An Analysis of Kinesio? Tape on Mitigation of Dynamic Knee Valgum
Kinesio? Tape has potential to be an intervention to mitigate dynamic knee valgum. This research project investigated the effect of Kinesio? Tape has on dynamic knee valgum through three-dimensional (3D) motion analysis in females with a history or current participation in competitive basketball or volleyball. Thirty volunteers preformed a Y-Balance test and drop jump landing (DJL) test with three different taping conditions. No tape, Kinesio? Performance Plus Tape for the facilitative gluteus medius application, and Kinesio? Tex Classic Tape for the spiral technique (ST). Results observed a statistically significant decrease in knee abduction valgum angle during 100 ms after initial contact on a DJL with application of the Kinesio? spiral technique. No significant results were observed between all three conditions during Y-Balance testing. Based off these findings we can conclude that applying the Kinesio? spiral technique mitigates dynamic knee valgum, therefore possibly decreasing the risk for ACL injury in females
Proposed Nonparametric Tests for the Umbrella Alternative in a Mixed Design Testing for Location and Location-Scale
Researchers sometimes use the umbrella alternative when testing for differences in treatment effects, where the parameters increase up to a point and decrease after that point. Sometimes different treatment effects may result in changes to location parameters only, to scale parameters only, or to both. In this study, we considered tests for three distinct scenarios; the tests in each scenario were compared based on estimated power for the different underlying distributions and on different known umbrella peaks that were based on 3, 4, or 5 populations. For all three scenarios, recommendations for which test was better will be given in a variety of cases.
In scenario one, this research investigates existing test statistics proposed by Magel et al. (2010) for detecting umbrella alternatives when the peak is known, and the underlying design consists of a completely randomized design (CRD) and randomized complete block design (RCBD). We investigate the powers of the tests compared to each other when testing for location in this design when the variance of the CRD portion is 2, 4, and 9 times larger than the variance of the RCBD portion. Three underlying distributions, a variety of location shifts, and different ratios between the sample size in the CRD portion compared to the number of blocks in the RCBD portion are considered.
In the second scenario, three nonparametric tests are proposed for a CRD design with k populations to test for the umbrella alternative with known peak, p, for both location and scale parameters. A simulation study was implemented to see if the proposed tests maintained their significance levels. Also, the tests proposed were compared based on estimated powers for sample sizes of 15 and a variety of location and scale shifts.
In the third scenario, we proposed nonparametric test statistics to test for an umbrella pattern testing for location and scale for a mixed design. Powers were estimated for different ratios of sample size in the CRD to the number of blocks in the RCBD and equal variance ratios between a CRD and a RCBD, as well as changes in the location and scale parameters
Effectiveness of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Ventilation Devices With Protective Hockey Equipment as Performed by Certified Athletic Trainers
Certified Athletic Trainers (ATCs) are expected to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on athletes experiencing cardiac arrest regardless of the protective equipment worn by the athlete. Additionally, ventilation devices used by ATCs aid in the delivery of ventilations during CPR. The goal of this research was to determine which ventilation device allowed ATCs to deliver adequate ventilations and to establish recommendations for helmet removal method in hockey players requiring CPR. Twenty ATCs completed four scenarios of CPR according to the 2020 AHA guidelines using a PocketMask (PM) or FaceShield (FS) to deliver ventilations and accessing the airway by removing only the facemask or the entire helmet. Overall, the PM resulted in higher quality ventilations compared to the FS and complete removal of the helmet was superior compared to removing the only facemask. For hockey athletes requiring CPR, ATCs should remove the helmet completely and use a PM for ventilation delivery

Sustainable architecture is growing in popularity and necessity all around the world. More and more people and governments are recognizing the need for sustainability to improve the health of the planet and the people that call it home. The problem is usually these projects are disconnected and just focus on one element, being green. This thesis focuses on how net-zero architecture, connections to nature and all-around interconnectivity can improve the health, wellbeing, and happiness of an entire community. Through a major mixed-use development on the bank of the St. Croix River, and exploration of how different architectural elements can have differing impacts on people, we can improve everybody?s wellbeing and thus build our communities for the long term in an ever growing and changing world
Manufactured Quality of Life: Planning for Equity, Environment and Community in a Rural Mobile Home Park
Over 20 million Americans reside in a mobile home park. The homes are hardly mobile and calling them a park is an exaggerated compliment. The automobile industry birthed the trailer that is now used as a permanent home. After the industrial revolution and World War II, reaching suburbia quickly became an American dream. Manufacturers took advantage of this movement by rapidly producing homes that have resulted in the permanent communities of today. Banks view mobile homes as personal property, which depreciates at the same rate as an automobile. Since a mobile home is not valued as real property, it makes it more challenging to obtain financial equity. These neighborhoods lack in programming and maintenance, keeping this lower income population within the cycle of poverty. However, mobile homes still provide housing to over 20 million Americans which is why certain aspects of this built environment need to be preserved. This type of housing mends the gap between needing government assisted housing and financially obtaining real property in the form of a home. This thesis will show how we can measure the quality of mobile home communities to promote sustainable and equitable justice
Living Lightly on Earth: The Urban Eco Village
Imaging living a low-impact lifestyle surrounded by nature,
food, freshwater and air, wildlife, and a community with a
common desire. An eco village is a community with shared
land that promotes positive values including ecology,
solidarity, quality, tolerance, generosity, diversity, hospitality,
respect, and collaboration all while being self-sufficient.
These communities are more commonly found in rural and
off-grid locations and have numerous benefits that should be
shared on a larger scale.
Although living off grid is a desirable lifestyle for some, a
large amount of the population strive to live in urban settings.
With sustainable living becoming a growing desire, a redesign
of an urban eco village would not only satisfy multiple
needs of the common individual, but will create numerous
environmental benefits as well. The vertical densification of
sustainable living and nature will combine the benefits of the
common Eco Village with the benefits of an urban typology
to attract and encourage a sustainable lifestyle and personal
growth
A Review of Biomechanics of Arterial Stent Implants
This work looks to provide a review of modern stents by evaluating the need for them as well as providing a detailed engineering analysis of the conditions they are subjected to. It is estimated that over two million of these devices are implanted in patients annually. Of those implanted, a majority are used in the treatment of arteriosclerosis. This disease causes arterial walls to thicken and toughen leading to restricted blood flow and in extreme cases, complete loss of circulation. Arteriosclerosis and complications arising from it form a leading cause of death in the developed world. Although there are a variety of treatment options available, stents have been successfully used for several decades. The review of numerous technical reports infers that stents must withstand complex multi-axial loading conditions while being able to withstand an immense number of loading cycles, making the design and implementation of stents a significant feat

The Not-So-Universal Experience: A Content Analysis of Regional and National Secondary and Postsecondary Standards for Writing
In this paper, I analyze six sets of high school and college standards and outcome statements on students writing to identify how expectations of students writing vary in their respective educational levels. I include local samples from North Dakota and Minnesota as well as examples at the national level. Utilizing content analysis, I identify frequently used terminology in these statements to uncover trends in how college-level writing is envisioned through the standards and outcomes. Through this analysis, I explore how the terminology used in standards and outcomes frame writing and how these pictures of writing from the high school perspective and the college perspective are connected and disconnected. My findings note that while there is shared base terminology around writing (particularly ?audience? and ?purpose?), the high school standards lean more heavily on product-focused terms while the college outcomes emphasis process
Colorectal Cancer: Increasing Awareness of Screening in a Rural North Dakota Community
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States, yet only 67% of the eligible population have received screening. Preventative CRC screenings help to reduce mortality and allow CRC to be found at the pre-cancerous or early stages, when the disease is highly curable. The purpose of this clinical dissertation project was to determine whether providing an educational booth with informational handouts and informational PowerPoint set on loop for adults ages 18-75 in the rural community of Grafton, ND increased knowledge and intent regarding CRC screening, as well as assisted to better understand barriers to receiving CRC screening.
An educational booth with handouts and informational PowerPoint was presented to 28 voluntary participants, ages 18-75. Participants were from a convenience sample of eligible adults already attending a community event in a small-town setting in the rural community of Grafton, North Dakota. Post-survey results after the educational session were evaluated with descriptive statistics.
Sixty-four percent of participants (N=28; n=18) indicated increased knowledge on CRC and/or screening modalities. Eighteen participants determined that the educational intervention positively influenced their intent to be screened. Of the ten participants who indicated ?no?, the educational intervention did not influence their intent to be screened, eight indicated they had already decided to be screened prior to the intervention. Fifty-three percent of participants (n=15) identified barriers of some form in receiving CRC screening and of these 15 participants, 13 indicated that due to the educational session, they were still likely to begin or continue CRC screening.
The co-investigator through the project implementation helped increase awareness of CRC and screening modalities, as well as positively impacted intent to receive CRC screening in Grafton, ND. This project helped illuminate barriers to receive screening, as well as positively influenced participants to choose to be screened despite identified barriers. Future projects should continue to focus on education to provide knowledge and address barriers. Nurse practitioners (NPs) are well suited to meet the needs of CRC education, identifying and alleviating barriers, as well as encouraging patients to receive CRC, all of which can reduce CRC morbidity and mortality
