    Chronically Sustainable: Creating a Sustainable Community for the Chronically Ill

    In a world that is rapidly changing due to climate change, there is a group of people that are being left behind in the ?green? movement. This is not new for these people; the group has often been forgotten and under served by society throughout history. This group is the chronically ill. With a variety of abilities and needs, society has failed to give them the same opportunities in life as the abled body. Buildings are required to have accessible entrances but often time they are far from the main entrances and highlight a person?s disabilities by inconveniencing not just only the disabled but everyone in their group. Yet, there is even more to accessibility than ADA entrances. Accessibility has many factors such as affordability, access to resources, and usability. This project focuses on how to create a community that is designed for the chronically ill with their various needs and abilities at the forefront of the design while considering the sustainability of the project. Located outside of Phoenix, Arizona within the Sonoran Desert, this project focuses on the ability to create a sustainable community that caters to a demographic that has struggled to become more sustainable due to their additional medical needs. The community will provide for the chronically ill and their families within the master planned community. Amenities include a community center, retail, grocery store, medical facility, athletic facilities, and leisure facilities. The project is divided into two parts: master planning the community and designing key community aspects

    Understanding the Role of Soils in Decision Making: Urban Agriculture and Septic Systems

    Rural and urban dwellers frequently face decisions relating to human health. Among these are issues pertaining to water quality, and the availability of safe and nutritious food. Rural septic systems treat household wastewater which could contaminate surface and near surface waters if left untreated. In urban areas and food deserts the quality of the locally sourced food may be of concern. Many of these issues can be resolved with access to current soils information and interpretations, and an understanding of how the soil functions in the user?s area of interest. From planting a community garden to replacing a failing septic system, decisions can be made with the help of experts in their respective fields. Agencies like the Natural Resources Conservation Service, Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, and local professionals can assist stakeholders in making the best-informed decisions when it comes to mitigating potentially harmful water and producing safe food

    Health Effects on the Me Too Movement by Gender

    In October 2017, those who had experienced sexual harassment and assault commanded attention by posting their experiences with the hashtag ?#metoo.? This movement built off Tarana Burke?s advocacy efforts beginning in 2007, and these posts were soon ubiquitous, with survivors sharing very personal and painful experiences. The ubiquity of these posts could have various impacts on those who read them, from empowerment to pain. In a recent study, we examine the health impacts of encountering the #metoo movement, particularly examining how outcomes vary based on an individual?s experience with sexual harassment. We find differences by the gender of respondent in both negative and positive health outcomes, depending on the respondent?s experience with sexual harassment. Public health strategies for preventing sexual harassment are discussed

    Pursuit and Achievement of Emergency Management Program Accreditation

    While accreditation of emergency management programs has been available for more than two decades, very few emergency management programs are accredited, particularly at the local level. This study examined what may facilitate or hinder the pursuit and achievement of Emergency Management Accreditation Program (EMAP) accreditation by emergency management program leaders (EMs) in programs located in a United States city with a population over 300,000 (n=69). The multidisciplinary accreditation body of literature has not matured to the point of offering a theoretical or statistical model which could guide quantitative work on the topic. Additionally, accreditation is understudied in the context of emergency management. A qualitative approach to the research was most appropriate for these reasons. In-depth interviews with thirty EMs were conducted using the Responsive Interviewing Model (Rubin & Rubin, 2012) to gather rich data related to the research questions and analyze it. The study results in a series of key findings and recommendations related to practice and research. Findings related emergency management, suggest: a) perceptions of EMs are the most important facilitator or barrier of formal pursuit of accreditation, b) emulating The Emergency Management Standard (2019) is critical to understanding the commencement of formal pursuit, c) local emergency management compliance with structuring mechanisms does not result in compliance with The Standard, and the relationship between them is not explicit or otherwise apparent, and d) while most EMs interviewed as part of this study knew of The Standard and EMAP, and valued it, awareness could be improved. Related to the accreditation body of knowledge, the results suggest: a) program leaders may have more influence than the body of accreditation work might lead one to believe, particularly in the absence of extrinsic forces, b) some facilitators and barriers to accreditation may be heavily influenced by more than one category, c) a period of emulation was required and pursuit was delayed until the program leader believed accreditation would be achieved once the formal process got underway, and d) the period leading to formal instigation was that the most important to both pursuit and achievement

    Genetic Analysis, Association Mapping and Genomic Prediction for Different Traits in a Diverse Flax Germplasm Collection

    The sustainability and success of any breeding program depends on the extent of the genetic base of germplasm collection and adaptation of modern breeding tools. With the passage of time, genetic diversity in parental collection erodes and new technology evolves. To strengthen the North Dakota State University (NDSU) flax-breeding program, this research was conducted to explore the molecular marker-based genetic diversity, marker-trait associations, and optimization of genomic prediction models for different traits in a set of 350 flax (Linum usitatissimum L.) germplasms using 26171 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers. We also investigated the inheritance pattern of qualitative traits considering diverse parents and wild relatives. The admixture model-based structure analysis, neighbor-joining (NJ) tree and principal coordinate analysis separated the whole collection into seven sub-populations (P1 to P7). The pairwise Fst comparison revealed a great degree of divergence (Fst > 0.25) between most of the sub-populations, where it was highest for NDSU/American genotypes with Turkish and Asian genotypes. Inheritance study revealed that four independent genes control seed color, and two genes for flower color and anther color. 100-seed weight showed continuous variation in segregating population. Flower and anther color were tightly linked to seed color and inclusion of wild relatives in crossing resulted in maximum phenotypic variation in segregating populations. We found a total 286 significant quantitative trait nucleotides (QTNs) and variable number of putative candidate genes around the identified QTNs for seed yield and nine yield-related traits. Fourteen genomic prediction models and several factors affecting predictive ability were evaluated using cross-validation schemes. Predictive ability yielded by different models was almost similar, which ranged from 0.11 to 0.56, with no model working best across all traits considering the whole marker set. Marker thinning based on linkage disequilibrium (LD) decay distance did not affect the predictive ability, but for random selection, it reached a plateau above around 3000 markers. In diverse collections, though correction for population structure did not improve predictive ability, but stratified sampling gave more predictive ability values than that by whole collection across traits. The overall results will help the breeder to design efficient breeding schemes to develop improved cultivars

    Non-Chemical Weed Management in Annual and Perennial Organic Cropping Systems

    Weedy pests, especially perennial weeds, are among the most challenging barriers to organic crop production. Improving non-chemical weed management tactics for established organic productions systems, like cool-season grains, and emerging crops like perennial flax could benefit producers. We compared three crop sequences for creeping perennial weed suppression in organic grains. Three years of alfalfa was associated with reduced densities and aboveground biomass of perennial weeds compared to sequences that alternated grain and cover crops. Interseeding cover crops with perennial flax for weed management was attempted, but neither flax nor cover established well. Flame weeding and cultivation in perennial flax were assessed in response to the failure of these cover crops. Greenhouse trial results suggested flaming could eliminate weeds without damaging shallowly planted flax seed, but emerged flax seedlings suffered greater mortality. Massive perennial flax mortality in subsequent field trials suggested flaming is a risky weed management tactic for the crop

    Incorporation of Access and Functional Needs in Local Response Plans: Are We There Yet?

    This study aimed to evaluate the extent to which access and functional needs (AFN) and other older terminology for this issue area are addressed in county-level response plans. The evaluation tool was adjusted from one introduced by Berke et al., 2010 to be more representative of response plans and AFN language. Plans from the largest counties in the states with the most Presidential Disaster Declarations were evaluated. The evaluation found that states with laws specific to the issue area were more likely to have plans addressing them. Overall, the quality of the plans was poor, and they failed to address AFN or other aspects of the issue area robustly. Guidance and training for AFN should develop to address these shortcomings

    Genome Wide Association Study of Basic Fruit Chemistry in the Cold Climate Wine Grapes (Vitis spp.)

    To overcome some of these challenges posed by ND climate, the utilization of native wild Vitis-derived varieties is the best possible option available. Despite advantageous environmental tolerances of native wild Vitis spp. derived crosses, their acid and sugar concentrations often deviate from expectations set for V. vinifera. Identifying the genetic determinants of titratable acidity (TA), pH, and total soluble solids (TSS/?Brix) in interspecific hybrid populations can help improve new hybrid cultivars. For this purpose, an incomplete diallel mapping population with substantial riparia and other wild Vitis spp. in its background was used to perform association studies. The population is genotyped with single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers and phenotyped over two years. Genome wide association analysis (GWAS) identified a significant association on chromosomes 6 and 16 for all three traits in both years. Candidate gene identification under the significant region revealed multiple glucose, fructose, and amino acid metabolism genes
