying to adapt and stay prevalent in it. With the ever-widening distance between strangers today, many stories and storytelling opportunities are being lost. Architecture is no longer being used as a tool to tell stories and provide places for stories to be told. The connections and spaces that once brought people from all walks of life together do not exist as they once did. The living library is an intervention, providing a place to rekindle and foster the connections missing today. By providing a place where stories can be told and shared with others, communities can begin to create stronger connections. The living library provides spaces for stories to be told, kept, found, and made

Reimagining the Police Station: Fostering Community Connection Through Architectural Design

American community between the police and minority communities, particularly the African-American community, is a significant challenge in American society. This thesis advocates for design to support community policing efforts and rebuild trust between law enforcement and the public. Through research, design strategies such as embracing mixed-use typologies, repurposing civic assets, integrating mass timber construction, and fostering healthy interactions within built environments have been identified. These interventions aim to create spaces where community members can engage with law enforcement in environments conducive to building trust. Moving forward, further exploration and refinement in police station architecture are essential. While architectural solutions alone cannot resolve complex issues, architects have a crucial role in envisioning and implementing spaces that foster positive social change and restore trust between law enforcement and the communities they serve

Designing for Shared Spaces: An Approach to Enhancing Animal Welfare and Foster Human-Animal Connections Through Compassionate Design

The provided research conveys the problems being faced in animal shelters that were influenced by COVID-19 and how it impacted the overcrowding rates driven by the rise in pet relinquishment numbers and lack of social response by humans. Due to the lack of proper awareness and standards for shelters, animal welfare is not being observed, causing placement in inhumane environments, triggering severe stress, and causing mental/physical deterioration. Animal welfare is suffering because of the lack of human response for animal life. These situations that are impacting animal well-being have greatly increased because people are less willing to connect to animals and shelters. The building proposal being presented is for a properly configured animal shelter that is designed to promote healthy and stimulating living spaces for cats and dogs, offers proper spaces for shelter employees to perform daily operations, and spaces designated for human-animal interaction that provide benefits to the welfare of both groups

Psychosomatic Transformation: The Cathartic Cycle of Time and Healing

Concerning healthcare today, it is clear to see that there is a disconnect between our understanding of physical health and of mental health. Not having access or not being able to afford any type of medical treatment is a problem this country needs to solve. While not having the power to write prescriptions or diagnose illnesses, architecture has the power to affect us on a more holistic level. Architecture?s influence on our mood from the manipulation of a space?s atmosphere is essential to the connection between the metaphysical mind and physical body. Our bodies respond to these emotions made through experiencing architecture, creating reactions powerful enough to encourage deeper thought and reflection. The cathartic connection between the mind and body is the solution we need in this country?s healthcare crisis. I offer architecture as that solution, creating spaces meant to transform and heal the occupants throughout various cycles throughout the spaces mimicking that of the cycles of day and night, our circadian rhythms, or the seasons. Throughout the design of these spaces, my goal is to create such powerful emotions and reactions to this space and experience in order to heal the inhabitants from the inside out

Designing a Holistic Environment for Athletic Performance: Athletics Canada High Performance Training Center

Sports are highly profitable, but when looking at the design of sports buildings, the spectators and owners are the primary user groups, pushing athletes to the side and compromising where they train. As athletic talent continues to better with each generation, the environment in which the athlete trains must be considered as a factor in performance. By shifting the focus of design back onto the athletes, a prosperous environment can be created that improves their wellness and performance. By examining sports performance, how design affects the experience of users and surveying athletes, information can be derived that creates a protocol for athletic training facilities. Using this protocol when designing sports architecture prioritizes the athlete, creating a holistic environment for athletic performance

A Riverfront Revival: Transforming St. Paul's Downtown in Synergy with the Mississippi River

St. Paul is the capital city of Minnesota and a very historical area. It is one of the biggest cities in the state and has started the birth of other cities in the metropolitan area. It has been a leader to other cities and is a very important location, but St. Paul still has many issues. The downtown area of the city is located next to the Mississippi River, but the connection is not as strong as it should be. With this, the skyline of the city is not very impressive and could do with some upgrades. While working with the aesthetic of the city, safety should also be increased as St. Paul is currently dealing with a fair amount of crime
