EVCD, Targeting Beta Sheet Richness of Tumor Derived Extracellular Vesicles for Pancreatic Cancer Screening
Get PDFPancreatic cancer is a deadly disease and a relatively uncommon form of cancer. However, it is projected to be the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the US by 2040. The 5-year survival rate of pancreatic cancer patients is 10 percent. Currently, there are no effective screening methods available. Extracellular vesicles are nanoparticles secreted by all cells and play versatile roles in human health. EVs can be used as a non-invasive biomarker for pancreatic cancer screening since they can be isolated from bodily fluids. Currently, single molecule biomarkers have been proposed for pancreatic cancer screening. They lack sensitivity and specificity. We studied the ?collective attribute? of protein secondary structures of EVs from two cancer (MiaPaCa2 and PANC-1) and one healthy cell line (HPNE). Protein secondary structures of EVs were studied using circular dichroism spectroscopy. We found that cancerous EVs contain more beta sheet rich proteins than non-cancerous EVs

Pretrial Services: Exploring What Works and Policy Implications
Get PDFAs the view on mass incarceration around the United States is further explored, there has been a need for alternatives to jail. Specifically, pretrial services programs are an opportunity for recently charged defendants to be released from jail while being supervised in the community. Pretrial services programs find eligible defendants in local jails and collect information regarding the case to determine an appropriate release plan. Once the individual is released from jail, their risk assessment score is utilized to create a supervision plan along with the conditions imposed by the court during the bail hearing. This policy paper discusses previous literature regarding the effectiveness of pretrial services programs. Multiple policy recommendations are suggested, including assessing clients? risks and needs as well as utilizing assessment tools to determine supervision. Finally, a proposed program evaluation design is presented

Minnesota. These mines will eventually become abandoned, as many in the eastern United States, as well as many
along the Mesabi Iron Range already have. Abandoned surface mines can be hazardous if they are allowed to
erode, settle, or even collapse. As the United States becomes increasingly environmentally aware, this research
may act as a partial solution to deforestation that occurs to expand our communities near these mines. The mines
have already taken out forests, so why not build within them rather than expand further into our wilderness? This
thesis will attempt to create a framework to reclaim these mines as symbiotic partner communities to the cities
nearby rather than allowing them to sit vacant and deteriorate

Looking to the outskirts of the metro area there are many rural communities that do not see the same benefit. This thesis will focus on a Regional Riverfront Park that will seek to develop a resilient system that increases community resiliency by combating the disruptions of flooding events of the river systems of the Red River. The 40-acre Riverfront Park is located by Mason ST by the Buffalo River and Red River. This will allow for the exploration of ideas that could be used as a precedent for other rural communities in the form of regional riverfront park. The project seeks to Enhance the Riverfront through resilient components that aid in bringing connectivity and support to the built, social, and natural systems. The components of resiliency; diversity, redundancy, network connectivity, modularity, and adaptability will be utilized as a framework to establish community resiliency by connecting the community and environment to the river
